Think they’re trying that aswell, you’re only allowed 8 players out on loan now. The idea is if can’t be loaned out it would make players think twice about joining these clubs

I've thought for a long time that only season long loans should be permitted (with no recall options). PL clubs hoarding players is just not good for the game in my opinion.

If that’s correct there must be some bargains to be had at Chelsea who have over 30 out on loan.

If someone’s buying Chelsea for £3 billion they will not just be handing out bargins… they will be wanting their money back where they can

Even when we played them in L1, you could tell they were a team that always tried to play a decent style of football (unlike a Rotherham). Amazed that Lewington is still going for them. 38 next month ! Fair play to him.

Yeah clocked he was playing v Sheff Wed, he's played well over 700 matches for them. Made his debut when they were called Wimbledon still.

He's looking a bit portly now

I think only players that are under 21 should be allowed to be loaned otherwise you get ridiculous situations like Drinkwater at Reading and players that Chelsea loan out year after year.

What do you do with a Walker or a Waghorn though? Or even a Jody Jones?

JJ is out of contract end of the season so there is one solution, Walker I think someone would take a punt on him considering he has shown what he can do in the past just needs the right guidance, Waghorn I suppose loaning out but we would still be paying a chunk of his wages

I meant if you restrict loans to U21s. All have/would/could benefit from a loan at an older age.
It’s not all Chelsea hoarding people in their mid twenties, even if I agree with the trust of the idea.

Agree with your points tho. Think Waghorn will be the hardest to shift.

Terrible idea.

If you're like us, who will start the summer with multiple players (most of which are on high contracts) that are likely to not play a part next season, how would you feasibly free up their wages? Equally, what happens if a player is unhappy and wants a move but the club can't afford to come to a mutual agreement?

Bringing that kind of law in would be a massive hinderance for both clubs and players.

First season for him - I think he still could step up next season, although @better days seemed to suggest he would be happy to move on next season (iirc?)

It is the only way to stop them hoarding players which will then bring the wages down.

I’m more talking prem players down than anything else but if you loan to the same league the players should be able to play against parent teams.

It really isn't. Nor will it bring wages down.

You do realise there's new regulations which state clubs can no longer send more than eight players out on loan in any given season.

That's automatically going to put a grinding halt to Chelsea's ridiculous loan model.

How would you suggest to stop the hoarding as there are players at Chelsea (a soft target) that have never been near the first team and I guess other clubs the same.

Squad size limits.

25 first team.
25 U23
25 U18

You want more you have to sell/release.

Scrap the loan system completely.

You think it's a much bigger problem than it is.

Chelsea's model is already backfiring on them. You just have to look at the fact that more youth players are now refusing new contracts to prove that. The departures of Lewis Bate, Myles Peart-Harris and Tino Livramento are recent examples of this.

I look at Sambou if he had stopped with us and played in the first team would he have ended up like Callum Wilson equally he could have been a Shaun Jeffers.

I think it’s better to get the youngsters playing rather than their potential loan spot taken up by someone like Drinkwater. So limiting the numbers of older ones may get the younger ones out to play.

Exactly the arguement is completely mute so there's no point making it.

You're making it sound like they're forced to go. Players like Sambou have their own free will you can't prohibit these players getting a move which really is a life changing opportunity for them.

But that's football, clubs have to remain competitive. Bringing a rule in like that could potentially cause the quality of English football to regress as it would make the prospect of playing in England hazardously uncertain. You're not seeing the bigger picture here.

Nope, but they are in the single market & schengen zone so have freedom of movement. Leaving the EU has meant that market is now more restricted. Wouldn't apply to Ostigard anyway as has settled status.

I don't think it does stop hoarding, because they'll still have the incentive to bring in as many youngsters as possible because they can still loan them out and either a. get a first team player b. sell them for a tidy sum because they've played for Chelsea/Man City etc.

No-one really signs older players (except goalies) with the intention of loaning them out as it's a waste of everyone's time and money. With older players, the teams loaning them would be getting a finished product, the player gets games and the parent club free up some wages.

With young players team tend to get raw or unfinished products that they knock the edges off for the benefit of the parent club. All those Chelsea loanees have probably got more development from other clubs they've been on loan at than Chelsea, yet Chelsea would be the ones to receive a development fee if they moved on. Possibly along with loan fees paid by the loaning club. Really not a fair system and it's the young players being loaned out that is the problem and needs to be restricted, by making it so they are more likely to end up contracted to a 'lesser' club who would then benefit from their development.

I think there's a few things that would be more effective than banning loans for over-21;s
1. Loans out capped (as seems to be being discussed)
2. Squad limits so excess U21 players etc. have to be released
3. You cannot get any type of transfer/development/sell-on fee for any player over 21 who does not make a first team appearance during the previous season (unless mitigating circumstances like serious injury)

The Paterson part was incorrect. We got Bright, Paterson was out of a club for a while, he then went to Middlesboro on trial and then eventually went to Swansea but Bright was signed long before then

Paterson one still disappoints me, always has a blinder against us. Even Luke Steele was posting saying well done on joining CCFC

Twine would have been great but I never heard much about it until now.

I've always liked what I've seen of Todd Cantwell who didn't even get into his loan club Bournemouth's match day squad yesterday. I seem to remember that he was very complimentary about the City after we'd played Norwich, his parent club, last year too. Would probably command a decent fee but if we have to unload one or two of our big three/four then in my humble opinion he might be a decent investment for us.

Not convinced.

Think he could have a bit of a Bertie Big Bollocks attitude here and fee/wages would be very high.

He definitely gives that impression but I was surprised when I heard an interview with him how grounded he appeared to be. It's also been a while since we had someone who is able to wind up the opposition on the pitch.I wholeheartedly agree that his wage demands would probably be out of our range however.
