The dislike for him by some on here is way ott. He's not perfect but certainly capable of filling in and certainly better than Collins. The suggestion we can't make top 6 with him when we have done exactly that before is also weird.

People talk about a slow ageing Fadz as if he was the sole reason, I'd suggest as much as I like Fadz and he did play well, that 5 at the back would help any keeper but wouldn't create the chances we get now. Any keeper will be more exposed and therefore likely let more in if we're being more offensive, though we do need to take more of those chances created at the other end. I'd say the individual defenders are better than we had 2 season ago (with the exception of Doyle) and so no reason at all he couldn't start - that's the point of a back up until Dovin is fit.

Some of the experienced keepers suggested woudl also command big wages and that's why they are cheap or free. I saw someone saying you get Kepa for £5m. Not only would he not have considered us, but he signed on a 2 year deal for around £150k per week. I know they weren't suggesting we were in for him, but it's wages and contract length that need factoring in for hopefully only a short tem fix. ACL's for keepers are unusual and we don't want to stifle or risk losing Dovin who will only improve and hopefully be our keeper for the next 10 years.

This is a lot of confidence to put in a relatively inexperienced keeper who’s just suffered a serious injury.

The needs of the team come first. This team needs a strong starting GK.

Tbf you're right it is, but I do have real belief in Dovin. In fact at a young age I think he can get better by not even playing as a keeper. Watching, learning, growing as a person and a player within the group will all help him, because he clearly already has the basic keeping skills. Assuming he gets fit then I'm a huge fan of his.

Unfortunately I think we are heavily discounting the possibility that he won’t be the same player when (if!) he comes back this season. If he does, great; if he doesn’t, we’ll have hamstrung ourselves for no reason by not planning for a replacement when we had the chance.

If Collins was going to be starting the season, I would be extremely concerned. For Wilson, it isn't ideal by any means, but is it as catastrophic as some think? I'm not so sure. It really depends on how well he plays. He has shown at times he can be a very good goalkeeper, he just also has moments which can cost games. If he starts doing that then I agree that we could be in trouble.

Ideally you would bring in another keeper, but how do you find someone who is going to be a step up, and is willing to play only a temporary role for a few months until Dovin gets back? It's a tough situation for the club really.

One thing is for sure, if Wilson does start, we need to get over it and back him.

Sign Ryan for a year on the basis that if Dovin comes back firing by January, he can stick around or we let him go somewhere else. He often has left clubs mid season to just get the playing time.

Strikes me as something that works very well for both parties

Surely if he was such a massive upgrade then one of those clubs would want to keep him around? It's like everyone kept saying how good Johansen (sp?) was and every time I've seen him for Rotherham and Stoke, he has a clanger in him. I'm not enough of a GK expert to say if he is good or not, but some get reputations for being one way or the other and then people won't be swayed (in fairness I'm a bit blinkered with Collins this way, but he really (imo) is awful).

Dislike?

As you said Wilson had a good season with a solid defence in front of him. But this solid defence that helped him are totally ignored by many making out he was excellent that season.

The other problem is Lampard likes his sides to play it around the back. Wilson isn't very good with the ball at his feet. Would he be tempted to play Collins who is actually good with the ball at his feet?

I'm neither in the Wilson or Collins camp, however the stick Wilson is receiving off some re the end of the season against Sunderland is laughable, he was sold down the river by his defence for both goals, everyone seems to have forgotten MVE's failed back pass and the defence not being up to speed with the run through for the first, you may say, yeah but Wilson could have positioned himself better or done better, but it's a team game and if MVE had battered that ball into row Z a goal doesn't happen, and if everyone hadn't pushed up for the other goal, then again we've got a better chance of stopping it before it got anywhere near Wilson
That all said I still think we need rid of both and a new keeper in, easier said than done though

So you pay 4 keepers 5 including the young lad in the squad. Plus you would be paying either Collins or Wilson to be idle out of the 25 man squad. I can't see your scenario happening unless either Wilson or Collins is moved on. That might be easier said than done.

We currently already have 5 keepers - Dovin, Wilson, Collins, Varney and Bell

He was and has been at Rotherham too, but as I said he often plays poorly against us which is the only experience I have of him. If like me most of our fans only really see us at close quarters as they go to most games, then I was surprised that before we signed Dovin, everyone seemed to be wanking themselves silly saying he was who we needed. I'm not saying they're wrong, but the opinions are based on what's reported than our own experience and all feels a bit 'emperor's new clothes'

Come on, check his career out vs Wilson for goodness sake. Of course BSBs suggestion would be a massive upgrade, its not even close.

