I heard some bloke behind me shouting at the top of his voice "THIS IS WHY YOU DON'T SELL STOKESY" following that ball back to the keeper. Stokes in that position would have sliced it out for a throw in.

I just don't get our fans sometimes. For a young lad on his debut in front of 13000 odd, it was the right thing to play it back and avoid making yourself look like an idiot by needlessly punting it forward to only be countered.

He showed me a lot of promise

I don't see why he had to punt it back forwards though.

They weren't the only two options, pass it back or lump it forwards. He had time on the ball to see if there was anyone wide to play it back into. There was plenty of time to see if any of players could get themselves free from markers.

I know quite a few people moan and often quite incorrectly so, but this was pretty much the whole ground groaning in unison.

As I say, I would love to see it again. He appeared to have so much time when the ball came to him.

He had to bring the ball down out of the sun, and did so with a great touch. He played it safe by going back to the keeper allowing us to get back on side and go again. I had no issue with it.... the moronic cheers next time he played a forward pass summed up a large portion of our fan base.

Promising debut, although he did get caught under the ball for their winner

He was a bit error ridden. One pass he made in the second half was almost suicidal and had Scunthorpe through on goal. He also seems a tad underweight and was beaten easily for that second goal.

Definitely showed promise though.

Mason did the right thing, ball came out of the sun, he was last man with all charging out towards him, could have lumped it forward but half our team were in off-side positions, he showed good maturity for a rookie. Looks a good player.

Charged down by who though? There was no-one within 20-25 yards of him.

Would like to see it again to be quite honest, because he seemed to have an absolute age on the ball when it came back to him and I am never a one for shouting at players to just hoof it back in.

I always fully accept a player playing it back to be safe if there is nothing else on, but he seemed to have an absolute age yesterday and everyone around me yesterday seemed totally baffled , as were CWR and Roy Barry, the ex City guest pundit on the commentary.

Their players were sprinting out clearing their lines, any slight mistake and he would have been out numbered and they would have been in on goal.

Some of our players were miles offside because of them sprinting out.

Need to see it again, because I am always the very last to get on any player's back.

At the time he seemed to have an age on the ball, but didn't even look and hit it back without thinking. That's how it came across to me.

Would love to see it again.

It was a very bizarre thing to do but agree he looked a bit naive at times but tackled well and think he got his chance because Brown hasnt really shone in pre season ...more to come i am sure

He was very nervy at first and what on earth was that pass back from the halfway line when there was no-one near him?

He got a mighty cheer when on the next occasion he played it forward instead.

Just a thought Otis, as he was following the flight of the ball he was desperately trying to shield his eyes. He controlled it looked up and forward, then turned ran and played it back to keeper.

I think when he looked forward to play it his eyes were still trying to adjust from the sun so he turned and played a safe ball. There also wasn't a lot on except throw it back into the mixer and a couple of ours were still coming back from an off side position.

He kept us possession so it wasn't a massive error and cost us nothing.

Bloody hell, Sterling is 19 and was playing his first ever league match.
Eh?

Not having a go at him, not getting on his back, not saying drop him, not saying he's crap, just saying he didn't play that well yesterday and that was clearly apparent.

Yeah, agree and it might well have been the sun in his eyes. He didn't even seem to take a second thought, even though he did have time on the ball.

My problem at the time was that he didn't even think, even though he clearly had time to do so to see what the best option was. If it was the sun in his eyes, then fair enough. Everyone around by me thought it was bizarre though when it happened. There just seemed to be no thought at all.

Played well yesterday, strong going forward and in defence. I was impressed, thought he outshone Sterling by some margin.

It is only one game though, and he's so young (as is sterling), plenty of time to develop or dip.

Yes. He also obviously has to show consistency and that might be something in his make-up he needs to improve on. He was clearly better than Sterling yesterday though and showed more threat and more composure.

I think he meant that it was mental that he's 19 and that was his first league match. Maybe.

Thought he was our worst player on the pitch - both full backs didn’t fill me with hope. Gets beat to easily in the air and teams are always going to make him the outlet. Did grow in the first half then had a poor second.

I wouldn’t class his performance as the worst, as he did do something’s well and grew into the game. But, as I posted in the Match thread he was the only one standing out for the wrong reasons for me.

Based on pre season, it was the right call to play him ahead of Brown.

He did. Sterling did that one jig past a defender that drew a foul, but besides that didn't show very much.

Stirling also seemed nervous and looked weak and naive defensively. Although he prevented a certain goal in the first half heading it up and onto the bar.
He looks like a proper winger to me and looked good running with the ball. You are right to highlight him drawing a free kick late on by trying to drive between two defenders. But actually took players on with the ball and ghosted past them with ease on several occasions during the game.

Wasn’t that Hiwula that was fouled at the end going between two players? I think the Sterling one was first half.

Yeah, get that, but I'm not having a go at him and making assumptions long term a la Greggs. I am just saying he didn't play that well yesterday and pretty much everyone agrees.
Don't see how that warrants a 'bloody hell'.

Was it him who lost out for he second goal? I assumed it was Agogo given the side of the pitch it happened and us losing the ball in open play?

Thought he looked a far better player than Sterling

Definitely but I think that was Sterling’s first taste of competitive senior football? Probably a bit of a shock for him especially against a savvy, physical team.

Will be interesting to see how he adapts and why he can do.

I'm surprised some of our fans didn't shout "SHOOT IT" as I heard several times around me yesterday, it didn't matter if the player in question was 35 yards out with 6 defenders between him and the goal. I wish they would let them go back and sit in block 14.

I don't know why, I was expecting Sterling to be quicker than he is.

Yeah I was expecting Sterling to be rapid, hugging the touchline and bursting past full backs for fun.

As others have said hopefully it was just nerves, but he had a poor game. Was arguably at fault for both goals too.

Wouldn't mind seeing Grimmer at right back and Sterling further up the pitch

Reminded me of David Bennett, show the ball then take it away in his stride rather than blistering pace. Nothing wrong with quick feet rather than fast legs.

If he's looking like a good prospect that's great news; this has been a problem position for us for too long.

Agreed, but the point is why pick two vastly inexperienced full backs to make their debuts at the same time? What has Grimmer done wrong? And although Mason did ok, was he any better than Stokes at defending. Personally I don’t really like small fullbacks, they tend to get beaten in the air far too easily.
Mason just seems like a clone of DKE ( although it’s too early to judge him yet)
