I'd give Tavares a try in OHare's position, nothing to lose. Tell him to buzz around like OHare does just behind Gyokeres. He's pacy with bags of energy and it's a role he might just grow into.

A good idea, but having played so little football it would take him a few games to get up to speed fitnesswise. Possibly an experiment for half an hour off the bench for a game or 2?

Very true. Waghorn does not need me to explain his poor play, he demonstrates it for all to see. You make the point well about his match fitness and learning his trade, but for me he must have his self confidence shot to pieces. To see Waghorn (and when fit - Walker) constantly put ahead of him, and go on and do nothing, must be soul destroying. If MR won't play him, he should go out on loan to prove himself. The comparison with Ponticelli is a bit unfair, as Jordan had quite a few opportunities before he was let go.
I haven't seen much of Tavares, which is also true of most if not everyone on here, but it is clear from just a couple of minutes of seeing him that he is better than Ponticelli. I have seen him control a football at least once.

I find it odd that you are such a fan of Waghorn who has scored two goals in the equivalent of about 20 matches yet constantly criticise Godden.

Goddens last match was against Sheff United the 13th match of the season. O’Hares first match of the season was match 14 against Stoke.

I’m not a fan of his, but I do think the abuse he gets is unwarranted.
I don’t constantly criticise Godden, I’ve just disagreed that he’s a 25 goal a season striker and don’t write abuse about him.

In the last 7 games before Godden got injured, and O'Hare returned (which was almost seamlessly synchronised) we lost only to Burnley. We won 3 and drew 3. We might play better with COH, but our form turned around before he came back from injury, which suggests we certainly can compete playing two strikers (when we have another one fit). It is a more tried and tested solution than playing Palmer and Allen as 10s together in the absence of COH, which in my opinion will be a disaster. Last night certainly gave us a clue about what it might look like, and it wasn't effective.

What facts were you looking at? I am really not sure what you are trying to argue about here. O'Hare is injured, we have to figure out to play without him. We managed it earlier in the season, playing two strikers, like I have mentioned above.

I've gave Waghorn stick for over a year, dont know why people think its 'unwarranted'

The blokes fucking awful. I cant think of a single positive attribute other than he scored a great pen v sheff utd

For 15k a week hes up there as one of the worst players ever for us in terms of cash to output.

He cant pass, he cant hold the ball, he cant run, he cant shoot, his movements shit, im amazed he can put his own socks on tbf

We will be so much better in the summer with him and Walker off the books up top. Reputed 25k a week there, think of the quality of striker we can get in for arou 18k a week and put the rest towards another position

Think we will see both Waghorn and Tavares start against Wrexham. Will be interesting to see how they perform

Agreed it was Bidwell who bizarrely was in the centre circle rather than trying to stretch the game out on the breakaway

Silly of him. However great players in possession have an instant picture of where others are on the pitch and play the correct pass accordingly. Good players look up, and play the correct pass accordingly. Poor players on the other hand just kick it in a general direction.

For once I thought Waghorn was the right choice, not that he particularly did anything. Cardiff were sitting deep and the only way a goal was coming was a cross into the box, not sure Tavares has the physique to compete in there.

I wouldn't mind seeing two up top with Tavares and Vik from the start one week.

Wayyy too early to say it wasn't effective. Had Palmer's snap shot gone in no one would be talking about formation changes right now.

We need a back up AMC in . 2 strikers could work but I prefer the box

Kane put a lot of crosses into the box when he came on, and despite what some would say they weren't all crap. Unfortunately Waghorn was flat footed (or offside) for the most part and offered no threat whatsoever.

For the frequency with which we get to the byline to cross the ball in (particularly on our right side) we frustratingly rarely seem to find our man. I'm not sure that's to do with physicality, but more that players need to keep calmer heads and position themselves better. If you ever watch the pre match drills where the players play keep ball in tight areas they are clearly capable of doing so, and they do in fact in other areas of the pitch.

Yeah they were sitting back and were dealing quite well with everything in front of them. Bringing on Waghorn was just more of the same - Tavares would have at least run at them which no one else was doing (except Vik) and would have given them a different proposition.

Not saying it would have worked, but felt like it was worth a try.

Tavares wasn't on for long against Sheffield United but his movement was clearly causing their defence concern.

Waghorn isn't a bad player, just not prolific. His strength is playing others in.

He tried a few tbings that didnt come off. They were marginal rather than woeful. Also he did not have that much time to impact.

Tavares doesnt just have gametime to impress. He trains every day and has the opportunity to impress there.

Yes he has pace. But the Cardiff defence had pace too. They did the best job I have seen any team do on Gyokores all season. Out muscled him, stayed with him, bullied him. Totally frustrated him. Some of his appeals to the ref towards the end were embarrassing.

I think Waghorn got the nod for his experience and to try and create some space for Gyokores.

Kane was the one that looked like the game changer. I would pick him ahead of Dabo everytime. Dabo was trying to conserve energy and was blowing after 25 minutes. It was clear Cardiff targeted him early on. Eccles, Burroughs and Kane all better than Dabo.

sorry to me he looked woeful. 2 goals in 16months (one a penalty) you call "not prolific" you are a master of understatement. On his salary that is an awful waste of meagre resources

There was no space to run into, he would've been smothered every time.

I am afraid I disagree with just about everything you write there. Waghorn used to be an ok player but has been really poor for us. Also for me Kane is our fourth best rwb. But I accept it is all subjective.

I am not saying we shouldnt off load him, we should. I was talking about the options off the bench v Cardiff. And the problems they posed us.

Possibly the only goal he will score for us? I hope I am wrong. But from what I have seen I am not convinced he is ready.

Waghorn has suffered with COVID and a series of long term injuries. Hughes was fully fit and cost us a net £2.5 million in the space of a season at a time when we were already heavily in debt.

McDonald scored 8 in 47 and cost a fair whack relative to what else we spent that season. Hilssner as I said elsewhere has cost us £750k over his contract and not played a single game.

Hilssner is on 5k/week?

At least Tavares ran at players today. Attacked the space and shot early.

Time to give him a run. I am still not convinced, his first touch is poor and he his very lightweight in strength for this level. But we are just so short of options. Sink or swim time for Tavares I think?
