Been enjoying watching the football Mavericks programme seeing those players who stood apart from the rest. Looking back over the years at some of our players who could be called mavericks I'd start with David Speedie,a firebrand but what a footballer too.Then how about madcap keeper Les Sealey ? They say most keepers are mad and he could be crackers at times but was good as well. Killer looked different from most players,and I'd stick Micky Quinn in there too as he didn't fit the mould,but knew where the net was.
Any more City mavericks ?

There have been three and that's all I think they made.It's been great to see the likes of Bowles,Hudson,Marsh,Worthington etc,as I saw them in the seventies against us and they were individuals but great players.I'd put Speedie in amongst them though as he had the lot didn't he ? Mad as a box of frogs but what a player !

Good shout wingy but those two were more about dirty play than actual individual skill ? Although Wise could play a bit. The telly programme seemed to focus on great players more than say just characters. Tommy Hutchison should have been featured I reckon as he stood apart didn't he ?

Agreed but he wasn't playing out of London or a playboy
Was Charlie George featured and surely Best

Yes both of them were featured heavily as like you say both were showbiz types as well as gifted players. I couldn't imagine Scholes being on a maverick list could you ? So really it was about great players, but who were flamboyant with it and liked the fanny and booze !

Me and my late father were at Highfield Road when Gazza was playing for Newcastle against us,and he was only a young lad and a bit chunky. My dad after an hour said to me: " that young fat lad is going to be a great player one day. " He ran the show that afternoon and the rest is history as they say.

I think Big Duncan Ferguson would qualify as a Maverick.....

Always showed up for the big games......totally unplayable according to the centre backs of the era.

Drank 5 bottles of red wine & got nicked the night before his first ever Merseyside derby......which he played in, scored & got man of the match.

A bit of a head-case.....done time in glasgows toughest prison.....hard as fuck.....played in the 1995 FA Cup final 10 days after a double hernia operation......foiled 2 separate burglaries singlehandedly....the first one had him fight one bloke off whilst restraining the other......2 years later he put another burglar in hospital for 2 days treatment.

Don't mess with Duncan Disorderly.....on or off the pitch.
