Security cameras (1 Viewer)

I've got a bit of bother going on with some neighbourhood kids at the moment and need a bit of advice regarding security systems for my home.

Has anyone got any recommendations that won't break the bank? I'm looking for something to pop in the front bedroom window and probably the back too which can record everything they occurs whilst I'm out at work. I'm well aware I'm going to have my Windows bricked at some point in the near future and want to be able to identify the little bastatds they did it. Any help would be much appreciated, cheers!

Get a big dog with big teeth and a big bark. One of mine is big. And he wants to defend anyone. If anyone came in my house uninvited he would eat them. We never bother locking the house.

The problem with cameras is if they know they are there they just wear a hoody. You don't get the proof you need. But if you can hide a camera.....

I'll be able to hide a camera easy enough, I would love a dog but the wife has cats so that's a non starter. Plus we are out at work more often than not so that wouldn't be fair on a dog.

I understand about someone not being with the dog.

But otherwise not a problem. The cats are there first. They would be the boss. We had one cat before the first dog. Then we rescued two kittens a farmer was going to drown. The big dog looked after them as his own. One of them had kittens. He helped her when she had the kittens. He cleaned each one of them. And she let him. But by then we had a puppy. He tried to help but the cat badly attacked him.

Here is a pic of him with the new born kittens. Have videos but they are too large to put on here.

But when outside the house all he wants to do is chase cats

plenty of basic systems out there Screwfix do one (or other retailers) expect to pay £150-250, I got mine at Grearbest.com just before Xmas, paid £35 for 4 cams and DVR but no HDD (I had a spare 1Tb), systems cheap but images are ok, done expect much better for the £200 units.

Just bear in mind the police won't give a sh@@ about what you have captured there will be 101 reason why the can't identify them.

to have a unit professionally installed by one of the many small CCTV companies out there expect to pay £800+

Good luck, but for me, get rid of the cats and get a bigish dog mate

How can a dog stop kids bricking your windows?

Hide a camera....get them id'd......If the old bill don't help from there then you'll just have to help yourself if you know what I mean.

I bought mine off eBay for about 99 quid couple of years ago. Same thing now on eBay 81.69 but now with 1 tb hard drive. See item no 352029763182 Instructions in box. Took about 2 hours to get the system up and running. Not had any issues with it.

My dog can clear a fence easily. Soft as shit most of the time. Well known and loved around here. But he is also well known for defending.

About 6 months ago a dog got attacked by what looked like a pitbull. My daughter and her boyfriend were walking the dogs. My big dog went for it and saved the dog that was getting savaged. The pitbull looking animal ended up running away.

Get a Yorkie and your windows will still get done. Get yourself something big with intelligence and only a fool will try anything.

That's all fine and dandy...

....But unless your dog lives outdoors and can catch bricks whilst bouncing on a trampoline.....It ain't stopping kids smashing windows

Cheers for the help guys. As much as I want a dog I'm well aware I wouldn't walk it and that would be unfair. Plus 6 cats would either terrorise or be terrorised by it.

I've spotted a Wi-Fi linked camera that I can pop in the upstairs bedroom window that should be able to cover the area I need it to and I can watch it whilst I'm at work too which would be quite nice.

I'm aware the police are not going to be much use if something does happen but if I knew who did it then...well the less said about that the better.

I went to a free walk in health check thing the other day and was asked whether I could get to the hospital right away. Turns out my blood pressure is scary bad and that was before the neighbourhood trouble kicked off so God knows what it's up to now!!

Is it just with you getting the hassle?

I don't think the CCTV will do much even if it does catch them in the act doing it. Little bastards like that would only understand once they had a brick round their head.

The main leader is very well known to the police but as he's 9 or 10 there's not a lot they say they can do to stop him and he knows that so does as he pleases. It's the first time we've encountered him, it's usually the kids next door but they were conspicuous by their absence yesterday.

Yesterday a group of them pinched my wheelie bin out of the front garden so they could use it to climb onto some garages and smash the brickwork off the top. The wife foolishly went outside and asked for the bin back and got a gobfull of abuse so I went out and rescued the bin and it all kicked off from there with threats to come back 5 minutes later with some heavies to kick my door through. After that they smashed the brickwork into smaller pieces and started launching it at the house.

At least if I had proof of who did what when i'm not there then all options are still on the table, police or not.

9 or 10? I was expecting it to be teenagers.

Are they ferral or something? What are the parents saying?

The parents are not worth getting involved with.unless you want your head caving in. I live on the worst street in Shropshire for police callouts, it's where all the dregs from the West Midlands are dropped. There's nearly always a police car or fire engine on our road. Teenagers are too busy mugging people or torching cars to be involved in this sort of thing. Grim is not the word but funds are not available for me to get off the estate and even if I did sell up the house is worth around 15% less than 10 years ago because it's such a shite place to live.

fuckin hell....thats a tough situation & a tough call with regards dealing with it....just watch that blood pressure fella......here hoping the little rats fall through the garage roof

...on the plus side, in my experience many "families" like that are pretty transient as they're so fucking chaotic......so fingers crossed the'yll be chased off by the loan sharks, evicted or convicted shortly....

in the mean-time, see if astute will lend you his super-dog :D

When I had to watch my house I got a couple of cheap IP cams with motion detection and email alerts. Worked a treat through a window so it’s not obvious during the day, but the night vision only worked if placed outside.

