He may get a couple of goals tomorrow with his feet up on the couch watching the telly!

Fair play to FL and the coaching team.

Probably the best example of a different manager getting more out of an already decent player.

I really like Torp, good player, good demeanour.

Probably not but I still think he will do well.

At the start of the season I thought that, if he stayed fit, he would probably score ten goals. I now reckon he could get fifteen, which would be great for a midfielder.

I've never quite understood this one, actually seen it quite a bit, people using 'overperforming xG' almost in a bad way. Like a way of making the stats say scoring absolutely bangers is a bad thing.

It's not that. It's more that over performing xG over shorter periods can simply just be down to complete pot luck or a player going through a freak spell.

I wouldn't expect him to keep up at this rate, if he does he'll be off to Real Madrid in January but i'm not seeing pot luck with Torp. The bloke has incredible technique. Pretty sure he was on a pretty decent run end of last season before Pompey crocked him too.

i wonder if Torp is the closest in style to how Lampard played?

Yes, he’s not going to be posting that kind of overperformance but you’d expect he will get at least a couple more free kicks and long-range goals throughout the season, which by their nature are low xG chances.

There's similarities. Whilst he's got a long way to go to get near FLs career, you can definitely see the FL influence in him. I get the feeling that Lampard sees Torp a little like a version of his younger self and is coaching him to that affect.

I think it's noticeable to see Torp arriving into the box for pull backs like Lampard used to do, much more in these few games than he did last season.

We’ve played 4 games and he’s scored 2 absolute worldies (free kick vs Oxford and the 7th vs QPR). He’s obviously not going to bang 20+ goals in the top bins from 30 yards is he lol

Might be me you're on about. Never wanted him sold. You could see he was a great footballer from day one, but I'd have understood the club looking at his fitness record and inconsistent output and deciding they could get more value and output from someone else.

If he performs to current levels or close and is fit for 90% of games, he'll be the player he looked like he could be on day one and we'll be less reliant on Rudoni. His story here so far has been purple patches then getting injured or dropped, hope that's over.

I was one of these.... thought he'd be dining out on the non-goal against United. Different animal under Lampard. fast turning into one of our key performers.

He's jsut got to keep his fitness up.

Last season I could see your point. But some were saying they'd be looking to upgrade him during the Hull game!

aah see - I wasn't that bad. Understood the need to play him instead of Sheaf that game. He's got that killer pass in him. Last season though, especially under Robins i just couldn't see what he offered other than a worldie goal now and then.

Yeah, obviously it's highly unlikely he'll keep scoring at this rate. Also I don't think it's pot luck either I'm more highlighting the issue of using XG as a measurement over a short period of time. It genuinely can be a freak run or it can be the player is just a lethal finisher.

With Torp, on top of his ability as a dead ball specialist, his end product is very good so if he gets into a goalscoring position I fully back him to put chances away. So if he continues to get into those positions I would expect him to score more goals across the season and potentially become a real outlet for us this season from midfield.

Morgan Whittaker is a great case study of that. xG of 11.3 over the course of the 2023/24 season at Plymouth and ended with 20 goals - since that season he’s scored 4 goals, and still yet to score for Middlesbrough in his first 20 games.

It's not a bad thing, people need to recognise that it is sustainable for so long. If we can get him chances in the box (like the Man U goal that was chalked off), we'll have a midfielder who will be amongst the top scorers in his position and this is exactly what we need.

If we can keep him, Wright , Rudoni and Grimes fit we will get promoted in my opinion

And people wanted Sheaf to play in place of Torp

Probably the same people who rate Simms

Good job we have a manager who can judge a player.

Really hoping he stays fit as I think he'll have an incredible season. He's got everything

Will need to rotate with Eccles during 3-game weeks as he does tend to tire & the whole team looks worse

I am surprised so many people didn't rate him previously. There have been some questions, rightly or wrongly, on his physicality and defensive work before, but I always thought going forwards he offered something most of our other midfielders don't have. I personally would not be surprised if he does continue to keep scoring and getting assists.

Maybe it will slow down a bit, but his ability to pick a final pass, and shoot with such accuracy is not an accident.

I’m not surprised at this at all. It measures what he is good at. But we’re 4 games in. He’s scored some good goals which he has the technique to do. But he still goes missing in games, especially late on. His overall contribution in his position needs to be all over the pitch for 90 minutes.
