Will be the biggest club in league one? (9 Viewers)

Looking at the promotion hopefuls in League 1 then Charlton, Sheff. Utd and Sheff. Wed all look like good bets.
That would leave league 1 looking bereft of any 'big' clubs for the first time in many a year accept one - Coventry City!
Yes we look like being the biggest team in there next season. That should warm the heart a little as we will have a fantastic stadium and no matter what happens should be able to run from the front among that opposition?
It may be our time to do a Norwich and come up in successive seasons?
Think regardless of who owns us a good managerial pick will be a key element.

I'm preparing for it now and thinking ahead. I believe SISU are already doing so. Season tickets same price, lots of early bird incentives. Running cost will be lowered as far as player contracts are concerned. Sometimes you have to take a step backwards before moving forwards.

Keeping the likes of Bigi and all our young lads will be crucial and very likely. Think they will 'come of age' in league 1 and really grow into a terrific unit.
It may be the most exciting times we have had in years...just around the corner!

It almost make me want to say - lets hurry up and go down!

You are forgetting Pompey and possibly Nottingham Forest, both won more cup-finals than us, been in more cup-finals than us and won the League title and larger support

Although i want the team to stay up and still think we have a chance although very slim i do not think it will be the disaster that most people think it will be if we go down. We have held our own with most of the teams in the championship (losing my a single goal most times than not just proves we really struggle up front) with the team we have now so why cant we be dominant in League 1? I'm not saying it will be easy but players like McSheffrey, Baker, Platt i think will thrive against weaker opposition and i think winning more games than losing for once might have a real positive effect. Also gives our younger players (who i think are decent enough atm but just need a bit more experience) the chance to continue their development plus we might find a few gems in that division :)

for McSheff, Baker,Platt etc, substitute Chippo, Lee Hughes, Lee Carsley, Mo Konjic etc etc and its exactly what we said when coming down fro the prem !

MK Dons will be no pushovers, and I am sure Notts County will be there or there abouts

Add in Pompy and Doncaster and we are looking at at least 7 clubs competing up the top, lets not think we will be run away leaders !

Just remind me what our record is against lower league opposition in the 2 cup competitions.

I would have to be crazy to think we will be run away leaders but i would be massively disappointed if we werent at least challenging for the playoffs throughout the season. We all know that the championship is a very good league but i think the gap between the championship and league 1 is a lot bigger than the gap between the championship and the premier league other than the big 4 or 5

Norwich, Swansea, Southampton etc have allproved what a "winning team" can go on to do....

we arent a winning team, and we need toget into that habit

Is it really that big a gap? Norwich get promoted, then get promoted. Southampton get promoted and the are top of the league. Other teams like Leeds last season, Brighton this season get promoted and then a knocking on the play offs. It's not like league one teams come up and then struggle near the bottom of he championship.....

Yeah but those teams werent winning when they were relegated to League 1 in the first place, they needed a confidence boost just like we would from playing lower level teams no disrespect to the team in league 1:)

When we got relegated from the premiership we all thought we we would have 1 season in the championship , have a good time , visit new grounds , score plenty of goals before returning to the premiership the following season !
And we are still there ( just about ) . So do not expect us to come straight back cos you will be disappointed

Yeah but other than Brighton who have since struggled (even we beat them :)) the other teams are already 'championship' teams so them doing well isnt a massive surprise. Only a few teams have gone down to league 1 and have not come back up within 5 years and those were probably punching above their wait in the championship

The negativity from cov fans is sometimes hard to bare and this is someone who is usually moaning about how rubbish we are. You are right that it is not a dead cert we will do well but from what i have seen i am quietly confident. That being said, we aren't down yet

Well if GR & BR hadn't have trashed the club finances and we had gone down a few years earlier, perhaps that would've happened.

After all we were doing quite that year well till the better players were sold to help balance the books & Hartson came out recently saying he would've stayed if the promises BR made to him about keeping the squad together were not broken.

Anyway, that's ancient history, we are were we are...

Norwich signed 14 players (inc hilt £500k - about our entire budget or this season) plus 6 loanees, southampton signed 9 players (including £1.5m for lambert - x3 okie wage budget this season) plus 6 loan players.

Bit like us then Blinx.

Many said the same thing's years ago when we got relegated, think a few may in for a big reality check if we go down, would love to be proven wrong but really can see us having a tough old time down there, some are even saying to give thorn more time, even after this season.
We need a big freshen up next year in my opinion, the ownership of the club will do whatever it does but the playing side needs a big kick up it's arse, and someone to install a new mentality into what ever players we have left, because we could still have a negative atmosphere around the place if not careful.

The gap between the championship and leauge 1 is not that big. Look at what Hull, Swansea, Norwich and what Southampton are doing.

Them teams all had one thing, confidence from the season before. Brighton had it at the start of the season aswell.

But when we go down we need to build are squad to be fit for the championship. :blue:

I think i have just got to a point when i am tired of being negative all the time so hoping a bit of positivity may bring around a change of fortunes. It might be that we dont get promoted in the first season but it would surprise me if we were still in League 1 after 3 years (that has probably jinxed it now)

There's got to be a reason why three 'championship' teams (Charlton and the 2 Sheffield teams) are the top three

I understand average player salaries in league one are about 1/3 those of the championship. So it is my hope we can fill the gaps in the squad with some decent up and coming players stolen from other terms in the league and pay a good promotion bonus but not a killer salary.

They have the top 3 attendance figures - perhaps that have the top 3 wage budgets? Do they pay £1.2m rent per annum?

Not a bad league 1 team although i would want a proper left back and a pacey winger. Just means we mainly need to work on getting some decent backups in positions where we only have 1 or 2 players

You'd have to hope that team can compete,

I'd love a bit of pace added to that, and also Thomas and Bigi on the bench.Wouldnt rule out ROD who has scored a fair few in that division

Glad this has promoted some debate in another area!

As for Pompey.... definitely not a bigger club than us by a long shot! recent premiership status in defiance of who they are has put them in the place they are at now for a second time! You don't measure bigger clubs by the size of the trophy cabinet alone.

Forest on the other hand have had brilliant success down the years but I don't think they will be joining us in league 1.

A season ago we would have been joining the likes of Leeds and Norwich and Southampton along with the two Sheffield clubs and Charlton.

Next season is shaping up to be very different in league 1. Think we will be the big fish tbh. Pompey may either challenge with us but most likely they will take much longer to recover from their current plight.

I'd be happy just having a team that can be competitive in League One next season. I genuinely believe we are much more likely to go down again than bounce staright back. Unless of course SISU fuck off.

Stark Truth

As a club we are up there with anyone else in that division. That is in terms of our history our fans are current squad our youth system our potential.
Catchment area for players and fans, potential with the right owners who want to invest in the stadium. We could be awesome

With the currrent owners' mindset I would genuinely rate us as one of the smallest teams in the division.

We will not invest in our stadium. We are not trusted by our local government and local business. We are not communicating with our fans and have alienated them
We will sell any player of whome we can get more than a quid and we will not replace them with anything other than a loanee or a kid. We will be in the same situation in that division.
