Michael certainly companies have to register with the data protection act if they hold any personal data. I think you would be on very shakey ground going for any of these kind of things.

This is why I say ePetitions are a nightmare! They were brought in to make it easy and cheaper for the government to process - not to make them more accountable!

So what's your solution/idea sbvet? You're raising fair points (although not un-surmountable) so if you believe that there's too many obstacles/challenges in the way of making an e-petition successful, what would your course of action be to try and force some accountability of our situation?

Nick, you might be right. As I said I'm not sure how much a full page feature is at the CET, but I would have thought at the bare minimum you are looking at a few £100. Then how often are you printing this ad? Once a week / month? only once? Just look how often TV adverts appear per day! If you know how to market better than amnesty international, red cross, RNLI, RBL, and the royal navy, and they will do it for free, then can I have their address please. I can only assume this is naive bravado rather than practical experience.

It is fascinating just how defensive some of these lot are. It's like they just cannot face up to any problems!

I mean now we have just getting a signature and filling in later! Is this april's fools or a genuine thought?

I assume none of them have heard of the data protection act. There's another cost added to the cause!

So from being free you are paying for a web domain for a year (assuming you do the website development for free of course), you are paying to register for the data protection act, probably need a separate PC (as it will contain private data and their almost certainly will have an issue having this on a just any old PC/laptop). and you are back to paying for public liability insurance (which was the reason you weren't doing this in the first place!)

How could you leave a laptop in a pub? are you going to allow the public to potentially access other people's data? That is of course ignoring the high risk of theft!

I mean come on guys are these all practical jokes against the new guy? Or are some of you genuinely this naive?

I mean you are talking of a stall at the england match - who is paying for that? And you still are going to need insurance!

Let me spell it out.

If you campaign in public you are going to need public liability insurance!
Unless on private ground, you are going also to need a licence to legally distribute. Who is going to fund this?

Come on people, these are basic questions that should have been asked before this petition was even cosidered!

But please enlighten me if you have practical experience of running a successful street campaign on this scale without a budget. Because I have never experienced any successful campaign that hasn't spent thousands.

Even pub flyer campaigns can become pricey when they are scaled up.

But of course what would I know - this campaign has been successful without a single mention in the local or national papers, has had no free advertising, and hasn't already had plugs on national sports radio shows!

Yes this campaign has had no marketing whatsoever so far! (totally naive)

What a Wet Blanket you are.

I would never have tried parliament - I would have gone for FIFA / UEFA

I would have asked them at looking into bringing in licencing of owners - to ensure they have a minimum set of standards, and have to abide by a code of conduct.

This would mean....

1) It is world / europe wide
2) Limits their ability for legal challenges / burdening clubs with high legal bills.

For example part of the licence would mean you lose your licence if you leave the catchment area - no club would ever leave the catchment area!

They couldn't take them to court, because it is a rule they agreed to when they signed the licence permitting them to run the club! Even if they did they would be suing FIFA - Guessing they have better lawyers than the Higgs trust or ACL!

Maybe they won't agree, but at least it would have raised the profile to INTERNATIONAL attention! Then if FIFA have made a point of looking into it, it may well be announced on the news, so MILLIONS will have the issue in the back of their minds!

It still might not work, but I suggested making the issue not just coventry based, not even UK based, but GLOBAL!

And I suspect it wouldn't cost much more than you have spent already!

Just a thought!

And as it wouldn't be subject to the artificial time scales of an ePetition, you can take your time, co-ordinate with other football groups. If you decide the wording is wrong, you can amend accordingly.

Which do you think more likely to get news? FIFA looking into licences for owners or a back bench inquiry into football governance? Who knows you might get Michel Platini /Sepp Blatter backing the campaign!

Good ideas. What's stopping you from pursuing it? Crack on!

I invest in campaigns I am passionate about, or guess have 80% + chance of succeeding. The FIFA idea was of top of head. I haven't done a risk assessment of it. I would hazard a guess anything that only has to convince a committee has a better chance of success than one that needs to convince not only a committee, but an entire parliament, plus 100k of the general public has a greater chance of success.

I'd put FIFA at about 5-10% of success. I'd say KCIC less than that. I'm calling success getting an actual inquiry for KCIC. But 20:1 shots do come in occassionally! I could be wrong, and I would be happy to be so, but without funding, or a game plan, getting 100k is the easy part!

The Flaw in SBvets own idea off the top of his head is to rely on a corrupt pair of Individuals who act as though there should be some sort of Royal accession to the throne ,as against an epetition which intends to compel a democratically elected body to follow through with legislation promised if similar bodies who act like the Eufa /fifa cartels fail to implement there own policing recommendations .In the process contradicting himself by limiting his suggestion to owners only ,whereas the epetition is asking for an enquiry where all relevant parties would be subject to extreme scrutiny of their actions.

Bit out there, but how about getting on to Ed Milliband. His recent speech was all about "people powered services" and giving the common person a choice, not to mention his issues with "casino banking" and unaccountable power. Might get him to namedrop our cause if presented the right way. Considering he's likely to be the next PM would probably actually be something Joy would take notice of as well.

Anyone got any Labour connections?

Bloody well hope not!

If there is a space for a signature with a disclaimer saying I agree for my information to be used in the petition of so and so, I don't see an issue.
Not sure about creating an email address for somebody although it would eliminate the problem of people who do not have email addresses being able to sign the petition.

