Yes, it dos need explaining.

Maduro and his government was illegitimate and he was a dictator. The regime is indefensible and Venezuelans appear to be rejoicing that he’s been toppled.

It’s also initially a strategic victory against China who is dependent on oil imports.

It's naked bully boy imperialism under false pretenses (curtailment of drug importation) and an attempt at distracting the folks from the stench of his Epstein island involvement.

Would you support other regional superpowers behaving in the same way? Putin is a dictator wouldn't you agree? Surely he represents more of a threat to the West so why hasn't there been an attempt at regime change there?

Human rights abuses the world over and on a far greater scale but you don't seem to be clamouring for the same action.

Is what China and Russia was doing not bully boy imperialism? They were propping up a regime friendly to them.

If we want to go down the whataboutisms we’d have to bring up China and Russia’s actions in Latin America and Africa.

The ‘international rule based order’ ironically only worked when the USA was hegemonic superpower. Now China and Russia are also dominant, they’re all competing aggressively in their national interests.

The USA securing Venezuelan oil reserves and out of China’s sphere is a huge win. Particularly, if you’re of the viewpoint that a conflict between the two is likely.

This is amazing.

They're obviously trying to recreate the Obama photos from the White House situation room during the Bin Laden operation.

Instead they've hung some tablecloths up in a dining room while Hegseth searches 'Venezuela' on X.

Remarkable.

Schrodinger's argument...

Simultaneously acknowledging the illegal actions of other states whilst applauding the illegal actions of another as they're on 'our side'.

Hurrah!

Trump was forced into doing this by the failure of his own economic policies. Isolating Canada means that he no longer has the access the US enjoyed to heavily discounted heavy crude oil from Canada that refineries in the southern states need as they’re not set up to refine light crude that the US has in its own oil and gas reserves. Russia, Canada and Venezuela sit on the biggest reserves of heavy crude in the world. So he’s de facto invaded Venezuela rather than admit the failure of economic policies. What a man. This is going to get far messier yet as China has specifically invested in refineries to deal with Venezuelas heavy crude. I can’t imagine china are going to take this sitting down. The president of peace everyone, not acting like a despot dictator invading countries at will.

It sounds like you’re talking tongue in cheek but when you look at what the US has historically imported from Canada then invading Greenland for minerals doesn’t sound that far fetched based on the events of yesterday. What next? Brazil for timber? He doesn’t exactly like Brazils government. Mexico for gypsum? Again doesn’t exactly like their government either. In reality unlikely as he’d never get enough of the rest of the world to turn a blind eye to it given they are true democracies but he’s clearly taken a leaf straight out the Putin playbook and been building a false narrative about Venezuela for a while now as a precursor to yesterday.

It’s only an ‘illegal’ action if Maduro is a legitimate leader of Venezuela. He’s not…

So it's legal for any country to sweep and bomb a country and kidnap random people?

Some US diplomat kills a British man, US bring them back, hide them behind "diplomatic law" and refuse to extradite them to face justice. But it's perfectly legal to bomb a country, raid it with 150 aircraft and kidnap someone because you want their oil.

It doesn't matter if he's legitimate or not, you can't just go around kidnapping people from another country.

That would be a more believable excuse if Trump hadn’t given Putin a hero’s welcome when Putin last flew into the US unopposed despite being a wanted war criminal.

Latest rumours are about numerous US military aircraft flying into the UK and the UAE cancelling some flights to Iran.

Is a strike on Theran imminent? Will Ayatolla Khamenei be enroute to a US carrier in the Gulf tonight.

Find out in tomorrow's episode of Team America, might is right.

Update: They might be air lifting Venezuelan gold reserves to the USA held by the BoE, just to verify it's value of course.

The distraction theory gets more and more ridiculous by the week. I’m pretty sure if Trump was that concerned about the Epstein files then he could find an easier diversion than abducting the president of Venezuela.

Yeah, not being entirely serious. He was charged in NY so that's a pretty simple answer to why he was taken there.

So they've removed Maduro, but left everyone else in place? What has that achieved exactly?

Trump was singing the praises of the VP that has stepped up to be president. But she's come out and called the US a bunch of dickheads

I see he's ruled out the Nobel prize-winning opposition leader from taking over and instead the USA will run the country instead.

How democratic.

I’m sure I read that they’ve said similar stuff about Colombia and Mexico as well. That’s before you take into account the financial backing given to ‘preferred candidates’ in other countries and threats to withdraw financial support if there man doesn’t get in power.
