The Clubs view of todays activity (1 Viewer)

Coventry City’s first team squad remains the same despite frenetic activity on transfer deadline day - but the club has cut its wage bill with the departures of three players.

The Sky Blues development director Steve Waggott and manager Steven Pressley had to fend off interest in several players while also trying to add at least one to the squad.

Waggott said: “It is common knowledge that a couple of our players were targets for other clubs. We were determined to keep the pool of players we have assembled because we believe the squad is developing extremely well.

“That did not prove to be easy but we were steadfast and had the owner’s total backing.

“I would think every club wanted to add to its squad and we did want to bring a player in, but it did not work out. It was not a pressing need, just someone we felt would add to our strength in a certain area.

“We thought we had an agreement but the selling club changed the type of deal, and it no longer suited us.”

Gary McSheffrey, Steve Jennings and Kevin Malaga also all left the club before the deadline.

Waggott added: “The three were the last remaining players who were not in the manager’s plans this season, so to have them all leaving and off our books is a positive move for all parties.

“Gary is a Coventry lad and has had two spells here and we wish him, as well as Steve and Kevin, all the best in their future careers.”

As in we have a small pool? N I get the backing bit, as in why you won't get started lol. But surely now we can all go to sleep without worrying if there was last minute raids for our main players?

Disappointing that a potential deal didn't materialise

I think will still try to do something with freebies/loan players though

agree with that, but didn't want to go to bed sleeping on some SISU spin, about backing the manager and keeping our squad together.

"we were faced with a choice, sell one of our major assets or release fringe players who were not part of the manager plans"

Thats all they needed to say

Oh yeahh, you've gotta take that statement with a pinch of salt, knowing waggot has a gun to his head and is currently suspended by his ankles above a shark tank. but I'd say it's been a successful night, with the potential for adding frees or loans. But the full backing bit is complete shite.

Yeah to be fair there's no pressing need for additions when the average age of our bench is barely 20 and that of the defence is only higher because there's one veteran defender in amongst them.

We have space for 3/4 signings now the bomb squad and gone so I think we will start seeing loans/frees over the next week or so (well when the window opens). Fantastic day for us yesterday with none of the prospects leaving. Buzzing. Now we can fully concerntrate on winning the next 2 home games and seeing where in the league that puts us. Next aim then is to get as high up the league before January as possible when the next window looms

Personally, I think the "Transfer Window" should be scrapped and we go back to the old way.

Anyone else worried about most of our promising young players being on only 1 year contracts ?
I know we would get a fee should they be tapped up and leave at end of their contracts, but it would be nice to get them signed up for longer.
Hope SISU are sorting this.

I didn't think Jennings did that badly last season when things were going well under Robins. Sheffers had to go though, I bet that cost SISU a few quid as well.

I always want new players and I stopped up until after 11 watching SSN hoping we'd sign someone. Well, it wasn't to be but I really pleased we managed to keep hold of Christie, Wilson, Clarke and Baker.

I liked Jennings. I think he would have been a useful asset this season.

Does anyone have any idea of how much money this chopped off the wage bill?

If its £15K a week, seems about the difference between Fisher's lowest anticipated 3K gate a sixfields, to what we're acutally getting.

Im fed up of these fools using the website as propaganda. The fact that they put it on the website as "Deadline Day round up" made me giggle like a school girl.
