You do realize there are other players available, it's not Flanagan or nothing, you know that?
I’m aware of that but the point being made was that He’d probably be a better option than Pask and Drysdale.

besides the whole hate for this guy stems from him playing for Sunderland.

You have no idea if he is a better option than Pask, Drysdale or even Williams. He has more experience for sure, but that's it. Unless he is being brought in as a starter what's the point of wasting what is likely to be a tight budget on signing him. Young players with promise have to get their opportunity at some point, normally through first team injuries, and blocking those opportunities could prove counter productive to a club like ours that looks to get by through its own means.

The only point I will concede on is if it turns out that we do sign him, then MR's record warrants giving him the benefit of the doubt, which I would then do. At the moment though we haven't signed him, so if I think he looks like a potential crap signing I will say so. Given his performances against us, and that he is not a ball playing centre back, I will be very surprised if MR is interested anyhow, and this smacks me as an agent led story, designed to put his name in manager's minds. By the way my 'hate' for this guy isn't because he plays for Sunderland, I have no time for our bullshit rivalry, but because when I've seen him play he hasn't been very good.

I like the whole 'just watch the Sunderland highlights against us to see how bad he is' (basically referencing the 4-5 game). Imagine what Rotherham fans would think of McFadzean based on the same logic...

Or Pompey fans after 3-3, or Bristol Rovers fans after 1-1...etc
There’s some very passionate views being expressed about a player most of us have rarely seen, and whom we might not even be signing.

But it's not like the Sunderland fans are up in arms about him leaving either and they do see him regularly. It's not foolproof but it's usual a decent barometer.

If we did sign him good luck to him and I'll give him a chance to prove himself. But right now I don't think he'd be a worthwhile signing as we've got a decent number of centre backs and other areas of the team need strengthening more.

And I don't care that he plays for Sunderland. It's a bullshit rivalry.

Bullshit, so you spent the viewing time taking mental note of Sunderland defenders and low and behold we are linked on the rumour mill with one and you trawl your memory bank to this particular defender as I said bullshit

While I accept it's wise to take such views with a pinch of salt some of the Sunderland views on him are interesting. The common theme about his poor distribution makes me find it hard to see him being a MR type player:

'Let him go, he's shite.'
'Please. Take him. Shocking defender.'
'He's hopeless. Get shot.'
'I would like to pay a special tribute to his passing. Possibly the worst i have ever seen'
'I don't mind him as much as others seem to hate him, but his passing his truly shambolic for a pro footballer.'
'Fucking mental if there are Championship teams after him'
'I'll miss him just booting the ball out of play a few times a game'
'We signed Wright and Willis last year. Both better than Flanagan.'
'Bizarre considering his pathetic display against them in the 5-4.'
'Willis for Flanagan. I know who's got the better end of the deal here.'
'Not a chance he’s championship level'
'He’s atrocious'
'I actually can’t believe he’s linked with championship clubs it’s actually hilarious'
'He’s awful. Weakest CB in English professional football. Would be pretty chuffed if he went to Coventry'
'He never has and will be a footballer, get shot!'
'I can't think that Mark Robbins won't come up with somebody better than Flanagan. He surely doesn't rate him for Championship level. It's the equivalent of Grayson signing keepers.'
'Flanagan is utter shite, and I'm being generous.'
'Flanagan is limited at this level, and if they sign too many like him they won't be staying up'
'Flanagan will be no big miss..For a centre back his distribution is woeful.. Nearly every ball he plays up the channels goes out of play.'
'He is Champions league standard at kicking the ball out of play when under no pressure whatsoever'
'I hope he does turn us down. He’s fucking shite. Needs a rocket up his arse.'
'Willis is ten times the defender. Not sure where we got him from..'
'Worse centre half than the three we chased out the club recently.'
'For a player who for the past two season couldn't pass ball to other defenders and when he did manage to aim for a player with a forward pass the ball usually went out of play , why would anyone want him to stay?'
'I don't rate Flanagan at all, he's clumsy and has a poor footballing brain, physically quite athletic and fit but lacks actual footballing skills. Absolutely awful player.'
'I’d also add that he has an appalling habit of switching off and ball watching at set pieces.'

ffs can you read? No he was that bad, he stood out above the others. I suggest you take a look above at the Sunderland fans views of him. I wonder how many times they've seen him play!!

I've seen enough of him to say he definitely won't be first choice with us but if he's coming (big if) it'll be due to his versatility - he'll likely be 5th choice CB & backup for both fullbacks.

My concern is that he's pretty poor on the ball which goes against our other recent signings.

He was released on a free by Burton despite still being under contract there & Burton fans also aren't exactly glowing about him - either as a CB or LB.

If there is truth in it we have got to trust in Robins, Badlan etc. though, they've earned that right.

It is going to be a long hard season full stop. And was always bound to be so.

I also wonder that only Rose, of the current back three, has the requisite pace. Hyam wasn't quick even in League 2 (look at the third Yeovil goal in the 2-6).

Robins does like buying lots of centre halves. Flanagan looks like useful back up for a 60 match season.
I think the signing of Flanagan is insurance on the sale of Rose to Leeds

He was part of the meanest defence in the league conceding 32 goals 2 more than us but played 2 games more so if he joins I’ll give him a fair chance, that’s what decent supporters do.

and if you look further, they are saying the same things about their owners as we did about SISU, almost word for word. It looks like the new NOPM movement is alive and kicking up there.
and to think they took the piss about wanting us to go bust, now they look more likely to. fuck 'em all

Wouldn’t it be fun to show new signings the SBT threads made in their honour

I don't think it would bother them that much. If it does then it's probably advisable they find a different career because they should know full well that criticism (warranted or unwarranted) is part and parcel of the game - especially from the fans.

Nah I imagine they’d find it funny but I’d like to see the reactions

In my opinion, criticism in the news or forums is to be expected and the players should choose not to read this stuff if they aren't going to like it. Abuse aimed directly at them on twitter or in person is wrong in my eyes.

If you look at Sunderland’s squad on an individual basis it’s better than ours, we just found an effective system it doesn’t mean all their players are rubbish. To come here he’d likely be taking a drop in wages

Yeah exactly. I'd find it hilarious if fans were calling me shit after watching me play for one game or in most cases not even once. I think most footballers try to learn to brush it off and see the funny side of it.

Yeah unfortunately it's a part of the game and it'll never change so the choice is there. Either look for it and let it get to you or just ignore it.

The Sunderland games this season and last .... what about you?

I normally pay no attention to the opposition we play unless they are notably good or bad. As soon as this link came out I knew who he was though, and it wasn't because he was the new Franco Baresi!!

Now there's a player. Him and Maldini in the same defence? Forget about it! Channel 4 really missed a trick with all the lockdown vintage football on by not giving us some Football Italia. Also the best footy show theme ever.

There'd be an even bigger, angrier thread if we did sign you, tbf.
