Hope it's not a sign of things to come but Root is developing a knack for making bad calls after winning the toss.
problem is aren't many young top-order batsmen scoring sufficient runs atm to warrant a call-up unless they take a punt on someone like Clarke or Pope (another keeper batsmen batting around 6 or 7)Interesting chat on TMS. A lot of the top order are 'names' such as Cook, Root, Stokes who are seen as un-droppable but the top order has been failing for a long time.
Is it time to make wholesale changes and put in younger players who are scoring at county level and say they've got 5-10 games to adjust to test cricket?
Lets face it, couldn't get much worse.
Packing the middle order with one-day players is never the answer.
That's the problem - no-one's claimed the 3rd pace spot with the view to being Anderson's successor. Been what 6 or 7 candidates in last couple or so years - Finn, Ball, T R-J, Woakes, Wood, Curran, Overton.I really fear for our bowling attack once Anderson and Broad depart, somebody is going to have to hit the ground running ASAP!

Old story English county cricket not conducive to producing express quicks - number of games, types of wickets etc. 80 odd mph isn't going to cut it at Test Level unless you can swing the ball or have great control.
That’s the concern with the other youngsters coming through Porter and Coad haven’t got out and out pace.
Helm I watched last night for Middlesex quick but a bit erratic, Stone may be a dark horse even in div 2 for Warwickshire
It's this issue of where out & out pace may not be the best option for home series but is usually an asset for away series. That’s the concern with the other youngsters coming through Porter and Coad haven’t got out and out pace.

just getting sloppy now.mixed bag.
some decent bowling, some just too short.
some missed chances/drops.
But it is obviously not a terrible pitch to bat on and underlines how brainless 1st innings batting was (although full credit to Pakistan bowlers who bowled with good discipline and to a team plan)
