No. We need to get over our fascination with ex-players.

They’ve moved on and so have we.

Its never going to happen. Supporters have an emotional attachment to players that have played well in the shirt. Its the same with every club, and is why whenever there's a vacant manager position that the favourites will always include a smattering of ex players.

When’s enough enough though?

Are we going to be linked with him until he retires?

No idea, but last season he was Championship player of the season. This season despite being in a poor performing team and reports that he has had a poor season and played out of position, his stats (assists particularly) are pretty good. He's plainly still a good, impactful player. Whether it would be a good move to bring him back is another matter, but I can understand why fans using this message board might discuss it.

Oh I fully get it but people in here banging on saying we should sign Wilson, Maddison et al.

Just because they’ve played for us before, doesn’t mean they would or should again.

Last 20 minutes in PL chasing a goal, with his passing ability worth considering as a sub option if cheap, but hopefully we can get much better, slimmer and younger. I think a good chance he will go to Wrexham as they sniffed round him in summer and January.

Its not just because they previously played for us though. If they were crap nobody would mention them. Wilson and Maddison have had stand out careers since leaving us. Realistically their salary expectations and injury records would preclude us from signing them, but I understand why some would mention them on here. Football fans are generally dreamers and this message board is often an expression of that. As an example the 'Invincibles' thread earlier in the season immediately springs to mind!

That's a good use of budget isn't it?

If he wasn't an ex-player he wouldn't be discussed at all.

Maybe, but he is an ex player, and was very good for us, and given this is a Coventry City messageboard you shouldn't be surprised or precious about him being discussed.

For right price sure. But he needs us more than we need him now which is nice

Would be the first signing I would make, still only 28. Being back here and with Lampard I reckon we would get another 20% out of him.

Callum Wilson also but on an incentive based contract.

They will fuck him off for whatever they can get for him at season end, still not re-signed and will be into his last year.
Luxury player that they not only famously don't give a shit about regarding squad diet, but also only see a position for him out of position.
He'll go for £5-6m come june.

It's pretty obvious why he's playing for a mid-table Championship side and no PL club came in for him.

I doubt Lampard would sanction the move, mainly because he doesn't fit with the ultra professional approach he has introduced.

If we could get him cheap, and Lampard thought he could get him fit and playing then yes.
If the manager is not 100% on board, then thats it a big no.

And if we go up, and he wants him, he'll get him, but he won't, for the reason you've stated.

There was a deal to be done between the clubs. He however likes his money too much. 'Loves the club' though

To be fair, 2 months ago we were part way through a sizeable portion of crumble and he may have thought about the carbs ..

So he’d have had to take a pay cut to come here?

Do they still owe us a percentage of the transfer fee ? If so could that be incorporated into the deal.
Mad to think he might not make the starting 11, If he was signed

In the short term yes. But would have been on more than his current contract when we get promoted

Blunts fans think he absolutely loves it there too. I think ultimately he's just a bloke who goes out a lot, more than a professional footballer should possibly, so he comes across fans a lot and enjoys the attention, which they translate as "Gus loves it here." Which is fair enough, doesn't mean he has a love for anything other than his wallet though.
Joining one of the most obvious to-be relegated sides to ever get promoted has made him very wealthy i'm sure but he's achieved nothing, he can hold that when we're celebrating promotion.

Ehhh somewhat understandable, promotion isn’t guaranteed and certainly wasn’t in Jan. He’d never have left in the first place if he was happy to play in the championship on 25k a week

So he loves money more than the club. Glad we cleared that up

I wouldn't have taken it either. If the promise is a higher contract on promotion, let's talk in the summer.

We’d be more likely to sign Vik on loan from Arsenal than the Kebab King.

I think the notion of players loving clubs is sometimes overplayed for the benefit of the fans. He didn't grow up supporting CCFC and I suspect he's in it to make what he can, whilst he can.

Add to that the fact that the majority of the players he played with are now gone, and he probably considers there's not much draw to come back, particularly if it involved a pay cut and potentially becoming a squad player.
