This bought back memories of when games went ahead during winter.. Supporters clearing pitches, games being paused to clear lines and fans walking to matches without having to be informed it was sloppy under. Snowball fights against the opposition supporters..

Canadian Premier League final: Atletico Ottawa's 'icicle kick' lights up blizzard-hit final

Atletico Ottawa win the North Star Cup with an "icicle kick" lighting up a match that was repeatedly stopped to clear snow from the pitch.

It was a cold winter that year because I'm sure there was also an orange ball for the game v Southampton on new year's day when Whelan scored that great individual goal

It wasn't that unusual in the 70s through the 90s for all games to be off. You'd often seen the snow piled up behind the touch lines for a few weeks in a cold winter. Snow before Christmas seems very rare now but it was pretty common back then.

I'm a bit boring so was watching the weather at the weekend, the forecaster was saying that there are 3 weeks less ground frosts today than 50 yrs ago, seems to be less snowy winters also.

Remember Middlesborough coming to a freezing snowy Highfield rd with Juninho and Ravanelli .. both had lost interest 20 mins into the game.

Standing/Sitting in slushy snow on the terraces in a pair of Sambas was certainly character building!
When grounds were based nearer town centres people had more options to get to a game- walking mainly.
Somewhere like the CBS would be much more likely to be called off due to closed roads and public transport cancellations, let alone the car parks..

I 'remember' the New Years Day 1980 game v Middlesbrough - We won 2-0. Andy Blair got one, can't remember who got the other
I'm certain there was a bit of snow.
Deffo recall the Boro fans doing a very impressive conga on the sparsely filled pen at the Kop end at HT.

Week before the Qtr final in 87 we played Wednesday at home. Started snowing in the 2nd half necessitating introduction of the orange ball. My footwear that day was a pair of Hi-Tec Silver Shadow and took about a week for my feet to thaw out.

I'll bet he never caught many. Probably punched a few though.

We drew at their place once, in the cup, I think 2-2, and beat them at home 5-0. The pitch was more like a swimming pool that match.
