Why do we call Napoli Naples then?

I'm just pointing out it's suddenly been changed to its correct pronunciation by Ukranians since the war broke out. It's a translation, not an English word.

The reason is Kyiv and not Kiev is because Kiev is the Russian not the Ukrainian name for it.

The term ‘the Ukraine’ is also a Russian one referring to it as a territory not a sovereign state.

I think so. Do think people are trying desperately hard to like him, just so they can say they’re different.

The issue is whether it is polite and proper to call something/someone by the name that they would prefer to be known by, and it is very much a hangover from colonialism and having an empire that we (the British) are worse than most at giving something a name that is easier for us to pronounce. If anyone remembers the book/TV drama "Roots" by Alex Haley, you will recall Kunta Kinte being renamed "George" by his "masters".
OK, that is an extreme example, but if you ask someone their name, then think "Gosh that's a tad tricky to pronounce - i'll call them Giles instead", it is the height of rudeness, in my book.
Trouble is, if you say to someone "We're off for a weekend break to Italy soon". "Oh, that's nice - where are you going". "Firenze". "Knob!".

Try getting a Frenchman to call London anything other than Londres! They now spell Putin "Poutine" so that it is pronounced correctly.

The people on football commentaries/analysis who use the term "one v one". Fucking HATE it, especially in a Manc accent! It's a one-ON-one you twats!
Oh and what is it with the use of the word "group" in place of team or squad? They need to look up the definitions of team and group (i.e. a disparate assembly of individuals with no sense of cohesion or collective plan - so perfect for England!).

What's the point ? They tell you when they pull out the bloody ball anyway.

Insurance companies. LV insurance specifically.

I slipped in the shower in May and put my knee through the bathtub. Checked and it was covered by my buildings insurance so made a claim which was approved.

They sent out a company called Gallagher Bassett who sent a young lad over to fit the replacement bath as repair wasn’t possible. This was a Friday and he left the bath half full of water saying to leave it overnight and drain in the morning.

Saturday morning I go to the bathroom and the bath is empty. Weird I think and go downstairs to make a cuppa, where I find water dripping from the ceiling on the kitchen.

I call LV and they send me £40 compensation and tell me someone more senior and more competent will be out Monday morning to resolve. Monday morning the same kid comes out and refits the bath, does a terrible job with the finish but I think sod it at least it’s fixed.

Until my GF takes a shower and water starts coming out the ceiling again. I call again and again they promise to come out and resolve, new guy from Gallagher Bassett this time seems better, seems to have fixed it and once the ceiling is dry they send out a painter who takes one look and says it needs replastering first.

Plasterer comes out from GB and leaves my kitchen covered in plaster but at least fixes the ceiling. Then painters come over and leave while I’m on a work call. I go in to find that they’ve bodged the job: used the wrong shade of paint, have just roughly painted around bits and not properly covered the water marks in the ceiling. And again flecks of paint all over my kitchen. Sod it I think, as long as the bath is fixed and I wanted to repaint the kitchen anyway.

A week later the leak reappears. I call LV and tell them I’m done, they need to send someone competent out and while they’re at it they can repaint my kitchen properly. Another GB employee comes out, claims it’s the sealant that’s the issue and paints a small patch of wall the correct colour and says he’ll have to wait to do the ceiling as it’s damp.

Another couple of weeks and the leak appears again so I call LV and GB and say frankly I’ve lost all confidence and I want a new contractor and I want everything they’ve done wrong fixed including the newly squeaky floorboards in the bathroom, the now not working extractor fan, the mould problem that’s appeared in my kitchen cupboard, the lot. I’m done.

They agree to send a loss adjuster and a specialist leak company out. I agree. Loss adjuster comes out and is shocked at how bad a job they’ve done and tells me the leak company will be in touch.

Just had a call from the leak company asking for £350 excess. I laugh and say no and call LV who initially claim that’s my excess for water damage. I laugh again and say they’ve caused the water damage and I’m not paying them a penny. Back on hold and they say they’ll “delay” the excess until the leak report but if their company says it’s not their fault I’ll need to pay the £350. I’ve told them my next call will be to the Financial Ombudsman.

sounds like you need a claim well into 4 figures for inconvenience and damage caused on top of any repairs . I would copy them on the above, and say due to stress, bathroom and kitchen being out of action for extended period, loss of valuable time - that you would expect compensation in the region of £5k or you willl go to the ombudsman, Let them counter offer, but 2k minimum should be your stance

The underlying reason is not a drive to a cashless society, it's corporate Britain wishing to cut jobs, usually the ones most useful to the end consumer.

The only positive of cashless businesses loosely speaking is it eliminates end of day/month cashing up, petty thefts etc from staff. Mainly speaking about shops, restaurants etc.

Hmm. Disagree.

I'm of an age when I had to go to the bank to get my weekly beer money. Then came cheque guarantee cards. Then came ATM's. Then came cashback (from the local shop). Then came chip and pin. Now we've got contactless (no idea what's coming next).

I find life so much easier now. All of these changes have been embraced by us, the consumers, because they make life easier.

There's also a lot of studies around that technology does get rid of some jobs but creates others (sorry for all the jobs lost in the farrier industry, but bicycles are basically, better).

I'm not a tinfoil hat wearer that believes that technology change that makes lives easier for people like me is driven by 'big corporate'. It's simply people voting with their disposable income.

Only way you boost wages is increased productivity. I’ve no issue with automation, seeing hand car washes come back was depressing cos it was built off the back of cheap labour.

I want lights out warehouses and self driving delivery trucks and cleaning robots, let people do something that isn’t backbreaking and pays fuck all cos it makes no money.

A remarkable and unseen collection of paintings by Scottish Colourist artist George Leslie Hunter is expected to fetch more £400,000 when it comes up for sale at auction for the first time .

Amazon is shite now. Paid for membership for over ten years but will be stopping it now it’s gone up. It auto renewed at the old price in august. 10pm, cancelled orders last second etc.

Actually now I’ve said it I won’t cancel it, but I’ll still be annoyed about it.

I was in very early doors with it, 2007/2008 sort of time so I’ve always just had it and used it. Wouldn’t now though if I wasn’t used to it.
