MVE was looking like a good bet on that so of course he's the one probably out for the season.

Can I be controversial and be the first to say I think our recruitment has been a little shit this summer?

Someone has to say it!!!

Signing a quality CM would've made this situation much better. Would soften the blow of losing Sheaf and allow us to shift Eccles wide to cover at RWB, where he was capable last year.

I really hope we bring one in in Jan.

Yeah I mentioned this during the transfer window and got absolutely slated for it. The fact remains that Doug has spent none of his own cash this window, yes it may be that he’s had to spend a bit here and there with doing up the stadium or installing the new CCFC shop, and maybe the money from deals comes in over a long period of time but the actual long term cash he’s spent is nothing compared to the cash that we made from Vik & Gus.

We sold two real high quality players and replaced them with hopefuls and a load of CBs. That’s absolutely fine if we’d also strengthened the midfield but we didn’t and now we’ve got a strike force that can’t strike and a defence that can’t defend, purely because we’ve got 0 transition and 0 creativity in the middle of the park. People have said we shouldn’t be splashing the cash but you’ve got to remember that we lost a shit load of players and a shit load of quality, we needed to spend the money just to replace that, never mind make the team stronger than it was. We should have spent at least another £10 mil on the midfield and then we’d maybe have a decent transition and be able to do something with the ball other than pass it in a horseshoe-shape and lose it. Now Milan’s out and we’ve got someone with nowhere near his quality to replace him. I honestly don’t like being pessimistic but I can’t help but feel it’s turning into a real shit show.

Do we have anybody that can dig us out like Vik and Hamet did last year?
Plus, we need to add in the Jan window.
We will have less games from the window opening to the end of the season to "hit some form" and put a run together like we did last year as there were less games from Aug to Christmas due to the world cup. (Obviously more games from December to end of season last year)

In the L1 season no one had gone up in recent history with an away record as bad as ours up to Christmas, but we turned it round, became unbeatable on the road and won the league.

First season back we used the loan market well, hit some form post QPR away and finished quite comfortably.

So it wasn't just last season where we found a way of turning around early season issues.

Of course that doesn't mean it will happen this year but you'd think people would learn from experience to have a bit more pacience.

I’ve got faith in Robins to get the best out of the group. My concern is we haven’t progressed the group as much as we should with £20m.

There's always a risk with recruitment.
Look at some of the money spent on absolute dogshit in the Premier league.

Just because we managed to turn 3 million into 30 with Vik and Hamer it doesn't always follow that the 20 mil spent will reap similar returns.

Still early days and I still think that overall the players we've recruited will turn out to be succesful.

Though having success on a shoestring then fucking it up when we've finally got some cash to spend would be text book city.

I think moving JDS and bringing in Bidwell is exactly tly what he'll do.
I am grateful for Jake Bidwell. He can fill in a lot of different roles. He isn't particularly outstanding but whole hearted and really valuable player. Not quite sure why he has been downgraded , I understand if he feels a bit miffed.

On a wider level...

I've only seen one game live, Hull, and one game in a bar, Leicester(good performance albeit with Gus). A few things worried me with the window. Midfield has been a key strength in recent seasons and to not strengthen that is a big concern. Brighton loanee looks good. However Eccles, Sheaf are injury prone and sadly Allen has unexpected issues and Kelly does he absolute best but he is past it. You cannot rely on Palmer as well and who knows how Callum O'hare will be. Crying out for another energetic player like Allen.
I wasn't optimistic about Ellis Simms based on what I saw in Everton's final game last year and heard really fluctuating views on Wright from my very knowledgeable Danish friend.

At Hull. we looked overall a better squad but very lacking in in energetic midfielders and all 3 strikers employed were definitely below standard we aim to be at. It's pretty worrying. I said the same thing last year and had us down with the crazy early fixture schedule but we had two totally brilliant players. There have been some serious mistakes in the window in terms of pricing and balance. I know getting players these days is tricky. Just look at Preston though and them picking up Keane on a free and their season.

Seems a really wasteful window in terms of money wasted on unproven league 1 defenders/shear volume of defenders and sadly Robins has really messed up with forwards. I think most people still love Mark Robbins and still value him but he must be having some sleepless nights on decisions in the window . I obviously don't want things to go badly wrong this season or MR suffer after doing brilliantly for so long.

Sheaf, Eccles, and Kelly all spent 1 month+ on the sidelines last season and we’ve gone into the season with them as our only DM options & Eccles as our RWB cover.

FWIW, I think a lot of our signings will turn out good (Gyok & Hyam weren’t very good in their first championship season) but not signing another CM has left us dangerously short.

Wake up and smell the coffee. Mid table would always have been good this year. That was the case even before the injuries. We are in the same position as the League 2 season in terms of the development cycle just from a much higher starting point and where it is a lot more competitive. Lots of new players who need to be integrated

Buying players is always a lottery. Alex Fergusson bought Nick Powell and Phil Jones after all. Robins has had a fair few howlers but generally been ahead of the game.

apropos the twitter poll as to whether Robins should be sacked - I assume the 5% who do want to get rid of him either have severe mental health problems or are fans of other clubs who would be glad to have him

Even if we were relegated I'd stick with Robins

I agree. There was a discussion on Twitter earlier today who said Sakamoto may have been brought to cover that position but robins probably isn’t convinced now after seeing him a couple of times there that’s he’s best position.

I just worry the strategy is wrong. I can’t get over rather than £13m on Kitching and Wright we could have got 6 £2m players at GK, CB, 2 CMs and 2 STs and the squad would look infinitely healthier with infinitely less pressure on the signings and the team as a whole. No they wouldn’t have all come off but the chance of one providing excellent value outweighs that.

I thought that was the direction we were going in with all the other signings up to unveiling Wright for nearly £8m. I still look at that amount and can't quite believe, or maybe don't want to believe that we paid that as the base fee.

I’ve seen absolutely nothing so far to suggest he is £7.7m player or potential to be that quality. He looks like a 500k punt from a premier league development squad to me.

He looks like he plays best with balls over the top/through balls to chase and with Eccles and Kelly he's got no chance of getting those to be fair. Without Sheaf as well you just need Ayari in a deeper position to set those up.

With a glaas half full, what I have seen him do well is make runs and be on the shoulder of the last defender ready to attack the space in behind and the ball has never been played. Playing the ball to him the way we did with Vik will make him continue to look distinctly average.
