Tony Mowbray and how we got lucky! (1 Viewer)

With him walking away...

Nearly three years have passed since Tony Mowbray thankfully walked away from our club.
We've had a roller coaster ride in that time, his 10 game winless run that lasted until late September was our lowest ebb, then along came Slade to punish us some more as a fanbase.

What we seen with Mowbray was pathetic transfer windows, confusing team selections, no plan B, but he was good at talking, his only selling point.

Fast forward until today and it seems Tony hasn't learned anything from his time at CCFC, nor has Waggott or Venus, these people really are the doom and gloom of management. To employ these people you shouldn't have any expectations above bottom half.

Unfortunately the Blackburn fans are finding out exactly how crap these people operate, I feel sorry for them.

Godden 15 goals by Christmas.
Godden sold for £2m in January.
New manager doesn't rate Armstrong.
We sign Armstrong for £1m.
We swap league places with Blackburn.

Mowbray's one of those who looks like they have the ability but never seem to actually get the job done, eg he failed as Celtic manager. Shows how important it is to keep a good season going after January.

Having said all that, Blackburn fans have unrealistic ambition. They are basically a second division club that had a spell in the top flight off the back of a very wealthy benefactor, why they think 12k average gates deserve better is beyond me.

Thing is with Mowbray, it all started so well. I remember at the time a fan from another club (Celtic, maybe) came on here telling us exactly what to expect second half of the season. And they nailed it. We totally capitulated. Some of the transfers we signed in that January window still boggle the mind, then wasting the next summer window chasing after targets that had no intention of signing, and not having any plans for when the inevitable happened. I really thought it might have been different, the way we started that season Armstrong was here.

Some being harsh on Mowbray. He kept us up when he first came in on the last day of the season. He then over achieved the first 1\2 of the following season by getting us in and around the play offs playing excellent football before we tailed off and finished probably a bit higher than where we should off. When we were 1 down at Crawley people would of been more than happy with a top 10 finish the following season in the same division. Yes he bolloxed up the summer transfer window and was right to leave but after years of dross he bought enjoyment and hope back into the club.

He has joined a long list of journeymen managers who make you wonder how do they keep getting managers jobs, always start okay but never lasts. Likely to lose his Blackburn job anytime soon but will get another and then employ the same inadequate assistants who are never any threat to his position.

Hahah not sure of the point of this thread but this is bullshit. Best chance of promotion to the championship in years and he fucked it up with shit transfers. Literally as simple as that

I think Waggott had more of an influence in transfers than people think and had a habit of playing ‘football manager’. Lots on here called him a Football Man (whatever that means), but actually his background was as a teacher and in further education. Think he got a little carried away with his role and involvement in professional football.

Pressley and Mowbray probably went along with it as he was the CEO, so accountable to him and there were no owners in sight to challenge that status quo.

Fast forward to Blackburn and it’s a similar set up, absent owners, same two people who are probably reliant on each other to stay in the job. Waggot will be far more involved in the football side than most CEOs I have no doubt, whilst Mowbray is pretty much a yes man.

See comment above ref. Waggott. One thing Robins said when he came back was about no scouting structure. Who do people think were unearthing gems like Denzel Slager - the manager? I am sure it was Waggott driving player recruitment

If Godden is on 15 by christmas I'd much rather keep him. To then shoehorn an unfit and out of form Armstong in to the team mid promotion push.
I'd take Arma, but in the summer, give him a full pre season. Not mid season in place of Godden.

Mowbray should've been sacked in Feb/March 2016 as he was on one of the worst runs in the League at the time and if we were bottom half of the table he would've gone.

A new manager would've given the team the natural boost in permance to impress and could've kickstarted our top 6 push

He's got a 45 % win ratio at Blackburn that includes a full championship season too.

They've had an indifferent start to the season no doubt but the championship is a big money division now and is getting harder.

I liked mowbray, enjoyed watching his brand of football and finished 8th in his only full season here...

Let's also remember they are in a division with teams that regularly get 24/25000 gates with big revenue, besides the odd one or two teams that are ran extremely well what do Blackburn fans expect?

Hindsight is a wonderful thing, but many on here (myself included I'll say) would have removed Robins after Shrewsbury last Christmas when we looked so inept and without an idea how to turn it around, having had 8 straight defeats. Thankfully they didn't react and I'm happy to admit that I was wrong. Mowbray is a decent manager and a good bloke too, I think he will do ok, but perhaps the level of expectation without a competitive budget needs tempering.

His time here was possibly in part poor signings, but we lost the pace of Kent at Christmas (he was inconsistent, but still carried a threat), Murphys goals dried up - people having a regular go at him for not working back perhaps took its toll on a young player and Madders was certainly not the same player after being loaned back (we all craved for it to be part of the deal, but it didn't work for whatever reason). Those were key reasons imo as to why we fell away so badly.

Overall surely he's done a really good job at Blackburn leading them to promotion in his first season when the club had previously been nose-diving with several managers in a short period and relegated to league 1 until Mobray arrival. Blackburn finished Mid-table last season and are looking the same this season with the budget he has to work with -

He gave us 4-5 months of some of the best, most dominant football I've seen in my lifetime, going to the Ricoh went from being a chore to actually enjoyable, we played teams of the park and expected 3 points at home every week.

What happened after was excruciating and shouldn't have been allowed to go on for so long, the decision should have been taken out of his hands.

He will be remembered fondly by me though for that half a season of goodness.

Just look at how many of the players we started the season with are playing regularly in the Championship and Prem and look at where his January recruits are. Majorly ballsed that opportunity up, I'm sure we were 10 points clear of 3rd at one point. Then he compounded it by having the worst summer window I can ever remember.

We should've been promoted that season and he massively bottled it. A front four of Prem/Champ level players and he shoehorned Marc-Antoine Fortune, Darius Henderson and Marcus Tudgay into it.

He knew it was coming and as a result, tinkered with the team far too often. It got to a stage where he forgot what actually got us getting results in the first place. We had a fearless front line full of technical ability. Armstrong, Maddison, Murphy, Kent, O’brien and Lamerais was more than enough fire power to take us up. Why this ever resulted in Stephen Hunt, Joe Cole, Tudgay and Fortune getting games I’ll never know. The team that ended the season was the total opposite of the team that started it.

I said it at the time, he should’ve been sacked in February and the new manager bounce might have been enough to see us up.
