Listening to 606 radio phone in tonight. Main discussion is on Celtic and Brendan Rodgers. He has left the club to go to Leicester leaving many Celtic fans angry, and Chris Sutton said Rodgers is out of order, and reckons Celtic are one of the biggest clubs in the world, and both them and Rangers would definitely be top 6 in the Premier League.
I know a few Celtic fans here in Cov who reckon their Club are the biggest in the UK, but I think that's more about fan base.
What do others think ?

Both them and Rangers are definitely in the top 10 biggest clubs in the UK, probably top 5 tbh. I think Celtic could make the top half of the Premier League, possibly Rangers too but can't see them breaking into the top 6 currently.

Not a huge club if their manager would jump ship to go to Leicester.
But perhaps that says more about the Scottish premiership versus the English premiership.
There is no way any Scottish club would ever challenge in the English league.
Just look at their recent records in European competition. Pretty pathetic.

In terms of fan base they are probably the best but with their current squad they'd get relegated from the Prem. If they had the money that the prem clubs get they'd be challenging for Europe every season but currently nowhere near good enough

If they had access to the same TV money and nearly instant CL qualification it's a no brainer. When the playing field was level they more than held their own and would do again if given the same means or an oil tycoon

Currently, mid table Championship at best.
A few seasons of premier league money invested and a few private investors and then MAYBE and only then would they be mid table prem. Don't think they'd be anything more.
If an Arab billionaire bought them up maybe more.

Quiz question. What's unique about the Celtic team that won the European Cup, and not that they were the first British club to win it ?

Without a doubt with similar resources both them and Rangers would be right up there. The only reason they're not at the moment is the resources in Scottish football. If they joined league two they'd most likely be in the premier in 5 years and attract the sort of buyers interested in the big teams due to the marketing potential.

The biggest team debate is endless and depends on what criteria you use. For me, I'm not sure either are top ten...Mine, in no particular order would be;

Liverpool
Man United
Arsenal
Real Madrid
Barcelona
Bayern Munich
Borrusia Dortmund
Juventus
Inter Milan
AC Milan

Celtic are a huge club worldwide. It’s a very strange move from BR especially months before winning the treble treble (an incredible achievement). Leicester are just another team he’ll use and jump ship as soon as he’s had a slight bit of success - the blokes a dick!

Or he’s sacked because Vardy doesn’t like his style of play.
Rogers had his chance in the premiership and but for a Gerard slip could well have been viewed as a great success. Has he really got what it takes to get Leicester into the top 8? I don’t think so.

My question now should be : What makes a football club big ? Is it trophies won, fan base, history ?

bit of everything I think.
Support when a team is doing shit is a big thing for me.
No matter what people say about Man U. Their support stuck with them in lean times.

Celtic are a big fish in a very small pond, fan base wise I would guess they are in the top ten biggest supported clubs in the world but it’s just a hunch nothing to back it up with.

We're classed as a big club. I love that being a fan for fifty plus years. Newcastle are called a "massive club" but haven't won a trophy since 1969. They have big support though, fifty thousand at home games. So big support must mean big club .

I would describe them as big, but not huge.

As they are I reckon they'd be on a par with the middle-lower teams in the Prem BUT if they were in the Prem and had access to that cash they could definitely be top 6. Probably attract a big investor too which could push them into huge club territory.

Celtic are a massive club however their current squad would struggle to stay up in the Premiership, they’d be helped by their home and away support, Celtic Park would get them points on that basis like on the big European nights.

They really lack an out and out goal scorer like they’ve had many times over the years.

For me only Kieran Tierney and James Forrest are players that’d play in the top end of the prem.

Celtic is definitely in the top 10 biggest clubs in the UK and far bigger than Leicester. A current Leicester ex Arsenal fan I know reckons Leicester are one of the biggest clubs in the world as most of Thailand support them hahaha

Celtic and Rangers are massive clubs, Celtic had European glory and rangers technically the most successful club in the world. If they both dropped into the prem next season, both teams would struggle and most certainly wouldn’t be top 10. They have large attendances but with the money in the prem that’s not overly important. I would however give them 4 seasons and they would be up there with those seasons of accruing premier revenues.

The other difficulty they would find is attracting players to Glasgow as the majority still want to go to London for the lifestyle or the north west for success

Historically both Rangers and Celtic are two of the biggest clubs in football but in the reality of the modern game they’re not.

Why is it a strange move? So Celtic are a big club obviously but playing in a piss poor league that is no preparation for Europe as shown year in year out.

Maybe he needs more of a challenge. Managing Celtic is like playing FIFA on amateur mode every weekend

It pains me to say it but the Green and White s***e are a big Club, I would say they're still some way off the biggest clubs in the UK however, the likes of Man Utd, Liverpool, Leeds, Villa and many others (including the blue side of Glasgow) are all above Celtic in terms of club size.

Leeds and Villa? Hilairious! Celtic and Rangers have supporters clubs all over the world. Impossible to quantify who's the bigger of the two. Don't think either Leeds or Villa could bring anything like the numbers Celtic brought to Seville in 2003 or Rangers to Manchester in 2008.
