It doesn't give the date when he was charged but I doubt it was within the last couple of days. It seems to me it was earlier than that, especially given that his lawyer has been given opportunity to make a statement denying his guilt.

In fairness to him, innocent until proven guilty.

In my experience it’s highly likely he would have been charged this week. It is generally common practice to give a month for a first appearance at a magistrates court if you’re not applying for a remand in custody.

Not sure if it worrks like this but maybe they knew he was leaving and going abroad so charging him gave them more power in terms of securing his return
