You remember us playing one up front because we’ve got no one else, blooding kids who are nowhere ready, putting two keepers on the bench, making no subs and injuring players because we are using the bench as a nursery and having our squad fall down the league because they’ve played more minutes than anyone else in the division I assume?

You see what he's saying though, it's not a small squad, it's just not really up to scratch when we have even a small amount of injuries. It's a very tough balancing act on a budget though, do you have say 8 players who all have a high probability of being shite or say 4 that have a higher probability of being useful. I'd go for the latter.

Yes, but my thought process isn’t so much that the squad is too small in terms of quantity, but severely lacking depth from a quality perspective. That’s the crux of why changes aren’t made sooner in games (well, that and MR clearly hates subs).

By my reckoning, we have 29 first team players on the books (ignoring the fact that some are currently loaned out and 2 of those are loaned in). When the end of the season comes, we’ll have 3 out of contract and 2 returning to their parent clubs. 24 players. Now my gut feel is that the proposed 8 outgoing will include the out of contract players, but let’s assume not for a second. 8 out and 4 in would see 20 able and competitive players which is a little on the light side but then you’ve got Howley, Tavares, etc filling the squad out to around 24.

Any ideas on who this young striker who has already performed at Championship level could be?

The squad isn't that small, its once you get past the first 14 or so, the quality of those players falls of a cliff. Getting rid of 8 players who have no chance of even making the bench, to be replaced by two first team players is a massive improvement in not only quality but squad depth. Unless the first team bus gets hit by a rogue Russian missile, the likes of Da Costa, Hilssner, Pask have absolutely zero chance of playing.

I don’t think SBB is saying we have one lined up, just that’s likely who we will target

But if you take out those like Hillsner, Dacosta, Walker, Pask who should be members of the first team squad but are nowhere near and replace them with two who actually are then overall we've gained because we've now got 2 players who will be able to come in rather than 4 who the manager won't use.

Similarly with Shipley and jones who hang around the squad but have been used sparingly and are either not picked or tend to perform poorly. Replace those two with a single player and arguably we've gained overall by having a competent squad player the manager is willing to use.

This does of course assume that almost everyone we sign will succeed, which is probably not going to be the case.

We’re going to lose two first team players in JCS and Maatsen, and sounds like selling another. That’s 3 signings to get where we are: 5/6 short of a basic squad. 3 out 4 in will make little to no difference to our issues and assumes we hit the mark with every signing. Big ask.

you are assuming we can get these of the wage bill entirely - in the case of the biggest earners who really are unlikely to gesture much Kelly Walker and waghorn are it seems earning £30,000 a week between them. Even hillsner it seems gets £4,000 a week

it’s optimistic we will get those wages out entirely - more likely at best half will be covered

Someone like Morgan Rogers on loan from City would make a lot of sense. Great season at Lincoln but struggled at Bournemouth.

We will never get 100% covered normally 50 to 75% by getting Waghorn and Walker out on loan for example ,this does bring in a good return unlike previous seasons when trying to get players out we got next to nothing back

Waghorn was actually a massive help for Vik early in the season. Since his injury lay off and then Covid he’s looked extremely off the pace so I’d be looking to offload him. He’s not been the complete disaster others have made out to be honest.

It is an assumption (and a big one) but the argument was that we'd be worse off if these left and we bought in half the number of players because our small squad would be even smaller. I was just pointing out that as these lot never play anyway and are unavailable because they're out on loan any number of players in ahead of them that would be considered for first team duties is in real terms a bigger squad

And who's to say we won't loan others in to replace JCS and Maatsen?

I have a feeling next year we may have a few more loans in than this in order to be able to sign better quality permanently. Not ideal, but a better option than a really small squad and no loanees.

You can make an argument that Waghorn's signing is the difference between us making and not making the playoffs this season. He's been an albatross, and apparently will be next season as well. If that's not a disaster, what is?

SBB seemed to be mentioning loans in the four. I don’t care how we get players in but we need 6/7 minimum who can play first team.

Never really saw it even at the beginning. Let's face it he's been a disastrous signing. One goal all season. Walker who has been poor got two in two games. I think fans have been remarkably lenient on this guy compared with some other players.

yes, waghorn looked decent when he wasn’t coming off a knock. sometimes these transfers don’t pan out either. simon moore is an example of when it’s worked out, JCS also.