Can't be done, it would be fraudulent and open campaign up to accusations of abuse.

22:55hrs and just 4 signatures shy of 13,000.

Update 22:57 and 12,999!

Update 23:02, now 13,004...

So I think that makes it still slightly better than 1K per day.. so far.. next week inevitably will slower.. but we just need to keep promoting it anyway we can..

How am I contradicting myself? You are assuming I thought it had a good chance of success! Had you read my assessment, I expected less than 10% chance of success at best! I was asked how I would pursue this, and I gave a spit ball idea nothing more.

Trouble is Wingy I think what you are trying to undermine this off the cuff suggestion as if that makes the petition any more viable! Let's see if I can poke holes in the FIFA option

1) Funding issues
2) Relies on agreement by 2 or 3 people not renowned for democracy
3) Needs a co-ordinated effort from multiple supporter's group
4) Who / where would the campaign be run
5) How would we advertise this
6) Is their popular support
7) Is their a high likelihood of success
8) Do I feel passionate about the cause
9) Are the others as passionate as me
10) Is it viable

and so on and so on.

There are many many flaws in this plan as any others. You have tried to make this personal. If you do that you lose perspective!

Your contention for this petition is that it will compel a democratically elected body... well you know what you wrote!

Point is, even in the petition you admit this process has been gone through once without having a petition. What makes you think a petition backed by a minor MP is going to change the outcome or force action?

It's childish, naive and irrelevant. If it makes you feel good trying to get it through fine - but spare me this has a high likelihood of success!

I presume that somewhere along the line Michael was aware of ePetitions, and read the headline about 100k sugnatures and how a debate can be made to happen.

The debate is an out of chamber back bench MP debate, which has to be sponsored by another MP. This MP then has to champion the cause. It then gets heard in parliament.

In no way does this force the government to act! Indeed I suspect that if you check hansards, the timing of the debates allowed for ePetitions is silly O'clock when the real decsion makers are at home have en evening meal. They do get read, but only acted upon if events elsewhere put the issue in the spotlight.

An example is the Female Genital Mutilation. It will be debated, it may well even be debated in department, but it is a pointless petition! This is because the law they are asking for is already in existence!

My best guess, is now you have reached 10k, it will take a few weeks for the department to offer a response. In this response (again I am guessing), is that they will say they have already looked into this, and that the government is aware. No doubt they will also mention exactly what they have done, and probably say that they leave this sort of stuff to the Football League). If they do, then you may as well consider the issue dead, as if they are wiping their hands of the issue, it will never get to an inquiry!

Again, I could well be wrong, and you might be right. I'm just going from past experience. I don't follow long shots. Life is too short to waste time money and resources on sonmething that is unlikely to do anything. If it makes you feel like you are doing something then that's great.

I though will put my efforts into cause I feel are going to get results, or I feel passionate about. I feel passionate about getting rid of sisu. I don't get passionate over repeating an inquiry!

who knew!

Know what you mean - maybe I should post something on mumsnet! Great that you're promoting it at work. Word of mouth is really important

I think in a month or so, we go back on the message boards of the other clubs with an update (as I doubt they check) of where we are and ask them to keep plugging away and spreading the word. Perhaps we co-ordinate the wording on that so we're delivering a consistent message.

Good idea. I'm happy to draft something and post for people to comment on. Maybe aim for mid March?

The rate of progress is slowing to a relative trickle.

There can't be many people with any affinity to the club who haven't heard about the petition yet the number of sigs is only at 13K. Is this evidence of people starting to turn away from the club thanks to our glorious owners relocation to Shitfields initiative?

Do we know what proportion of sigs have come from non-CV postcodes? That would give a rough indication of support from non-Coventry supporters, and possibly highlight how successful the 'awareness on football boards' has been?

We're still between 500-1000 per day which is a good pace. There is a post earlier on this thread with a postcode breakdown. Perhaps whoever ran it (can't remember) can run an update. For example, and I'll use me as the example, I live in the PO postcode and one of the clubs I promoted to were Southampton in the SO postcode. Particularly with the SO postcode, we've been successful so it is working.

How do you see the post codes that have filled it in? Can you get any other data from it or just post codes?

Have you signed the petition Nick?! You had to put in your postcode. Someone managed to pull a file with this info so you could see where the signatures were coming from.

What other data would you want? I doubt you could get any more, or use it, due to data protection.

Don't know mate. I doubt we could get much else but it's useful to see the postcode breakdown. I'll ask whoever did it to run an updated one.

Just re-read my last reply to you back. Looked a little strong/forward...apologies, not meant like that :D

Just follow the links in the FAQs. All you can do is see is first 3 digits of postcode. No way of knowing if they're city fans in other parts of uk or non city fans in Cv postcodes. As WM has said, you can infer a bit from it but in terms of overall strategy, analysing what's going on and where to target it's no help

Perhaps we need another sticky for people who have already decided to sign the petirion but are a bit unsure about the process.
It would walk through the information that will be requested and the confirmation that will be required in order for the vote to be counted. I wouldn't want people to go on to the website to vote but not to complete the process.

Getting on for another 300 already today. For Spencer club on the 26th I've got my list of people I've promised to get a drink as an apology but if you're in the vicinity I'd be very happy indeed to buy you a pint as a token thanks for your awesome efforts on this

If I'm in the vicinity I'll drop by. No thanks necessary though, we do it for the love of our club after all.
