I agree there are no real financial comparisons to be made, but we are beginning to get a team together that look as if they might be capable of playing great football like Southampton, Swansea and Norwich did when they were down in League 1.

The sad thing is for many years people would have seen us as comparable to the likes of Southampton and Norwich, if not ahead of them. We're nowhere near following in their footsteps at the moment.

For 2 + 2 years. It will never be this cheap again, we do contribute to the upkeep in both the rent and matchday costs. You can't treat this deal as the the 'norm'.
I never get such comparisons. All 3 of those teams only really have one rival in their regional catchment areas...Portsmouth, Cardiff and Norwich. That fact alone accounts for many differences based on fan base, revenues and attractiveness to investors.

Why stop with Southampton? Man City were relegated to the old Third Division in 1998. After that victory over Wigan I feel sure we will be winning at least one European Cup within the next 5 years.

You should probably but that into context. When they first moved in they were paying a % a ticket sales above the capacity of the old stadium which was working out to approx £2m a year. The deal was changed to a rent of £2m a year however the big difference in the new deal is Man City get to keep the the money generated from naming rights, currently £35m a year.
It is always put things into context though. Hull paid less as the ground was paid for by the people of Hull. But it was the low rent that was used. Bournemouth paid 450k a year for a 11.5k stadium but it was OK as they are now run by a rich bloke. Doesn't matter about the years before him. Man City pay 3m a year but it is OK as they are a much bigger club than ours.
Come on astute, surely you can see there's a huge difference between paying £2m rent to get £35m sponsorship in return and a deal such as ours where we pretty much get nothing but access to the pitch for a few hours.

Like I said it is easy to pick clubs with a better deal in some way. When we were paying too much it was all about the rent. Now we have a very low rent it is about anything but the rent. If Bournemouth is mentioned it is all about their rich owner.
The rent needs to be a reasonable level. Any rent deal needs to give access to all revenues 365 days a year. Without that we are way behind pretty much every other team.
A rich owner would be nice and if they were prepared to chuck money in with no hope of a return would offset any issues with rent or lack of revenues.
I agree with most of it. But how much is 365 revenue worth for most clubs? They don't have an arena like the Ricoh. Parking spaces are limited at most grounds. Most grounds do not have lots of meeting rooms. They don't have a hotel. They don't have a casino. They have all the overheads though that we don't. So how much is the 365 worth to most clubs? Not as much as many would like you to believe.
You couldn't have a ground that is more dilapidated than Fratton Park and has less facilities for generating revenue. They made just short of £1.5m according to their most recent accounts from non matchday revenues. They paid around £100K in ground maintenance the first year the trust was in charge, said to be an unusually high amount as nothing had been done for years.
Where is that info? Not what I saw at all. They may have taken that much before expenses but it wasn't profit. They do concerts and that sort. But here we are cherry picking numbers again. What a change fro Bournemouth to Portsmouth.
I think Fratton Park has only had one concert if I recall correctly, which was Madness a month or so back.
