Moon Landing 50 Years Ago (1 Viewer)

Why hasn't anyone been up there since the early 70s? You'd think that some prat like Richard Branson would have gone up by now considering that they managed to do it fifty years ago with a few cornflake boxes and a calculator.

You see, you’ve now hit on another issue. The cornflake boxes are much smaller these days, so don’t fit the designs anymore...

We need to be spending on space travel.

Considering we’re fucking the only planet we’ve got it’s kinda our only hope.

It took Voyager 2, 12 years to reach “close” to Neptune, travelling at 35,000mph. And it takes Neptune 165 earth years to complete one orbit. I like to learn about space and felt I should share these two facts.

Apparently man knows more about our solar system than it does about Earth’s oceans.

...And now I’ll go. Thanks for your time.

I reckon they recorded it as well as a 'just in case' should the live pictures have failed/broken up. Imagine the conspiracy theories had they gone up, not had any pictures and said " we did go up there, you've just got to take our word for it"? For me the fact the Russians didn't dispute it when the space race was such a big thing says a great deal. Nowadays both sides would be coming up with all sorts of outlandish nonsense to discredit the other.

One thing I've always wondered though is the satellites we've sent to the far reaches of the solar system billions of miles away and manage to get data and pictures from but we still can't get a reliable mobile signal if you're more than a few miles from a transmitter. The O2 is sponsored by EE, and I can't get a signal on my phone in that place even though I with EE!

The O2 is sponsored by EE?
Really?!
Wouldn’t that be like saying the Nike Store in London is sponsored by Adidas?

And for the record the Earth & Mars apparently (so some geezer on R5live said) only align correctly for a few days every two yrs for us to get there, & it would take 7months to get there!

It is far less straightforward than firing up a rocket with a couple of chaps in it.

Watched the CBS coverage "live" yesterday, hope they do the same on Sat/Sun, it's was quite inspiring. There's a cracking web site Apollo 11 in Real-timewhere you can scroll through the whole mission if you're geeky enough!

NASA have said that a lot of the photos taken were touched up for publicity purposes - so in hindsight they didn't do themselves any favours by adding fuel to the fire. But there's no doubt they went there for the reasons you've stated, plus probes etc from other nations have mapped every part of the moon and have documented some of the kit and trails left behind.

Can't help you with the mobile signal, other than on a space ship you're probably transmitting using a narrow band through a vaccum to massive receiving dishes. I'm on Three, it's not much better :D

They're talking about the Moon on the radio now. A doctor in a hospital said when there's a full moon they definitely see an increase in patients acting strange etc. I thought that was a myth ? Obviously not !

Ask a primary school teacher - I suspect they will say the kids become somewhat hyper-excitable & often more unruly when there is a full moon. The sun & moon impact tides on large expenses of water...so probably impact small ones like we have in our bodies too to a degree. Significant enough to influence our attitude & behaviour maybe?

It's where the term 'lunatics" comes from. Maybe there is some basis in terms of gravitational pull and given we're largely made of water it does have an effect on us. No idea if there's any scientific merit in that though.

Supposedly a lot of doctors and nurses believe full moons to be a time of higher admissions and births but research found it to be bollocks.

A study from the American Journal of Emergency Medicine found that, when analyzing admissions over a four-year period, there were no significant increases on nights where there was a full moon. And a paper published in the Nursing Researchjournal also showed that there was no real relationship between moon phases, hospital admissions and birth rates.

(But this may not be true for our furry friends: According to the Wall Street Journal, another study found that dogs and cats are more likely to visit emergency vet clinics on evenings where there’s a full moon.)
