The 2002/03 Season- was this our best chance of getting back? (1 Viewer)

Before november we'd only lost 4 of our 18 games, leaving us in a safe 7th place, only a win away from 5th. Although a somewhat sticky patch in november saw us loose 4 out of 5 games leaving us in 15th place after a home defeat to preston. However, we saw an outstanding christmas period, winning 4 games on the bounce and remaining undefeated for a further 4 games. By the end of January we were 6th. Yes, you could argue the teams around us had a game or two in hand but a win next game could have saw us up to 4th place.

From february onwards we took a turn for the worse winning only 1 of the last 17 games, loosing 12 of them. This terrible run of form saw us stoop in reach of relegation, leaving us in 20th place, surviving by only 4 points.

Does anyone have a clue about the goings on of the latter 3 months of the season and why our form was so bad?

We lost at Rochdale in the FA Cup and from then on only won one more game all season at Grimsby. I'd still say our best chance was in the first season where we were in the play-offs as late as March/April before some terrible end of season form.

3 things

1. craig hignett got injured - he was the inspiration behind our run
2. Bothroyd and mcsheffrey were sent to train at the memorial park
3. Money - because of this and 1+2 above, we were forced to play the kids Noon , Mooney , a young osbourne etc

I think our best chance was a season that didn't actually happen in the end. For me Eric Black was the man who would've done it. We had a good group of players playing good, attacking and goal-scoring football and i genuinely believe he'd have taken us places. But it wasn't to be because the board at the time wanted big-name peter reid in charge rather than an actual talented manager. Oh well.
