Anyone any idea why our insurance policy plan increases because we have had our dog spayed?

We have the policy and it's due for renewal. Just checked it over and it says 'dog not spayed.' She wasn't when we got her and took the policy out, but she has been spayed since.

We pay £26 a month. I asked if it changed the policy with her having been done, expecting it to be less, but the advisor said 'No, it will be more, not less. This will now increase it to £29 a month.'

Thought having her spayed would most likely mean less chance of vet treatment as she wouldn't have any pregnancy difficulties etc.

Bit puzzled. Anyone enlighten me?

Just did a quick Google search and cannot see anything saying your payment plan would increase.

Not sure why it would go up, unless they think it's due to complications?

Pregnancy isn't usually covered by insurance anyway I don't think.

Probably worth shopping around, it might just be the usual chuck the renewal up and hope they dont realise trick.

Bonus points for every time you say "bitch" though to them.

Ha!

I have the written renewal quote. Gone up a few pence a month from last year. As soon as I said she was spayed though I was told it had gone up £3 a month.

Did the policy pay for the spaying ?
If that were the case like any claim on insurance despite the words protected NC's etc they like to recoup the outlay .

perhaps they think you have had her 'sprayed' , so she is now a more expensive colour to replace?

That is very strange actually as most insurance companies will reduce the premium marginally as certain infections are less likely so if that really is a reason move companies

Exactly my thoughts.

We had her spayed ages ago and not as part of the policy.

Anyway, have just ditched them. Found a better policy with a better payout and it is less than half the price.

Who have you gone with now? Have only ever had to claim with Petplan but they are pretty expensive :(

Also used animal friends who were quite cheap and never had to claim but they cold call all the time and get annoying.

We are now without insurance for our dog as they Insurer (NFU) moved him on to a geriatric policy at a pricy £45 a month and when we read the new terms, it basically only covered him if he got injured through being run over or attacked, nothing else was covered anymore. Impossible to get insurance for him elsewhere now due to his age and medical history (he's had cancer) so we binned it off and are just putting a bit of cash away each month to try and cover any bills that come up.

We were with pet-insurance.co.uk and they initially were well priced and paid out no trouble after the sudden death of 1 of our springer's in 2010 and when the other one snapped her cruciate in 2011 which cost over £3,000!! Her premium doubled the next year but was still only £22 every 28 days, but it kept going up till it reached £36 every 28 days in 2015 & 2016 and each year there was more things not covered. Last year we were quoted £45 (more than our house & 2 cars combined!!!) and when I contacted them there was no movement in the price and I was told it was because it was for lifetime cover, she is now 14 ffs. To be fair to them I checked on a comparison site and they were all high for similar cover and we managed to get a more basic cover from debenhams for £9. I don't think it has helped that vet bills have gone through the roof and that can mean that dog owners have to get more expensive insurance to cover potentially high vet bills

Insurance premiums are dependant on so many different, personal factors that i don't think you can say one firm is more expensive than another in general terms. My Wife had the dog before we met and he initially went on her parents farm policy with the NFU. When she moved in with me we looked around at other options but NFU still came out comparable.
