WHY? (2 Viewers)

Can someone tell me why we sold Marc Mcnulty without having a replacement in position ready to sign? We did not want to sell the player so therefore the deal should have been done at our speed. It's not as though it was the eve of the season and Reading needed him straight away .Now we are scrambling around getting a goal scorer in.Not very professional.

But then by the same token, Reading would then have had to wait on us and that might have scuppered that deal.

It's a chain as someone already said in another thread. If every club was waiting on every other club no-one would ever get sold.

We have probably known for a while that reading have been sniffing around but signing someone of quality takes time unless they are out of contract. Clubs like Portsmouth are playing the same game as we did with reading is relation to player value. Standard stuff really

Is it always the case that players are sold only when a replacement is lined up?
Also, given that most of our transfers seem to go under the radar we just don’t know how long these Chaplin negotiations have been going on for.
It doesn’t feel to me like we’re scrambling around, we’ve identified the player we want and seem to be on the brink of signing him. Unprofessional? Or just how a lot of football transfers can work?
We also possibly didn’t want a player hanging around who obviously won’t be here, scoring loads of goals in friendlies, making our fans (and possibly other players) wish that he wasn’t going eg Conor Chaplin.
PS
He’d better bloody sign for us now.

Yes. The Maddison money wasn’t going to the manager, but the McNulty money is by all accounts that might give Robins the clout to bring in the better players be it permanent or loans to give us a better all round squad to make a realistic bid for promotion, also it may enable us, time will tell, to keep Tom Bayliss another year. Clubs like us always have to gamble a bit in transfer activity and I’m certain MR had his plans and ideas months ago. I like McNulty and his goal tally but he can’t hurt us in the championship but his transfer fee might help us in division one.

Selling players to finance buying players has always happened especially here, I remember us flogging Jeff Blockley to Arsenal for what was then a record £200k fee for a defender That got us Tommy Hutchison, Colin Stein and a young goalie prospect Jim Blythe, didn’t we do well there!

Otis we knew of Reading's interest by the first bid and I bet the player had related his intensions .I notice Portsmouth have waited trying to sort there end out before doing a deal . Like I said it was not the eve of the season . I also think if Mark does not get a deal done for the most important position the side(goals) whatever money he has to do a deal might just disappear.

There was a big difference then £200,000 came in them £200,000 was spent to bring players in ,now if £200,000 comes in your lucky to see half spent on replacements.

I guess MR accepted he was going and just wanted him out the door, understandable to have players that want to be at the club here, on pre season tour etc, I’d rather JCH, Biamou, Ponticelli etc had the extra game time/time in training than someone who was want away.

Well counting the Maddison bonus we have had about 4 million come in and if sisu stick to what’s been said just under half will be used to get players in so nothing has changed really. The big difference now to me is a decent wedge from these in coming transfer fees will be used for new players that’s a first for a long time

We sold him to the first bidder that came along, as we always do, sissu will let Robins buy a replacement, as long as he’s cheap, and then there is money left over to spend on frivolous law suits that they havnt a hope in hell of winning.

None of us have a clue what's going on behind the scenes or any discussions/negotiations taking place
In Robins we have to trust and I'm sure come 4th August, we will have a squad ready to challenge for the top 6.

Great news, an experienced goalkeeper, and two proven strikers on their way then

Completely correct, absolutely nothing to do with the player and agent forcing the move...

Houchens Head I don't see panic on here , would be nice to be proactive instead of reactive . Strickers with any quality are hard to come by and clubs are reluctant to let them go so close to the start of the season.

Like we were reluctant to let McNulty go but him and his agent forced it, threatening that his player would "throw a strop" if he wasn't allowed to go?

There are still 3 weeks to go. Why keep a player and disrupt pre-season when he clearly wanted to leave? Rather sell him for good money and find the right replacement.

Well I wish Chaplin had the same agent.
How many clubs with genuine ambition sell their best player without first securing an adequate replacement.
It’s simple really, you have to play hard ball and tell Mcnulty he’s not leaving until we’ve signed another striker.
Robins bleating on about agents is pathetic, and just deflecting the blame off himself. And all the fans just suck it up.

So you want to keep an unhappy sulking player? Risk disrupting team spirit and forcing a player in to the team? He wasnt bleating he was stating a fact. If it wasnt for the agent he wouldnt have had his head turned so much. We were offered good money for a player who wanted to leave so why keep him and risk having an unhappy player and no buyer?

Reading have paid way too much for McNulty.
We should not pay the same for a replacement as we a league lower. The McNulty money either contributes to the club's pot for transfers or clears debt to SISU. We obviously prefer the formed, but the latter is quite legitimate. The original question is tosh. Robbins will have known McNulty could go, and had identified Chaplin. BUT it takes two to tango, and if Pompey don't want to be sensible, then it takes time. Secondly we could have Chaplin now in return for silly money - and we have been there.
