know there has been a few threads on this guy, but worth another me thinks...

honestly believe the biggest master stroke played by robins was singing this guy!
yes we have young exciting young talent & yes we have a great striker in McNulty , but I dont believe the young talent would have thrived like they did without his galvanising of that midfield & the team in general ( especially when times got tough ) ... and im not sure McNulty would even be at the club, let alone come through the dry patch at the start of the season without Doyle in his ear.

He had unfinished business, as others have before who returned, the difference is this guy got better as he got older !!

I'm going to get shot down for this but i don't think it was a master stroke. I just think we had a very young and inexperienced side in dire need of an older head to give them some direction. Doyle was available, knew the club so it was a no-brainer to sign him really. He had proved with Pompey that he still had the legs for league 2 so it was a fairly safe bet. I don't think even Robins realised just how important a player he was going to be.

I don't know, I think Robins knew exactly what he needed, remember that he was in for Doyle prior to last season finishing.

Yeah maybe so. I just think that re-signing ex players is always a gamble and MR couldn't have known that this one would pay off as well as it did. I suppose though all signings are gambles aren't they so i guess it makes no odds.

Bit confused by this. If you re-read your post, you say it wasn't a master stroke, then go onto explain why it actually was ! The only bit you say against it being a master stroke, was that you didn't think MR knew he was going to be so important (but he may have) - so I vote for 'Master stroke !'

Agree with the OP. I was pretty nonplussed when he signed but the guy is a winner. I don’t think we would’ve gone down last year if he was in the fold. He wouldn’t have allowed some of the performances from some of those players last year.

He is like a poor man's roy Keane. I'd say he is a massive presence in the dressing room you wouldn't want to mess him about I'd say he would slit you in half

Is it true he turned down terms at Pompey to come here. I heard something about not having guaranteed playing time there.

I guess all I was saying was that we were all surprised that Doyle has had such a big impact and I think MR probably was too. I don't think he signed him thinking that he was the pivotal lynch pin to win promotion
