Protein shakes are the Emperors new clothes.

The body can only absorb so many grams of protein per day, and any excess just gets pissed away, literally, so all these protein shakes & supplements are a waste of money & a placebo at best.

Protein hype: shoppers flushing money down the toilet, say experts

I guess it depends on if you're getting enough protein initially though. Like those vitamin supplements - apart from vit A your body will be get rid of everything it cant absorb. Hence why your piss is luminous after a berocca.

I've got some as I'll admit sometimes my diet is lacking. But some of the vitamins in the tablet are like 500% RDA so I quarter them and drink it over a number of hours to give my body a better chance to absorb it.

Haven’t read all 7 pages here so not sure if it’s been discussed or mentioned already but Huel is fantastic. Nutritionally complete meal replacement “shake”...in quotes because it’s really just milled food.

Wouldn’t recommend doing this long term (for the mental impact) but I did a whole week on nothing but Huel and felt great. It’s not a magic weight loss solution or anything but it was just a way that I could perfectly measure my calorie intake and not be tempted to have “a little bit more” when giving myself servings and a way to not be tempted by anything else. At the end of the day it really is calories in versus calories out for weight loss. Doing the whole week on it helped get me out of my sugar addiction! Sugar really is just addictive...like cigarettes if you go without for a couple of weeks you don’t even crave shit anymore (obviously you still will be eating sugar but you know what I mean).

Nowadays I have one for breakfast cause I can’t be arsed to cook and hate feeling bloated in the morning.

Also really helps to get into some kind of cardio and once you get pretty good at it or competitive with someone, you don’t put it off and hate it. There’s nothing worse than feeling like you’re starving yourself, but if you are taking more calories out on one side of the equation as well as monitoring your intake, you can treat yourself to a little bit more food in your stomach and still run at a pretty solid calorie deficit...without mentally feeling like it!

This is it- when you aren’t getting enough natural protein it’s essential to top it up- I don’t eat meat so I need to get it somewhere. I have an array of various vitamin tablets & things too but god only knows if they’re doing any good.

I love hot food & you have to make meals interesting when you’re watching calories, so each evening I’ll have a big trough of peppers, onions, ginger (one of the healthiest foods there is), garlic, leeks & some kind of protein, with hot chilli flakes (incredibly nutritious) and some kind of hot seasoning- tastes great but I’m finding that after going to the garage for a workout my clothes & the garage absolutely reek of garlic & spices :)

The local gym opened up tonight & I was back in- had a great moment when I was immediately able to lift way more than I was before lockdown, one of those little landmarks that tells you “all the pain and shit paid off”

that stuff sounds good and would be great to have something fast- it can take ages to rustle something up when you’re starving & have to stand chopping up vegetables & things.

Have sourced out some interesting long walks around Leam to try when we get a moment. 8 years ago I walked 500 but I get knackered walking 5 these days!

I used Huel for a month about 4 or 5 years ago I think it was. And as you say I felt great using it. But after while I got sick of the taste, then dropped it down to just breakfast then gave up.
Didn't use it for any weight loss reason I just wanted to try it. Impeccable turds.

+1 on impeccable turds.

Re the taste I know what you mean. For me it’s not bad when I have it but I’m just not excited for it. The thing is though once you have a serving (the “black” addition now is 2 scoops for 400kcal and 40g of protein) your hunger craving is instantly satisfied. It’s just getting yourself to drink it. For me the trick to that is to have one before you are really hungry. Like don’t let yourself get ravenous because then it’s a mental battle you’re not going to win. If I do let myself get too hungry I tell myself to have a Huel, and then wait ten minutes and I’ve I’m still hungry I can have what I want. I never am.

Yeh exactly mate. Everyone is busy and even with the best intentions sometimes it’s just not possible to meal prep every day. And when you’re on the go or you get delayed in the morning you’re way more likely to eat shit if you have nothing with you. Huel is a great option!

Cycling going well. Not focusing on anything else. Still bloody hard cycling against the wind and I’m behind almost every cyclist up hills some days. But did 500 miles last month. I’m using Strava to beat the segments ive done before.

What kind of bike do you have? I have a 10 year old mountain 'cyclocross' bike & it weighs in at a huge 14kg (modern road bikes are about 9kg). I was going to take advantage of the cycle to work scheme, but then it occurred to me that I was getting harder & better exercise on mine going up hills sat upright with the wind coming at me than I would a modern road bike, so I stuck with what I have. Plus the fact that when you look at bike specs & descriptions its totally bewildering, like a different language :)

I'm a cyclist (although not a MAMIL type) and it does make me chuckle when I see/hear hefty blokes who have poured their beer gut into some lycra, chatting about the benefits of their new super lightweight rims that cost a bomb but have shaved 100g off the weight of their over-priced plastic bike.....

....it certainly is "the new golf" in many respects.

I think those types have got the concepts inverted, heavy bike, lighter person will improve times...

yeah seen that a lot, especially since lockdown- I think that some people like the idea of a gleaming, great looking bike with all the modern gear, but then get a very harsh dose of reality when they try to go up a hill and realise that it involves a lot of physical effort.

