The USA has a history of purchasing and annexing territory from other countries.
The last significant purchase was the Danish Virgin Isles in 1917.
That was a deal that saved the Danes money, a Greenland deal will cost the Danish state a lot of lost mineral wealth unless an arrangement about them can be concluded that benefits all parties.

Everyone’s got different situations/things to play for though. Canada has a load of natural resources and Carney has made tough calls like changing Canadas net zero policy because of situation with US. Does Canada/Carney care as much as we/Europe do about Ukraine etc ?

The EU previously cosied up to China and Russia and have been paying the price recently when trying to ween itself off the over reliance

We/europe have left ourselves exposed and appear to live in this ideological world rather than the real world. Finally we’re waking up a bit

A little bit unfair we live in a global world order and were acting in line with what the USA expected of us and trump has suddenly changed the agreeement
Has no one said 98% of your tariffs are paid by USA people or companies

Think that would be pretty catastrophic for all kinds of reasons

As others have said, if the United States no longer plans on being a reliable partner to its allies then smaller countries have to figure out how to decouple and scale up themselves. Won’t be easy or especially safe.

I read something a while ago that suggested that some in the the USA want it to lose its reserve currency status, can't remember the reason why

Mark Carney's done the right thing by Canada anyway. Who knows, maybe the EU can cosy up to China as well.

Problem is Canada has the raw materials, natural resources and agricultural products (that it is no longer selling to US) that China wants (or is no longer buying from US) - Europe doesn't have the same to offer.

I think the argument is that it's current status increases demand for the dollar, thus keeping its value higher than it would otherwise be on a trade-weighted basis. This causes the US to be disadvantaged in world trade.

It's the sort of thing that could cause a US President to introduce tariffs on imports

World would be a ‘better place’ if US took over Greenland, says Nigel Farage

Reform leader says he agrees ‘strategically’ with Trump but adds that views of Greenlanders must be respected

Iceland = Greenland?

if you still need convincing that he's just a mouthpiece for wealthy people and vested interests, here's a bit more proof that he doesn't really know where he is, who he's talking to, or what he's talking about.

Trump for sure has some sort of early dementia.

My Grandma would often going into long rambling rants at the start, before it took hold more and now she says very little.

I see that Leavitt has denied it actually happened even though it did.

Well you're wrong, the White House have said categorically he didn't say Iceland!

Earlier, we reported that Donald Trump appeared to confuse Greenland with Iceland during his speech in Davos, and – despite what we all heard – the White House is now steadfastly denying that there was a mix-up at all.
To elaborate on our earlier post, in one of several such mix-ups, Trump said:
They’re [Nato] not there for us on Iceland, that I can tell you, I mean our stock market took the first dip yesterday because of Iceland, so Iceland’s already cost us a lot of money.
Despite this fact, in response to a journalist highlighting Trump’s mix-ups on X, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt hit back with this denial:
No he didn’t, Libby. His written remarks referred to Greenland as a ‘piece of ice’ because that’s what it is. You’re the only one mixing anything up here.
Leavitt included a screenshot of a search for Greenland featuring a picture of a block of ice in the sea in front of some land.
