Wilson Money to be Reinvested (1 Viewer)

Coventry City development director Steve Waggott has pledged that all the cash from Callum Wilson’s transfer to Bournemouth will be re-invested in the club.

And the Sky Blues’ director of football is hoping that all of manager Steven Pressley’s summer targets will be in place by the time they fly out to Italy on Sunday week.

Having brought in five players – wingers Danny Swanson, Jim O’Brien, and Mohamed Coulibaly, defender Reda Johnson and goalkeeper Ryan Allsop – in the space of 24 hours last week, Pressley is looking to recruit five more – three strikers, a left-back and a central midfielder.

And Waggott stressed: “The fee received for Callum Wilson will undoubtedly help us to strengthen the squad and certainly helps under the Financial Fair Play salary-cap rules.

“It’s not a case of saying ‘we are going to spend the Callum money here or the Callum money there’, it all goes into the overall football budget for Steven to use accordingly.

“If he feels there is a player within that budget that can strengthen the squad that requires a transfer fee, then we will pursue that player.

"But it also means we have got more room for manoeuvre in the players we target who are out of contract or available on a free.

“What’s vitally important is that we put together the best possible squad within the overall football budget and this deal certainly helps us to do that and, as Steven said last week, the way Callum went about things has helped from that point of view.

“We have brought five players in over the past week and we are, of course, looking to add several more as soon as we can.

“On top of all that, the money helps us in the medium term, too, because it means we can invest even further in areas such as scouting and development which, after all, is how we will develop the Callum Wilsons of the future – something Steven is very keen to see.

“The target, for me, is to give Steven his full complement of players if possible – and it’s a big ask – prior to going on the pre-season tour, because that’s vital for the team building with new players coming in,” said Waggott, who structured the Wilson deal to include Coulibaly and Allsop on loan until January with a third Cherries player also due to join.

“I said last week that I was going to try to get 50 per cent of our targets in within a week, which we’ve done, and the rest we have engaged with lots and are developing in all the different junctures, so we’re pushing ahead with as many as possible.

“We need the players in because we want as long as possible to work with them because the fitness levels and whole basis of pre-season is to get them up to the levels for the demands of how Steven Pressley plays his high intensity game.”

Waggott explained that the process has taken time over the close season for a season.

“All the fans have been waiting for the signings and wondering how long it’s going to be,” he said. “We get all of that but we want them to be the right signings.

“Our first scoop of players, as I call it, are all out of Championship clubs so there has to be a little bit longer process to sort out their commercial deals with the agents involved and meeting the players and making sure they understand where we are as a club, the philosophy of Steven and Neil MacFarlane and how we’re going to be set up next year.

“My view is we have got an attention to detail where we run it like a Championship club, albeit in League One, but that sort of approach seems to impress the players to feel as if we are ultra professional, which we are.

"And that if they come and join us, the experience will be positive and they’ll leave us a better player than when they came, which is what every player wants.”

Waggott is confident that even the players who haven’t yet started pre-season training with clubs because they are out of contract will have a decent level of fitness, but time is clearly of the essence.

“Most of the players in the modern game have personal trainers and work towards a certain fitness regime,” he said, but what we learned last year was that players who we brought in weren’t at the fitness levels we required as the season went on.

“The sooner we can get them in – and I stress that they’ve got to be the right ones we bring in, and it’ll definitely be worth waiting for that – and involved in all the fitness programmes the better for the season.”

Believe it when I see it. I want to think the club will reinvest some of it but with major legal bills to pay probably for both ccc and themselves and continued loses at sixfields then I am not hopeful.

I seriously doubt we will pay any transfer fees for anyone despite the money in. 3m will cover the losses IMO.

I do think we will sign another 5-6 players btw just all will be either freebies or loans as proved so far.

More bull shit being fed to the fans how many times in the past have we sold a player under sisu and the same has been said, will just be freebies and loan signings!

It's not all about spending money here, there and everywhere, Waggott is saying we can do that should Steven Pressley require a player that requires getting a Transfer Fee out for, however they can also invest it in player wages, Scouting system, etc, it's like playing FIFA 14 and tampering with the Transfer Fee so you have more wage to try and give you better scope to sign better free agents.

And do "freebies and loan signings" play for nothing then?

The key is 'over all budget' plenty of scope for evaporation.

What do you want the club to say? If this is what they are actually going to do then the football side will benefit from the sale of Wilson.

