Andy Murray retiring (1 Viewer)

That's my first prediction of the year right. Said he'd retire this year, with Wimbledon aiming to be his last appearance.

I reckon he's faking the injury - he just doesn't want to play tennis and he's too scared to tell his mum!

Fantastic player, shame his career has been cut short early and a shame he played in such a tough era and will end with 3 grand slams where in Tiger Tims I’m sure he’d have been nearer double figures!

Wish him all the best and hopefully he makes it to Wimbledon
Nah he won’t make Wimbledon and to be honest i think it would be a bad move to get beaten by a 150 seed. He just cannot play at this level anymore and as painful as it is, he needs to stop before he does further damage. Not mad on the sport but at that level it takes an incredible level of fitness and power. I think he was guilty of over training at one stage which has probably cost him. Regardless at what level, you need to listen to your body

The quality that he played in was unbelievable, he locked swords with three of the finest players in history and held his own for so long. Some of the tributes coming from those three alone showed how much they respected him as a player.

Yes. I've never been a particular fan of his but really respect his achievements, he should retire with his head held high.

As expected Murray lost in the first round of the Australian open. He is still maintaining he wants to bow out at Wimbledon.

No he isn’t he’s now considering a further op to extend his career. Today’s performance was phenomenal

He did put up a terrific performance to fight back from two sets down. I didn't realise he was considering another op.

He made Wimbledon and tennis as a whole, a more watchable experience. I was always an "average" tennis fan, only watching the men's singles at Wimbledon on the TV each year. Back in the day when Rudeski and Henman played, you always hoped they'd reach the final and win it. But with Andy Murray, you expected him to win, and when he eventually did, it was a fantastic day for British tennis. I willed him to win every game. And now, it will be a very long time before the UK produces another player like Andy Murray. I hope he enjoys his retirement with his wife and two young children.
Britain should be very proud of his achievements.

I liked him because he stopped the bbc from trotting out it’s been however many years since a Wimbledon winner

I'm a huge fan of Andy. I do understand his injury woes. However I do beleive he is suffering as much mentally as physically. I think the physical side can be mitigated further and he needs to man up and get beyond his present troubles. Too long out through injury has lessoned his confidence, his ability to consider his ability and capability. It seems all too soon and easy to give up now. I've seen his post on Instagram and elsewhere and his training has been phenoninal, more than you would imagine from someone with a hip injury that's for sure? I can't therefore get my head around this. However he has no coach, no adviser and since Lendl has sorely missed the influence. But wait he suggested a second op to extend his career? is that because he just played an in form player after long injury woe and no games underhis belt to speak of and almost pulled off a win? Yes mentally he needs a re-think. get the op done, get back on the bike like Nadal and aim to be back as quickly as possible. Get lendl back, get yourself back. he's way too good to quit yet.

I’ve just picked this thread at random but Murray really is a sensation in terms of application dedication and resilience

he is one of the best sports players this country has ever produced. Not blessed with natural talent he’s worked and worked and now come back from a crippling injury that defies all logic

at 35 he now has to work even harder and has with a dodgy hip beaten a player over a decade younger

He’s incredible

He has incredible natural talent. His skill level and range of shots has always been outstanding.

He has also worked incredibly hard granted but his talent was clear from the start.

Murray does have natural ability - you don't get to where he got to without it. He's just not the same level as Nadal, Federer and Djokovic who are just machines.

But he did have to work hard to get himself to close to their level and I'm not sure why after all those injuries he's still playing, as he'll never get back to that same level now.

Or maybe I do know. Same as the reason why he put in so many hours on the practice court and dedicated so many hours to the game.

Mother.

I’d disagree about the natural talent. The guy would have won so much more had he not been in the Federer, Djokovic, Nadal era.

He deserves so much more respect from the British sporting public along with Lewis Hamilton

Part of the top 4, he trained as a 12 year old alonside Novak as they came through together. Novak has proven to be more enduring but that can't lesson or take anything away from Murray. Had he been in a time period of lesser greats he would have had many more grand slams. As it is he does not have the number of slams of the other 3 but bear in mind in an awful lot of those finals it was Murray! You get nothing for finishing second.
To show the level he did yesterday was remarkable. The question everyone now is asking....can he rest and do it again and go long in the tournament? I really hope so.

If Andy Murray plays between Sampras and Federer - Murray wins significantly more grand slams.

its a shame he was in the era he is

I’m a peaceful bloke and have never raised a hand to woman in my life… but I’d love to punch Murray’s mum in the face.

Not a well known fact, but as a kid he survived the Dunblane massacre. He says he doesn't remember it, but experts say that he chooses not to remember and blocks it from his memory bank.

Outstanding. Do you agree he does have natural talent?

It’s amazing your trying to create an argument

He’s more Boycott than Botham

I am not trying to create an argument, but I was surprised that you said yesterday he lacked natural talent, as his talent has shown through throughout his career. His range of shots and variety of play has always exceeded that of Nadal for example.

All I know is he had a better career than henman, problem Murray had was playing in the same era as 3 all time greats ..

If he was starting out today he'd go on to win alot more
