Yeah they cancelled a home game against Blackburn at the last minute, as they had an injury/illness crisis which had ripped through their squad. The points deduction was small (2 points?) but made the difference. Bryan Robson said in hindsight that, had he known the potential impact of postponing the game unilaterally, he'd have "picked the tea lady".

As for the other two parts of the "double", they did at least reach two cup finals (three, if you count the League Cup replay*). I'd have taken a couple of cup finals in a single season, hardly a failure in itself.

*last time a League Cup / FA Cup final replay was held, IIRC. It was also at Hillsborough, so this was the last time such a game was held away from Wembley/Millennium Stadium. I remember it also for the Tory 1997 election campaign staking a lot on a "John Major personal plea to the nation" on BBC1 which was expertly timed to coincide with the moment when many voters would be watching the Coca Cola final on the other side.

I remember walking (floating?) away from Anfield at the time the first League Cup game was underway in a state of utter disbelief at what I'd just witnessed.

This animosity isn't going to go away anytime soon and I can see morons from all over who don't support either team, descending on the stadium to crack heads when we next cross paths be it next season or further on. Certainly won't be an away game I'll be tempted to go to.
If Feyernord 'fans' were there last Saturday, what's the chances of Ajax coming over as well ?

Highly likely. I reckon they'd clean up.

They are talking about trouble at the Portsmouth game now because you know at Wembley it was all Pompey fans fault if anything kicked off , talking about how their fans will be up for it , no doubt start talking about how visiting the SOL is like the camp nou And how little old Pompey should feel honoured playing the mighty Sunderland , just like us Coventry rats .

I sense a theme here , it’s never their fault and everybody just has a problem with them for absolutely no reason , bellends

It's a despicable insult launched at disabled people who have done nothing other than to be unfortunate enough to be born with less control of themselves than other people. Allows knobs to give themselves a laugh ridiculing the less fortunate. Big boys.

Surprised the Sunderland supporters have not been moaning about us coming from behind to beat them in the FA Cup in 1963,or perhaps that is another reason why they feel so bitter about us.

Sunderland forum suggesting their cheif steward has said Coventry are worse fans that have ever visited SOL and are worse than any European derby game.

Has anyone ever heard so much shite in their life?

“in all of the games coventry have travelled to they haven't used a single pyrotechnic.. they set off 5 at our place (2 arrested specifiaclly for this)”

This is a quote from their forum , they do realise (rightly or wrongly )we are arguably some of the worst fans for letting off and throwing pyrotechnics I have come across , see mkdons , Northampton and notts county for reference .

My god that forum is just one big echo chamber of bullshit

Last thing I will say on the matter now as it’s tiring reading their forum .

If any Sunderland fans read this mark my words .
You said some bad things about this city it’s people the club and a club legend who is dead and acted surprised when it went off between the clubs supporters in both matches this season , this is YOUR doing .

And yet furthermore since the matches you have continued to talk us down , our club down and jimmy hill down and even threaten warm welcomes next season if you don’t go up this season .

If You are going to continue this until next season when / if the clubs meet again you CANNOT moan about what happens as you are already fuelling it.

Coventry fans won’t take it , as you should already know by now , see you next season

Don’t cry though 5-4 PUSB

Fully expect Doncaster to get something from them tomorrow - worth having them in your acca, 10/11 double chance is decent.

That forum is pathetic, best ignored now. Full of wannabe hard men and keyboard warriors, look forward to them failing in their promotion push hopefully.

Cant believe some of the shit on there. Saying it wasnt the minority but the majority of city fans throwing bottles and assaulting women and children. Thats nearly 3000 bottles. Trying to really stir it up complaining to the FA, ground H S manager and anyone else that will listen.

Not condoning anyone who has been involved though and the full poer of the law should be brought down on them

What a vial poor losers bunch they really are.

‘Outside the ground mate, I saw two separate groups have ago at families (one with very young children). In 30 years of attending football matches, I have never come across a more cowardly away support.’

Said the exact same after they lost at Wembley, Pompey attacking families, women, elderly. Load of bollocks.

Followed the city for 28 years home and away and can honestly say I’ve never seen any of our so called hooligan element offer it to anybody other than ones that are on the same page.

Pisses me off reading some of the shite their spouting about us.

Yep didn’t happen.

However, I did see some Mackems confronting a dad and his young son not far from the coaches. Wankers.

If by some miracle we did finish 6th, it could be ugly if they ended up in 3rd place. I’m not sure anyone would relish two more games between our clubs in May.

I've watched a few of those "match day experience" videos from some Sunderland fans from the game at the
weekend. They all mentioned that they hoped there wasn't any trouble and acted like nice upstanding people.

Then onto the match and anytime they score they give the finger and shout e.g "fuck off ya pack of bastards" towards the Coventry fans. There seems to be proper hatred there.

They then verbally abuse Chaplin for celebrating "fook off ya little c**t" etc

Then in one particular video, the Sunderland fan goes on a rant at the end while filming the Cov supporters, shouting "get ta fook ya dirty homeless bastards, ya haven't even got a stadium man!"

They seem like genuinely stupid people. Is there a nuclear power plant near Sunderland?

Why not? They've held a grudge for how many years? Stands to reason that they'll be moaning about this for the rest of eternity now too.