You do realise 95% of transfers in this league are free - you do know that don't you?

Yawn yawn yawn !
I shouldn't imagine we are paying the Bournmouth players any wages because its part of the CW deal !!
So that leaves us with the new freebies of Swanson, Obrien & Johnson. I shouldn't imagine their wages come anywhere near all the players we have lost !!
So someone please explain what extra has been invested ???

Weird, think about the two most prolific goalscorers we've had for a decade: one was a loan, one was a free.

Yes I agree I just seriously doubt we will pay a fee for anyone. Wages are more likely as all signings so far are frees or loans. That will continue to be the case.

I would rather a bigger playing budget than transfer fees paid anyway.

And everything to do with Coventry City. I would hate to see what you say about a club you don't support.

But I do have a problem with liars !!

The thing is KOK and as proven by CCFC many times, just because you pay a fee for a player doesn't mean necessarily we will get a good player in.

Yes I'm the same about liars. I personally don't have a problem with loans or freebies as quite rightly pointed out Wilson was a free if you like, Clarke was a free and mcgoldrick was a loan and all best strikers we have had for 10 years.

I just don't like being told stuff that isn't true . As we know the Clarke fee was to be put back in and it went no where as normal. So when we are told about CW fee I think exactly the same. Clarke was never replaced properly and within a year we have lost Clarke and Wilson our deadly duo. We have got around 3/4m for the pair and where has that gone? (Grant it it's early for Wilson's money)

Surprised by the omission of FACT from your sentence there. So you can categorically state that the money will not be invested in the team and in other football areas. Is that a FACT?

Sorry but the article of investment back into the team is bullshit surprised you can't see it...

Yes defo that's why I would prefer bigger wages than transfer fees. Plenty of good frees and loans out there and it's what everyone is our league does.

People judge by historical behaviour. Surely you can't criticise someone for taking a very careful view on how the difference will pan out between promise and delivery under SISU. An example might be the new stadium.

In fact, on the cusp of a new season, why don't you tell me what there is to be optimistic about?

I don't know what the majority on here think of Waggott but I can guess most think because he's on the SISU payroll hes one of them and that's it. I genuinely think if we were in the Championship Wilson would not have gone, however we aren't and we need to cut our cloth accordingly. Now the bit where you will shoot me down, when all this is over I would like Waggott to stay. He has kept his own council through out this whole debacle and has looked at the argument from both sides, he has always managed in conjunction with Pressely to fashion a half decent squad and has good connections in the game. I would like to see what they could manage with a well funded club and good owners, which incidentally they could have the biggest budget in the league if we were playing at the Ricoh with an average gate of 10k

It's easy, peasy lemon squeezy for me. SISU are not CCFC. CCFC are not SISU. The 11 players on the pitch, the manager and the staff to me are CCFC and I support CCFC, I don't support anything or anyone else.

This is an argument that is used and twisted to suit. So taking your statement at face value anyone going to Sixfields is NOT supporting SISU as they are watching CCFC, aren't they? Because as you say, you don't associate SISU with CCFC. When I go to Sixfields I cheer for the blokes running around in Sky Blue, not those in the stands in suits. You see. Easy.

SBJ: "I don't associate Sisu as being part of CCFC !" Neither do I, John. Neither do I.

I don't associate Sisu as being part of CCFC !
How can you after all the harm to our club they have caused ?

Exactly but looking at what we have brought in this summer so far:

Reda Johnson - League One Promotion Medal
Ryan Allsopp - League One Promotion Medal
Danny Swanson - Championship Proven player
Jim O'Brien - Championship Proven player

If Pressley can add a few more players who have experience getting out this league I would be happy with that, for instance Tom Eaves, who allegedly will sign today, that will cost money as he is under 24.

Well, if a new season depended on optimism then I don't think I would have enjoyed the last 41 I've witnessed.

Personally for me, a new season and new players is always enough for my continued optimism and enthusiasm; regardless of our situation. Others (such as yourself) don't share that. Fair enough.

um.

In fact, on the cusp of a new season, why don't you tell me what there is to be optimistic about?

I was reading a story a few moments ago (trying to find it to post on here) that says we will be signing Tom Eaves today, that will mean a fee as Eaves is under 24.

With the wage bill currently lower than last seasons even with the new recruits to date, you still believe....
I'm not saying its not the way to go by reducing the wage bill i'm all for it. What I can't stand is the bullshit statements from proven liars in a court of law !!
