Thousands of Coventry fans set to boycott clash against Bristol City
Thursday, August 08, 2013
THOUSANDS of Coventry City fans will vote with their feet and boycott their team's opening home game of the season against Bristol City at Northampton Town's Sixfields Stadium this Sunday.
Crisis-club Coventry have done a deal to play their home fixtures 34 miles away in Northampton for the next three seasons, after club owners Sisu fell out with ACL, the company that owns the Ricoh Arena, over unpaid rent.
But more than 15,000 angry fans have signed a petition protesting against the decision to play outside of Coventry and they are set to stay away.
And so far, just 400 or so Sky Blues supporters have purchased tickets for Sunday's game against City.
As of last night, Robins supporters had snapped up 408 tickets and they could even end up outnumbering 'home' fans.
In a bizarre twist, more than 10,000 Sky Blues supporters are expected to turn up at the Ricoh Arena to watch a Coventry legends side play a Midlands XI in a charity match on the same day.
The Ricoh match has been organised by the Coventry City Former Players Association and deputy chairman Billy Bell said: "We want the 15,000-plus people who signed a petition to keep Coventry City in Coventry to come along and support this charity match.
"People will vote with their feet by coming here rather than going to Northampton.
"The people of Coventry are aggrieved at what has happened to their club."
Meanwhile, Bristol City winger Albert Adomah, pictured, is set to complete his transfer to Middlesbrough today.
The Ghana international agreed terms with the Championship club and passed a medical at the Riverside on Tuesday, and the deal was expected to be confirmed yesterday.
But a delay in completing the paperwork means the deal has still to be ratified by the Football League.
City have agreed a fee of £1 million with Boro, and Adomah is expected to make his debut against Charlton Athletic at The Valley on Saturday.
Robins head coach Sean O'Driscoll is expected to be given cash from the sale of Adomah and Steven Davies, who joined Blackpool last month, to fund the signing of a new striker.