I thought that Waghorn had looked slow in his last season at Derby, but his distribution was very good. It may be a case of him adjusting to a new role.
I'm hoping that with a full pre-season he can regain some of the form from earlier in his career.

The idea that a 32 year-old Martyn Waghorn is suddenly going to start rolling back the years after a season where he scored one goal and could barely stay fit is just adorable.

If we don't sell vik and get rid of 1 other striker still think we won't need a new striker in as we play the box system in 50%of the games and are still attractive to watch and would prefer the budget to be spent on defence and midfield options as that wilL make us stronger for next season no matter whether the premier League or championship.

I believe 1 if not 2 of the big 3 will gone come summer, Hamer is definitely creating interest with a valuation probably already met. If we can fight off interest in the other two then great, but I think the money offered will be very tempting for the owners and maybe too difficult for them to turn down.

However I don't think MR would allow 2 to go without a fight or an agreement with the owners on the constinacy plan. i'm sure he would remind the owners of what effect it would have for the club going forward if deals were done without the correct reinvestment. He and Boddy seem to have a different opinion on valuation and I think will have completely different ideas on how easy is it to find a replacement that are the same quality or better. If we lose Hamer or Vik MR must get a large % of any fee generated to improve the facilities and squad which is needed. Most fans would understand and some would except the decision to sell if the outcome was improvement in quality of depth and ability to attract better players with facility upgrades.

Others have to be moved on to improve the quality of the group, it will be tough but we need to lose at least 7 that are not good enough or will never be good enough to compete to keep us at top end of the championship. These will not feature in MR plans and are just taking up a combined wage that can be used to bring in the quality needed to achieve MR target. We will not be able to bring in the same amount but we have to hope at least 5 quality signings and 1 or 2 of the younger group step up and Join Eccles & Tavares in making an impact in the 1st team.

I haven't heard any names of potential signings but I would happily take Troy Parrott, Cam Archer or Nathan Broadhead on loan or with a view to sign. George McEchran is another that has a good background that would suit us. One thing is for sure we are becoming a very good option for some big clubs and players alike to come and develop in an environment that is producing some very good players in a team encouraged to play the right way.

Only as long as Vik remains fit throughout! It's amazing someone in his position where you always likely to get kicked or receive a head injury has not only been available throughout, but also played the full game in nearly every match. Not sure we could rely on the same happening next season, and it would be remiss of MR not to plan for that eventuality.

Mostly frees would be brilliant as long à improve the squadand think we will be quite a draw for out of contract players to come and make the final step if we remain at championship level.
And it looks like from robins remarks they are looking at the home market which is more expensive according to what I have read.

You don't think in waghorn, godden and walker we have enough back up I know the argument coming in waghorn and walker still have to perform to the same level as Viktor,I do think for both players it will be last chance saloon next season and godden will be ahead of them.

Looking at the soon to be relegated teams, I wouldn’t mind looking at Woodrow and/or Carlton Morris from Barnsley. Morris would be a good vik replacement/understudy and Robins has been a long time admirer of woodrow.

I thought you were setting out a scenario if we lost one of our forwards? Even so I don't think we can expect much from Waghorn or Walker next season, although it would be a bonus if either could put this season behind them, and perform as we had hoped they might when they were signed.

I really hope we can hold onto all three, but fear we will lose Hamer, but clubs could make serious offers for all three, plus Sheaf who currently doesn't seem to be talked about.
The valuation of any of our players needs to be considered, as hopefully, we are not in the dire financial state of previous years when we'd sell anything that we had an offer for.
If we lost 2 or 3 of those key players, then I worry that we could be duplicating a Barnsley next season.
MR needs support from SISU and us......can we sell more that 10k season tickets again, which will be bought given the economic situation for people with inflation and fuel costs, etc.

Assuming Wikipedia is correct the most goals he’s managed in the league anywhere is 8. Is he any better than Walker who was a prolific League 1 and 2 scorer?

I mentioned this one last season and I'm sure you'll have the stats but I'd be looking to bring in Ayoub Assal as quickly as possible for the midfield. His club could well be a league 2 club come the summer and someone is gonna pick up a bargain.

He's not especially prolific but his skillset would be a good fit for our style imo. Plays a lot of games from wide rather than through the middle too.