Some of the prices for bikes when I was looking were mind-boggling- the limit for the cycle to work scheme is a grand- you could be looking at more than double that just for an "entry level" bike. To be honest I found it all too confusing & decided to stick to the one I have which delivers one hell of a lung pounding up the hills near me :)

Yep. I’ve heard of 20 st blokes breaking carbon frames and arguing with the retailers about it being a frame fault. Same bloke broke 2 frames.

There are a lot of cyclists out there and during lockdown it was all good. Many in their 50’s. One 80 year old did 1000 miles last month.
I’m happy in my Adidas shorts and cycle top but wouldn’t lose the cushioned cycle shorts under!

I’d admit to being hooked at the moment. The roads are the same ones I drive down and rode a motorcycle along but it is different, healthier and clears the cobwebs away.

I’ve used it for about 18mths and love it. Easy to take to work and bang in the fridge. I only use it for lunch so technically replaces the sandwiches so now Monday to Friday I don’t touch bread which is great (weekend gloves are off). Don’t feel starved at lunch but sometimes does weird stuff to your guts!
I think any weight loss is all in moderation, people go from one extreme to the other and then wonder why they fall off the wagon after a few weeks. I knew someone who started huel for all 3 meals and lasted 2 weeks. Too much too soon and body didn’t like it (also willpower weined badly!).

I know one who fits this bill, probably a 9k bike and does not feel any benefit. I’m guilty of buying decent gear, total roadie. Cycling is my passion, currently do about 200 miles per week indoors and out, have 3 bikes and could easily buy another! Lockdown has improved me no end but also great to see so many more cyclists out (although they need to read up on etiquette). Don’t think Boris’s revolution is going to happen however!

Thanks, is it just like a protein drink? Might try some for work or breakfast

Any recommendations on flavour?

Without sounding like a sales rep it’s more than just a protein drink...it’s nutritionally complete. So you “could” literally live off it forever. That’s what I really liked about it...I probably get way more nutrients today than I did previously even though I’m on a much more calorie controlled diet.

I’d recommend getting the black edition (more protein less carbs) and I’ve had both the vanilla and chocolate flavour. Both are okay but I love the vanilla one.

Top tip would be if making it in a blender or nutribullet our and 2/3 ice cubes in it as aside from the obvious of making it nice and cold it gives it a bit of a smoother creamier texture. If I’m the road then colder water the better and I would still stick an ice cube in the shaker if possible.

One meal a day is a sensible start. Let me know how you get on! I’ve lost 14lbs since January 1st...17 since November last year and my main method at the beginning was Huel. Helps to give you some discipline which is what I lack

Think of the matrix and the white stuff they eat! It has a protein content but a balanced meal so technically designed so you could live off it. Tastes better than the matrix stuff though!

I think I might be due a new road bike soon. I’m biding my time until the glut arrives on eBay again. Prices for bikes are through the roof at the minute but should drop pretty soon again once people can get to the pub instead of going out on their bike.

I'm not slating them...each to their own and all that....it just makes me laugh a little when folks spend big bucks to lose a few grams off the weight of their bike....just pour 100 ml of water out of yer bottle & save yourself a few hundred quid!
I agree on the etiquette of some new riders, regardless if they're roadies or commuters.
Some dick undertook me yesterday as I set off from the traffic lights....didn't even know he was there! ..he was on a e-bike so his acceleration was obviously higher than mine...I chased him down to have a word but he had ear-buds in and refused to even look at me.....I then stopped at the next lights....he went round them on the pavement.....

.....and don't get me started on e-scooters.....fucking hell

Ebay is fucking ace for bike bargains.....I think we've discussed this before. The amount of top notch gear that goes for a song....I got a beauty of a Genesis last year as it was listed "for repair" ....re-set the brakes, re-indexed the gears, quick clean....good as new.
I've got 4 (and a half) bikes at present.....so probably can't justify anymore shopping till I sell one.

I have a hobby rebuilding and renovating old mountain bikes. I saw one a couple of weeks back on eBay and went to £150 which was the going rate as it needed a few retro bits getting. It went for £290!
I’ve stuck one of my bikes on hoping for £300 and first bidder is at £350 with nearly 60 watching.

I'm gonna get some of this Huel stuff, I have hit the wall and it must be something to do with diet... gyms are back open so I'm going in every other day for at least an hour on weights, then 30 mins on a treadmill or elyptical trainer, and on the nights I don't go in I do a few abs/ pressup type exercises on the mat at home & then go for a 5k or a mix of walking & running for up to 7/8k- but in the last few weeks the body fat % is stuck at about 17%, all progress has completely ceased, its like my body is refusing to go any further. I'm more active now then ever & don't have any joint pain so I now don't think its overtraining, so its got to be food. Maybe a bit of complacency crept in, I do treat myself to the odd bagel & more bread than I used to, and I got lazy- instead of taking steam veg in for lunch I'd have a can of kidney beans or something- carb intake has probably shot up.

I am no expert, but from what I can see whatever I was doing to lose weight no longer works to tone up & really get the last bits of fat off. So having something set up just right for nutrition which can just be eaten fast- sounds like the answer.