I’ll see if I can find them. Cheap as chips and easy to set up. Just need power and WiFi.

No super dog. Just a big overgrown welsh collie.

Cameras work. But not when those you have them for don't care. The law defends scrotums like he is having a problem with. It is an absolute joke. And because the law defends them they take the piss.

Maybe if those that make the rules and laws had to deal with the shite it causes they would put the advantage on the side of the police and law abiding citizens.

Astute has a point about the dog though.

When we first moved in the postman left the side gate open, not knowing I let the dogs out the back thinking nothing of it.

Heard loads of shouting at the front and looked out to see the local chavs all stood on a wall with the dogs thinking they were playing a game, they weren't going to get bitten as the dogs did just think it was a game but they didn't know that.

Never had an issue and safe to say if anybody is lurking about and we open the door and they hear a back they shit themselves.

It's more of a deterant but they can't do anything against a brick.

The kids parents will know how to play the system, at 8 or 9 the police will come out and say whats happening here, they will get told to piss off by the parents and they will call you a grass and act like dicks even more.

This is sadly very true. Had my car broken into the other night (nothing taken as I don't keep anything in it), looks like they did all the road and everywhere nearby over a couple of hours. Loads of CCTV, police didn't even want to look at it. Were more interested in getting me off the phone as quickly as possible and within seconds, literally, I had an email saying they wouldn't be investigating further due to lack of evidence.

Happens on a regular basis now. Hardly a night goes by without hearing of someone's car being broken in to. The only suggestion so far from the police is to get a group of people together to patrol the area.

On two occasions the scumbags have been caught in the act and the police have then said they were too busy to send anyone out to deal with it.

It's very worrying isn't it.

The same when I got jumped. There was two witnesses willing to come forward but the Police didn't bother chasing them up. They decided instead that they couldn't justify putting it through the expense of the court procedure. Pretty much any excuse not to take things further.

I wouldn't hesitate defending myself with excessive force if I needed to now. Firstly because the Police won't help you, but secondly because they also won't prosecute you so long as you say you didn't start it. Farce really.

Yep, had that happen when my wife's car got broken into. Had CCTV of an entrance to where it was but they said unless they had a clear shot of their face while they were actually breaking into the car they couldn't do anything. Even if it showed them carrying the stuff from the car.

Had multiple automated texts about victim support etc but no real action done about it. Just here's your crime number, give it to your insurance.

Have mentioned it on another thread before, I had my car smashed into and the police had the cheek to call me in to ask about giving one a slap and stealing their motorbike and said they couldn't prove who crashed into my car. "The person who was taken away in an ambulance, the one who said to you I took their bike, the person who's name I gave you because I knew who he was" was the answer. Copper just said "make sure anything that happens is in a dark alley" and that was that.

Half the time they actively encourage vigilantes as I bet half the time they would love to do the same.

I've been half tempted to join the Police as a special constable just to have access to the systems and find out the names and addresses of the three people that fucked me up. It was two years ago but it still shits me up every now and again. Once I recovered I was unbelievably pissed off.

Vigilante behaviour will become more common as it seems it is the only way in which you will get justice if something happens to you.

It is very, very worrying.

You deserve that information anyway purely so you can avoid it happening again, let alone for revenge purposes.

This is a reasonable set up which I have got and no problem reading number plates etc. More to keep your house safe though and not too stop people throwing bricks as has previously been said.

I've just installed a NestCam for wide angle shots which uploads footage and sends alerts to my phone but there's an £80 subscription for keeping 10 days worth of recording. In addition I've also installed an IPCamera from Amazon which gives a closer view. This has an internal SD card slot and I've also set it up to record to an external hard drive using iSpy (Freeware). PM me if you want any more info. And to be fare to the local police they were straight round when I caught someone on camera trying to take my new car.

It is threads like this that remind you what you leave behind when you move out of a city. I miss city life. But not all of it.

We still get speed cameras on roads that are safe though.

Can’t find the exact model but there’s loads of IP cams that are suitable on amazon for <£30.

Get a dog! My parents have a staffy crossed with a lab, has the size of the lab and the look of a staffy so looks like a beast, really lovely dog with a great nature, but very protective, they haven't had any problems since. Most people are wary of dogs they don't know and not willing to risk it.

Yeah I agree, moving would have to be number one priority. Cameras won't do anything, they'll just cover up. A dog will prevent them coming in but it won't stop bricks. What about some sort of shutters for the windows and extra security on the doors ?!

tough situation and i feel for you. country is messed up with anti social scumbag families

i hope you can find a way to move house, this is no way to live

The wife is bankrupt (that was a nice surprise a couple of years back) and I don't earn enough to get a mortgage on a garage let alone a house at the moment. With a bankruptcy charge on the house and its value 10% or more less now than when I purchased it I think I'm stuck where I am for a very very long time :(

If I knew where they lived I'd get some highly questionable material delivered to their house from the DW with tracked postage and then send the OB round as soon as it gets delivered.
