Do you agree it wasn't a good move to constantly spend money we didn't have considering the implications it had to our club?

The mistake fans make is they think football clubs are like any other business when they're not.

I don’t think it make a blind bit of difference. We went to L2 because of Sisus mismanagement. The debt had been cleared at that point. It’s just something people say to sound rational but it’s not based on anything. Clubs finances are limited by the owner and not a lot else and their future by whether they have a sustainable brand which almost all league clubs do.

Deciding to build a new stadium with inadequate finances was the killer blow.

Dropping out of the top division just as media revenue exploded was the nail in the financial coffin …. The rest was window dressing

Missed out on the Sky money then missed out on the ITV money. All downhill from there.

The club's accounts for years ending 2000 and 2001 show operating losses (before amortisation of players which imo is a paper loss) of £1.5m in each year. After that it added in profits on sales of players which brought both years to a profit position. I think the day to day financial management was fine really.

The issue was financing of player purchases through the leaches that were on the club's board at the time and the venture to build the stadium.

This is extraordinary, that fat brummie wanker McGinnity's words about Roland Nilsson in the club's accounts, ignoring his own role in bringing in that dinosaur Jim Smith and the crap players he signed:

Ipswich had 3 players in their starting 11 that played their last game of last season (and one was Hutchinson who they had to sign permanently)

Think we’d do something similar if we went up this season. The step up is huge and we have very few players who could do it

The Ipswich game this season should also tell you how big the step up is.

Wright and MVE are the only players I’d feel confident starting in the Premier League.

Dovin and Rudoni are still young and have not yet shown the consistency required to play in the PL next season.

Kitching and Thomas are also nowhere near PL quality.

Grimes has some PL experience but couldn’t really break through when he was at Swansea. EMC wouldn’t be able to bully fullbacks like he can today.

I like literally all these players but people are hugely underestimating the difference in quality. We played one of the worst PL teams this season in front of a sell-out crowd and got battered.

Purely from an ability perspective I’d be of the thought that Wright, Van Ewijk, Dovin, Rudoni and Grimes could all make the step up. EMC I’m not sure on as he’s quick, but not that quick, and whilst he is technically decent I get the impression it’d be a step too far.

Thomas and Kitching would get run ragged.

I think people are overlooking the indifferent patches of form that both Rudoni and Dovin have seen this season, which are quickly forgotten in the Championship but are fatal in the PL.

Both could be PL players one day, but next season?

Hardly a hot take, is it. If we do happen to go up this season, chances are we’d be favourites to finish bottom anyway. Besides, surely it would also make a difference what other players were alongside them?

Well obviously yes. I just think the position Rudoni plays is so important that you can’t afford to start a sub-PL quality player there and still have a chance of staying up.

If we went up we would likely be signing new players in almost every position, but I would expect AM to see some of the most important/expensive signings of all.

I haven't seen anyone underestimate the task of staying up if we get there.

Dovin has been very good since he came back into the team.

MVE would prove his worth. But he wouldn't be able to have the freedom he now has. Defend or attack.

Grimes was a Prem player at the start of his career. He is now experienced and a much better player.

Rudoni has come on at a vast pace under Lampard. There's nothing to suggest he has reached his peak.

Tats would have a better chance of making an impact with the protection of VAR.

EMC would create chances for us.

Wright showed his class last game. He would score goals in the Prem.

This isn't saying these players would walk into other Prem sides. But they are a base to start on. We showed last season that we can get results against the lower Prem sides like Wolves and Manchester United. I can't see us doing a Southampton. Even Luton gave it a go.

We would have to play more defensively and hit on the break. Take advantage of MVE's long throws. Bring in experienced defenders. But we would still lose more than the combined wins and draws.

But what we do have is a close knit bunch of players, support that will always back our side and a manager of the caliber of Lampard whose experience at top level is second to none.

We will still most probably go straight back down. The hope is that a side like this season with Wolves struggle with the other two sides that goes up finish below us. But the aim would be to go down stronger and become a top Championship side with the extra Sky money. Eventually survive one season in the Prem then stay above the promoted sides.

Teams like Brentford and Brighton did what we are doing-gradually built there squad in the championship, didn’t have loans, bought young talented players (from under valued leagues), had progressive managers, then sold for a huge profit and bought better players.

Eventually they had a squad good enough to go up and stay up.

Not the boom and bust of Sheff Utd, Norwich, L**ster etc

The comparison with us and Brighton and Brentford makes zero sense.

They had huge financial backing compared to us. Unless we get a new owner, we have next to no chance of emulating them.

For example, Bloom has invested over £400m in interest free loans in Brighton since 2009.

I really think people are massively underestimating the jump from Championship to PL. if our players were PL quality they’d have been signed by a PL team.

All it takes is a little luck.

We've not had massive investment but are up there with the teams that have in our quest to reach the Prem. We're a club in ascendancy. Investing untold millions isn't guaranteed success but it helps.

Investing £400m over 16 years sounds massive but it's only 25m a year. I say only because Sky money is much more.

How much have Stoke wasted? The wasted millions have caught up with Leicester. They're not the only sides.

We need to worry less about getting massive investment and just enjoy the journey. Getting to the Prem would be great but being there wouldn't. I honestly think we would do best staying in the Championship for another year or so.

I really think people are massively underestimating the jump from Championship to PL. if our players were PL quality they’d have been signed by a PL team.

Not when we see the same sides that go up come straight back down.

Should we throw the towel in before we get a chance to play a Prem game?

All it takes is a little luck.

I’m not saying we need massive investment but the belief that we’re the next Brighton or Brentford isn’t the case. We’re more likely to become a yo-yo club for a while so we can move towards having a squad that can actually survive in the PL.

Lose a week Friday and we’ll be lucky to stay in the top 10

No, we should sign some PL quality players if we get to the PL.

Our best realistic hope would be to become a yo-yo club. That's the same for everyone these days. The important thing is to come back down stronger than we go up.
