looks like care homes are now becoming a huge issue.

Yeah just seen the slide showing they’re still rising rapidly. Doesn’t say much when the original strategy was about shielding the vulnerable that arguably that’s where we’ve done the worst.

Just a few points for the several posters falling over themselves to try and sound smart by repeating what the government experts said last night or saying the whole thing is hyperbole.

Most of us saw the press conference last night and understand what the plan is so please stop condescendingly explaining it to everyone on the thread.

Look at the bigger picture. No country is following the strategy we are. Our strategy is unorthodox and high risk. They’re all listening to their own experts who are coming to different conclusions. Our plan may prove to be the best course of action in the long term, only time will tell, but even if that’s the case things aren’t that straight forward.

Firstly, the day after the government announced the new phase they’re already losing control as organisations are shutting things down anyway. You might consider that “hyperbole” but almost every other affected country is doing similar things, sports seasons cancelled etc. The league can’t function with teams having to go into self isolation. Delay fixtures for two weeks and you’ll just have other teams in isolation.

Secondly, there is going to be huge political pressure on this strategy. Journalists were already asking awkward questions last night. What do you think the public reaction will be when pensioners are dropping by the hundreds and the government are saying “herd immunity”?

The strategy might have been “war gamed” by a nerd with a PPE degree playing at being a tech entrepreneur but that doesn’t mean it’s going to survive contact with reality.

I actually think the broad idea is smart but it’s going to take balls of steel and the public reaction to it is going to be intense as people start dying in higher numbers.

You think we will have a higher death rate than Italy? Wow

Bump.

You are absolutely right. I think it’s a criminal act to have returned covid positive patients from hospital to care homes

Yep worse death figures in Europe and expect it to be significantly higher as we’ve not done the lockdowns done elsewhere

Every country has different death measurements still I’m sure dine in here are gagging for us to be top of the league

Er we are talking different about different measures

Also shows you as being a bit sick wanting people to die?

Ha good try old timer. You keep grasping at those straws and projecting your own world view on others.

You have a track record of being categorically wrong and yet you are still arguing with everyone on here. You should be enjoying your retirement.

As I keep saying we're going to be at 500 + deaths a day for a prolonged period

Which makes the talk of lifting lockdown a little premature, no? If we’re less past the peak and more at the plateau?

He also maintains that we've got to 100k tests a day. Fucking crazy.

they're all over the shop. Constantly contradicting what they've previously said, constantly contradicting each other, constantly missing targets.
Sunak seems to be the only one who's got a handle on his brief and a couple of them have disappeared altogether. They're a fucking shambles.

Depends what you would expect? Less harsh lockdown than other countries so you would expect it to fall slower.

It would have been interesting if a track and trace app was ready that might have given some data on how the infection is spreading under lockdown, is it supermarket shopping, lack of measures in the workplace, public transport etc.

Seriously, enjoy your retirement.

Hardly as I’m not even retired - oddly you can get another job

Wow you've really done me there. Can't believe I didn't know you had a job after banging on about your pension.

Oddly you can have both you know - I haven’t even actually touched my pension

They are not thinking about it in terms of safety, they are thinking about it in terms of having to start the economy again while trying to minimise deaths. Its a long, long way from over yet.

Reminds me of some people on here who jump from one tenuous "yeah but we've done really well" tirade to another.

It's actually quite stunning how in three messages you managed to go from defending yourself from an accusation that you're wrong about everything to suggesting I wasn't aware you could have a job and a pension. Olympic level deflection and diversion, well done.

Er you raised the pension not me. I’m not wrong about everything and I’m glad I occupy your thoughts as seriously you don’t occupy one second of my thoughts. I vaguely recall your boring slugfest with David - I wouldn’t otherwise have any thoughts whatsoever - that’s the difference I guess - people notice me and you just go through life being - well - unnoticed

I'd be a lot happier with another three weeks and then look to lift things, all things being equal

Glad to hear they're gradually loosening things, the sunshine will do everybody the world of good. Places in Spain are not really designed for constant indoor living with the small windows etc.
Anto Ryan has been streaming stuff on YouTube, my father in law was watching him the other week.

Lot's of people been doing this mate, helping keep people's spirits up. Some also offering to do free shows when the bars are open to help them out.
