EFL Clubs have today officially voted through proposals that will see the EFL transfer window close following the opening game of the League season.

Consultation with Clubs has been ongoing since last year and as a result of today’s vote, the window will now close for permanent transfers from another Club on Thursday 9th August 2018 at 5pm, which is aligned with the decision the Premier League opted to take in September 2017.

In addition, EFL Clubs will still be able to:

• Sign players on Standard Loan up to the 31st August 2018
• Sign players on Standard Loan up to 31st August 2018 with an option to agree a permanent transfer when the next window opens
• Register players who ceased to be registered with a Club during the period up until the 31st August 2018
• Transfer players OUT to a Club in any League whose window is still open

The EFL was under no obligation to make any changes and the Board adopted a neutral position on the matter ensuring that Clubs were provided with the appropriate information in order to fully consider the implications and come to a decision that benefitted their own individual transfer policies.

EFL Chief Executive Shaun Harvey said: “After discussing the options throughout the course of the last few months, I’m pleased that the matter has been determined by Clubs ahead of the start of next season.

“This new approach will give Clubs and managers the stability they crave earlier in the season whilst also providing the flexibility to add to their squads after the traditional deadline until the end of month if required.”

Today, Clubs supported the implementation of guidance on the following basis: ‘for any League match played on or after the 4thThursday in March (including Season 2017/18), any team sheet for a League game should include at least 10 outfield players who featured on the team sheet for the League match before.’

In the event any Club breaches the threshold, they may be charged with a breach of Regulation 24 and the matter will be referred to a Disciplinary Commission.

That annoys me that does, football league and FA have tried limiting changes before and then gone back on it (in cup games), I don’t see how they can dictate who teams pick?

Towards the end of the season say for a mid table team, if they use the maximum 5 loans, but it’s the last couple games of the season so they decide to play their youngsters and players out of contract (like MR did last year), to give them some game time and see if they can earn a contract, then clubs will be fined?
Teams can complain all they like about it affecting their status in the league and promotion chances etc etc... but it’s a 40+ game season.
Just my opinion but don’t think it’s fair to limit team changes

I don't think anyone should decide who a manager picks to play a game other than the manager themself. The league punishing a team for picking players the league has allowed them to register is a load of bollocks.

We haven't deliberately played a weakened team but I will bet there arent many times that we would meet that criteria.

I quite like this about the transfer deadline, but the loan window really needs looking at. I don't understand why they changed it.

What happens if they gave a load of injuries or sickness.


The whole loan system needs looking at the first thing I would stop is loaning players from the same league and players over 23 can’t be loaned out anywhere.

Initially loans between teams in same division were barred but altered by Premiership clubs, it’s a fiddle What better for let’s say Chelsea for example to loan a player to Crystal Palace to strengthen them but that player can’t play against Chelsea possibly making Palace weaker for that match. With the money in the Prem clubs in the premiership shouldn’t be allowed to loan in anyone at all with the possible exemption of goalkeepers

Scrap the entire loan system.

That way if Chelsea sign you, you are only going to play for Chelsea or sit your career out on a bench.

The players would then filter down the leagues as it used to be.

Of course they could play in some kind of Reserve team/combination league.
