What will become of the Ricoh Arena ? (1 Viewer)

I ask this because at present it seems we are ground sharing for 3 years and intend building a new stadium somewhere within or thereabouts of Coventry and so will never play at the so called Ricoh arena again.

So what becomes of the Ricoh arena?
What will become of ACL?
How will it affect Higgs?

No major foot traffic going there regularly seems insurmountable to me.
Contractors like Compass will surely pull out and make claim and there will be others too.

This will be a mess.

Can ACL do anything substantial enough to replace the Sky Blue factor and if so what?

Heard there were a few sports teams already enquiring about using it....would make a great speedway stadium....the bees will need one if the stories are true.greyhound track and a casino in one place would work...it would take alot away from hall green.

Speedway? Can they afford redevelopment and £400k every year? No chance.

Northampton Saints rugby team interested in playing there apparently.

I'm sure there council is keen for that to happen, as well as there fans!!!

Also Coventry already has a historic rugby team......

If they did that. The media situation would be the same!!!

I could see that happening, but not whilst we are owed by Otium/SISU.
Haskell yes, but how likely is this and how far down the road is it.?

Someone was talking about a Midlands Super League Rugby Team recently

Super League? I can't see that, RL is fantastic game, IMO superior in speed and skill to RU, but it's failed to expand significantly despite umpteen efforts. TBH considering the advantages RL offers over RU for the not-so-interested watcher, I am amazed somebody like SKY has not combined the best bits of both codes, there is a world wide game waiting there.

It's failed in London and Wales so what chance Coventry? It's still the 4th (I think) most popular sport in the UK and considering it's only really watched along the M62 corridor and West Cumbria it's crowd figures are excellent. Most football supporters won't realise that the Bradford Bulls often get higher crowds than City.

I agree, I still want City to play there and I can't/don't want to see anyone else there, however this is something that was mooted, don't know the reliability of this rumour but to my knowledge (and my knowledge of Rugby in general is shocking) I can't think of a Midland Rugby team that is big enough to fill the Ricoh unless they created a Super League side which there currently isn't.

I think the point is, they have a number of different options to go down, (I heard a permanent home for the England under 21s as its only a short trip from Burton on Trent.).

However, before any of us get to carried away with rumours lets all do everything we can to convince the FL, SISU and media we are Coventry CIty and we will only play in Coventry.

No they dont Bradfords crowds have been poor for many seasons now. Although Bradford Bulls could offer good advice on how to get out of administration successfully. I do agree with you about rugby league being superior to union

Because it's a lot more accessible to the heartlands fans than both London and Wales? Just playing devil's advocate!
Personally i'd love to see RL take off properly in Cov (but I'd rather it be the Bears than any fake franchise a la the Welsh efforts so far, and playing at an appropriately-expanded Butts Park Arena).

Yes they do and here is proof, their crowds are very good considering they have been rubbish for a few years now. http://slstats.rlfans.com/index.php?generic=1&comp=43&showteam=5

When the Bulls have an average 11k crowd, that is people actually in the ground. Bradford City, with our excellent creative ticketing, officially submit an 11k attendance figure but in reality, often only 8-9k are actually in the ground.

If you had a Bradford v Leeds game at the Ricoh it would sell out, so would a St Helens v Wigan game, there is money in hosting such games as the "magic" games at Cardiff prove, average crowds of about 30k, Coventry is a lot more accessible from the M62.

What the Bulls and many RL clubs would give for a stadium like the Ricoh!

Would bringing a new rugby club to the Ricoh put Coventry RFC medium to long term future in serious doubt? That wouldn't look good on ACL, Higgs or the council.

No it's ludricous. The council end up playing a role in killing two local teams. Worse if it did happen the deal offered would have to be far more generous than offered the club.

Call me a dreamer but I still hope CCFC will be playing there. This is just a ego posturing. SISU and ACL must sort it out within in the next 4 weeks!
Playing in Northampton makes no sense for either of them. C'mon guys sort it out

That was last year when we were getting 15,000 average in championship. Do Bradford Bulls still offer season tickets for about £100? I do concede London Broncos crowds are bigger than we will get next season if we groundshare?

Possibly - and possibly FC/KR too, and these three games I would love to see hosted at the Ricoh once in a while - and would travel over for these even if I won't travel to Northampton - nearer to me or not!.
When I was involved in the Cov Bears during the first stint at the BPA, we were approached to host an 'on the road' Hull FC vs someone else (sorry, can't remember). As a club, we were keen, but sadly it fell through due to the intransigence of the Cov/BPA management at the time.
I think they were shitting themselves at the thought of thousands of dockers descending on the ground!

Dockers that is Hull KR, you would definately upset Hull FC fans saying that

Where did you hear this?

Saints won't move to Coventry, they only get 8k average in Northampton, their stadium holds about 15k, and they want to expand, probably couldn't afford the rent anyway. The likelihood of this is almost 0.

To answer the thread directly, I think the RICOH would become a white elephant, but more importantly, the arena complex would suffer, Tescos, Pizza Hut etc. would all suffer with the lack of 'tourism' from home and away fans.

:D We are talking at cross purposes love, when I said "City" I meant Bradford City.

Surely the Ricoh could lend itself, short term, to all manner of things with a little imagination? Odsal Stadium is a tip (no really, it actually is) but at very short notice about 10k turned up for a bleedin 1980's concert, star turn being Rick Astley, not bad at £20 a ticket. The Ricoh is an immeasurably better stadium than Odsal.

I believe it was a joke

As in CCFC are moving to Northamton etc.
