Is true - but cycle lanes do cause congestion and pollution ( see London LTN) as they restrict road space then when the cyclist don’t use the cycle lanes it gets worse and is also dangerous

My 65 year old mother who lives in Cornwall and has never driven, apoplectic with rage about how the ULEZ scheme is a personal attack on honest people like her.

Seriiusly? If there’s dedicated infrastructure cyclists should piss off frankly. I know it’s optional but this is a bloody good cycle Lane not some shitty painted thing

Have you got any evidence for this? Everything I’ve seen says the opposite.

Was reading something the other day about how they’ve been cultivating outrage. Apparently the anti protesters demanded cameras because “what about emergency vehicles?” Then started saying it was big brother because of all the cameras.

Saw the fines compared to Paris or other ULEZ zones and frankly it’s absolutely nothing in comparison.

Goes back to the NIMBY stuff that I posted about earlier. People whine like hell before something happens then when it does everyone’s fine.

Just the stuff I read about Khan , one of my friends lives on the edge of the new ULEZ area which is basically countryside - pollution levels in the routes that the traffic has been kettled into by the LTNs have gone up ( papertalk) but for example As the roads have been narrowed to make cycle lanes in Brighton the pollution has gone up as the average speed has dropped - it’s a mix of the two subjects I know but I have seen the cyclists not using the cycle lanes which could be two way and dangerous for Pedestrians

They do in the immediate term I'm sure as there's the same number of cars in less space.

But the idea is to encourage people disposed to cycling to do so as it's less lethal / force drivers to find another way as it's too inconvenient to drive, so in the medium / long term it ought to reduce car usage.

However as this is the annoying things thread... getting out of C&NW cricket ground is a challenge. The cycle lane is not obviously two directions when you exit, and you're focussing on the road as it's a bit like a pavement so you assume things will be coming at you slower. Yes, it's my responsibility, but a bit of heavy duty signing / warning until people get used to the concept would be useful. A couple of times I've driven out and across and only then realised I hadn't checked to my left if a cyclist was coming - good job they weren't!

I dunno man. Sounds like a lot of anecdotal evidence to me.

At the end of the day you either put cyclists on the pavement, the road, or their own infrastructure. And the more electric mobility stuff we get the more of an issue it’ll become.

I just find it funny me driving around on infrastructure the taxpayer pays for that pollutes and costs loads and is hugely inefficient (1 person per massive box usually) and that takes up huge amounts of public space in free parking, that’s fine. Me cycling around on cheap, smaller, less instructive infra that doesn’t pollute and actually saves the NHS money, that’s selfish and terrible and must be stopped.

It’s an interesting mindset we have. I think the explosion of car growth over the last 50 years makes some of the 1950s open road drive to freedom stuff look a little silly and nostalgic.

It’s partly that, but pollution is massively impacted by accelerating and braking. For example in theory a 20mph zone should produce more pollution than a 30mph zone but because it smooths out driving patterns it actually doesn’t. Moving from residential roads to properly built highways should actually improve pollution.

It just blows my mind that this is treated as some mad lefty climate fascist thing when they’ve been closing rat runs as long as I’ve been alive. The Riddings in Earlsdon where I grew up was one when I was little. They put bollards in one end to stop it. There were no mass protests.

Is that the Old Shoreham Road in Hove that you’re on about? If so, it’s long been backed up due to the poor road layout. In reality, Brighton has had a lot of pollution for years now as it’s a highly populated compact city with too many cars/people.

Everywhere has too many cars. The infrastructure just wasn’t built for every adult to have one. We aren’t America. Just as people have with houses as households break down I think people might have to manage their mobility expectations.

What I can’t get my head around is my 13 year old daughter who thinks 15 mums walk to school is “effort” but won’t use a bike to cut it to 5 mins because “cringe”

I was going to that but can't make it anymore. Was meant to be in Cov for a mate's BBQ but it's been cancelled so I'll stay local and take in some North West Counties Premier Division instead.

You can add that shitshow to the thread as it goes. Off to Lille in a month watch England v Samoa, a lot less excited than when I bought the tickets a year ago. Doesn't help that one of the guys I'm going with is a Scotland fan.

Electric bikes
Electric scooters

When they are both ridden on the roads by pricks who stink of weed and have no road sense.

Neighbour dumping his garden waste into our green bin because we paid for a permit and he hasn’t.

Also the smell of weed coming in through the window which is open because it’s hot.

I worked from home today and it was awful, been in the office this week otherwise which is air conditioned bliss. I'd never wish away nice weather but have to say the current heat feels particularly oppressive.
