Love a bet on U23 - there tends to be a fair few goals across the whole league - although it is dangerous to bet on an outright winner as you never really know how many 1st team players are fielded

Ha ha - goalless! I’d better not quit my day job. I’m clearly no Dale Evans!

Interesting that Steveson started today, but wasn’t on bench on Saturday. Fallen down the pecking order quickly.

Farndon not happy:

Jason Farndon admitted that his strong Coventry City Under-23s side should have beaten Millwall at the Ricoh Arena.

The Sky Blues played out a disappointing goalless draw with the Lions despite fielding an experienced team with several players with first team minutes under their belts.

“We are definitely not happy with the performance,” said the development squad coach, reflecting on the game that included twins Dion and Devon Kelly-Evans playing as wing-backs, a back three of Dominic Hyam, Tom Davies and Chris Stokes, Ben Stevenson in midfield and Max Biamou leading the line up front.

“I felt the game was very slow and pedestrian and we didn’t quicken it up enough in the final third.

“We didn’t pose enough of a threat which is unlike us in the Under-23s where you don’t tend to get many nil, nils.

“We’re happy with the nil; I thought the back three defended really well. They didn’t have a lot to do but they stayed switched on and did things properly.”

He added: “It was a little bit different having more seniors than usual but we expect the same things and the gaffer was at the game so it was important they did well and it was a chance to get some minutes on the pitch. However, the team we put out we expected a victory.

“Millwall were very organised and came to frustrate us and I think they did. I don’t think we showed enough speed and bravery in the box.

“We had a good chat about it afterwards about being braver in and out of possession.”

As for the wing-backs system, Farndon believes it’s a formation that the first team and Under-23s can play comfortably if and when required.

“The 23s are always difficult because it depends what the manager wants to play in terms of giving first teamers minutes,” he said.

“We played with one up front and a little box behind but yes I think it is a system that can work.

FA Youth Cup first round tonight. Lincoln away at Sincil Park - they are a Category 3 team, one below us. These are the biggest games of the year for young players in a stadium under the lights. The U18s are in terrible form and so far have yet to pick up a positive result. The defence has been okay but at the other end we've only scored 3 goals in 9 games which isn't going to win you many games. Lincoln will definitely fancy their chances tonight as we are also without 2 key players I believe

Josh Eccles broke his leg against Palace last week in the 23s game so obviously won't be available. 2-3 months out.

7pm kick-off. Should be coverage from the clubs account.

Line-up tonight. 3 U16s involved. Jonathan Ngandu and Blaine Rowe starting with GK Cian Tyler on the bench

Looks like a 3-5-2(3-5-1-1) with Johnny in his favoured #10 position where he can get hold of the ball and do his thing. Second year key players Stedman, Eccles and McMahon all out injured.

Why are we playing three at the back at U23 and U18 when we don’t play it in the first team?

Terrific result from our young U18 side. What you have to remember is we are fielding 15 year olds against 17/18 year olds - two years is a huge gap in youth football. We play Accrington away in the second round

Is anyone making the trip to Accrington tonight. I’m half tempted to see a few of these highly rated U17/U16s

U16 CB Blaine Rowe played at RM. Very versatile - think he can play anywhere in defence and midfield. Got the assist for the second. Was part of England training camp last year with Charlie McCann.

Football is a funny old game, last years U18 side who were dominant went out in the first round to a club to a tenth tier and this years side who are bottom of the table are through to the third round beating two tough Category 3 sides.

U18s recorded their first 3 points of the season yesterday with a 2-0 win away at Cardiff. Jack Burroughs with both goals. 3 wins in 4 now.

Team was: Naylor, L.Green, White, Endall, Fixter, Doyle, L.Rowe, S.Green, Ngandu, Burroughs, Crowther

Jason Farndon is the new 23s coach replacing Nicky Eaden. Andy Crabtree is now in charge of the 18s.

Mick Halsall has been appointed Head of Coaching, he was at Walsall a few years back and was responsible for Troy Deeney, Scott Dann and Matty Fryatt. He replaces Tony Cook who left for a role at Crewe

U23s at home to Watford on Monday at the Higgs (1pm). Currently 3 points behind leaders QPR with a game in hand

Kyle Finn is a winger. Shame he's not yet quite pushing for a starting place in the first team. We could really do with a tricky winger to complement Jones on the other side.

Are Jak Hickman and Chris Camwell back from their loans then?

Jack Burroughs becomes the second 16-year-old to score for the U23s this season. Kyle Finn played as a false nine today with no other options, new position for him but got his goal.

Yeah, especially if the other clubs aren't full time. If they are part time they will come back here and train.

Full time in today’s U18 game.

Sky Blues 4-1 QPR.

S.Green, Burroughs (2) and White. 5 goals in last 3 games for 16-year-old Burroughs - including one for the 23s.