I'm on about v what they have not v Wilson. If he was decent at those many clubs he would have stayed. Why hasnt he? Is he bad for the group which could be worse? So many factors in a transfer and that's assuming he would even consider us or that we would be prepared to pay whatever salary he commands.

He was first choice at Alkmaar then left to be back up at Roma, left again for half a season first choice at Lens. Also ignoring that longer ago he made 120 top flight appearances.

Roma can no doubt afford a better first choice, so probably can Lens.

If he was that good why did he leave Champions league Roma?! Based on that will he be good enough to replace Bradley Collins and Ben wilson ?!

Back-up keepers are there for just that. Back up. They aren't just there to partake in training, otherwise they would be a coach. If your number 1 gets Injured, your number 2 comes in. I don't get why that's Alien to some people. As said above, if we aren't going to utilise the squad what's the point in them being here? If nobody is coming in for them, we are using them. Its that simple. We arent getting a ready made number 1 to sit on the bench once Dovins back, and we certainly wont want, Dovin, New keeper, Bell, Collins, Wilson , Varney and Rachel on the books.

He was let go by Roma and then Lens after playing a bit for them. Those clubs thinking they can get better is pretty fair i think, what level of clubs do you think Wilson would attract if he was a freebie?

By all means, but I don't get the incessant need to try and prove everyone wrong when, from the Poll, you are in the minority? If Collins or Wilson go then absolutely bring in a new keeper.

Ideally we would bring in another keeper (at least until January). If that doesn't happen then I'm happy with Wilson, you don't win the golden glove by accident. What worries me is..... Collins. I never want to see him in a Cov shirt again, he needs to move on too. Get a new start somewhere else, he is a better player than he showed last year but he has the yips.

If we don't get a new GK and Wilson gets injured then we're in the sh*t.

He may not be great with his feet but he's a goalie, his first job is to keep the ball out the net. Which he is pretty good at whereas Collins is incapable of doing.

How dare you question Russell Slade? He's a professional you know.
Fwiw its not worth questioning the decision yet anyway as we don't know what we'll do. I hope Lampard and the team are doing the sensible thing and searching for a keeper as we speak.

You can tell that the knives are out already for Wilson even before 1) a ball is kicked and 2) whether we know he is starting.

Its a weird compulsion fans have to be ready for the blame game so far in advance

We want our team to be ready for the season, Wilson isn't good enough as proved over a prolonged period. I rate most of our squad and was one of the few defending it when people were saying they were all shite as cope for Robins shitting the bed, but that doesn't mean there aren't still some obvious improvement areas.
I'm not sure how people are ok with watching us be a good team but having a keeper chuck away points over and over again. I find it hair pullingly frustrating.

If Wilson starts obviously everyone will back him. But as and when we start conceding more ridiculous or soft goals, it's not like we didn't have a heads up from the last few seasons.

So are you happy with Wright, since if he's scored that header on 90 minutes we'd have been in the play-off final? Whoever is in will concede. I can't think of many off hand that he's been directly culpable for. One or two he could have done better at the same as a striker missing a chance.

And before that's compared with Collins he was literally chucking them in every week, either parrying to forwards for the rebound, general calamity and mix ups or getting consistently beaten at the near post.

Wright is our top scorer over the last two seasons, pretty silly comparison. Though for the money we paid it's what he should be doing.

I just find it a bit baffling to seriously be arguing against signing a much more distinguished keeper on a free, in favour of someone who we know from a lot of experience isn't good enough.

Wright being top scorer but missing lots of chances is no different to those quoting Wilson winning the golden glove, so I think it was a fair analogy.

Your second point I agree with, but only if one is available who would come. You've mentioned Matt Ryan a number of times, but no idea if we're even looking at him, if he would come or if we could afford him. It's not as simple as identifying a keeper and saying we'll have him.

That's why we're shooting the shit on a football forum and not in charge of recruitment. Given that we're a top end Championship club, and looking at where he's played since he left Brighton, it's not a stretch to think he'd be interested and we could afford him.

The point on him is that people are acting like there's no experienced keepers available for free or on the cheap who can do the exact job we're looking for, i.e. provide a safe pair of hands while Dovin gets back to fitness. He's just one example
