Yeah, that might well be the case. We’ll have to be prepared for that as fans. Hence the expectations. I’m not saying it will be fun, but to stay up we’ll have to work out how to get more from the resources we got. People need to realise the whole team isn’t going to completely flip.

No we have to make more than 5 signings, 5 signings for a team that’s going up is pathetic and shows no ambition. Need at least 8 with them being a mixture of experience

I’m not saying I agree or disagree with it, but I think the argument to counter yours would be the ambition is there but has to be stretched out over more than one season

We will lose more than 5 so obviously will sign more

You think? I'm thinking possibly 5. Rushworth and the players who will want more game time, Jamie and Bidders. Brau obviously. Possibly Simmo I think but that's about it by my reckoning.

He'll have a budget fixed for sure. Before we start all of the players will get a promotion increase so the wage bill might well double overnight. If he invests say £30m he'll be in for a large wad. We will write off the transfers over the length of the contracts but we'd still need to find the initial cash. He'll also want to cover some of the existing debt and perhaps to pay down a chunk of the stadium so I'm with you and we certainly won't do a Sunderland. We could attract new investment but it would come at a coast in control of the club.

If we go straight down that’s £20m immediate cost from not having the third year of parachute payments plus about £40m in revenue the next year.

It’s painful, but I think King will be thinking over a 5 year plan, which will hopefully include some yo-yoing. That’s why I’m concerned about the expectations on here

Why would you hope we get relegated? Luton and Leicester have shown staying in the championship isn’t guaranteed let alone immediate promotion.

we’ve taken a quarter of a century to get back after last time hoping to go back down again is insanity tbh

He won't pay down on the stadium, that's good debt and small by todays asset standards. Debt is a good thing so long as it's not out of control ie Leicester.

We don't know how the debt is structured I don't think and I was guessing but there might be an obligation on promotion for example.

we can’t have them as our front line next season

It's quite likely after the WC that we can't afford to keep Haji anyway! That wouldn't be ideal and a replacement (the leading scorer in the Championship across 3 seasons) would be far from cheap. We need a striker as it is just to cope with the rough and tumble.

Players kept on from the current squad will be fewer than most think if we are to make a go of it. Some of them like Eccles will be wanted by good championship clubs. Current first team for example I only see Rudoni, Torp, Milan, EMC, Sakomotto, Grimes, Da.Silva, Thomas, and possibly Latti surviving the cut. BUT we may be limited by financial restraint which would mean one or two others might get to stay and prove themselves like Wright, Kitching, and we will likely want Onyeka as well as Rushworth.

Interesting to see what all of you actually think?

Looks like Ipswich want to sign Rushworth in the summer. Wish we could run a tractor over them boys. Absolutely hate them.

their fans would prefer Patterson:

Forum | Carl Rushworth by Cheltenham_Blue

Or Anthony Patterson. Think I would go for Patterson if a GK is in the offing.

I would 100% support/encourage them signing Patterson over Rushworth, but McKenna’s the one I’m worried about not their fans. Wish they still find a way to cock up promotion due to the fixture congestion.

Yeah think I agree with this. I think if they sell Verbruggen for the sort of fee he will go for, combined with £20m for Rushworth, they'll have rich pickings for some of the best keepers in europe to buy instead, with more elite level experience than Rushworth.
I think Brighton’s model is to sell on some players that have developed, and make a significant profit on, to keep the books balanced. I imagine even Verbruggen will come into this category. The fact they have Rushworth on the books being developed by the top Champ side show what a good model they have, so really it is win -win for them.

A number of teams in Prem have to sell good players to keep going. This will likely be our model too. Even Sunderland, before their big spend last year, took some significant profit on a few players, one would imagine to keep the PSR books balanced?

Yeah this is what I mean - if they get £70m for both BT and CR, they could likely buy one of the best young keepers in the world for £30m and keep fuelling the model, all whilst keeping their squad quality top tier.

Dasilva and Lati in our defence next season would literally give supporters PSD - they are hopelessly ill equipped to be first team choices - Onyeka signs as part of the deal anyway

Both internationals Grendel and they may just step up well. Da.Silva was Wales best player recently, deserves a chance.

Rushworth has a year to go on his contract plus a years option so they have to sell or extend really and I doubt he'll sign on to be a number two.

Imo loads of signings rarely works. Keep the nucleus with some smart additions. A goalscorer is key

We’re making an assumption about outgoing players. We can only get rid of those out of contract. A buyer has to be found for anyone else - otherwise they stay.

When did I ever say I hope we would get relegated? I’m not even saying Doug King would want that. A bit silly of you to think anybody would want that. What he might be thinking is to be careful financially to ensure we don’t overspend to hope on one season. As part of that he would have to consider if we did go back down how to put us in a position to go straight back up and make us even steadier as a PL club. None of it is binary, but assessing risk vs benefit.

I'm guessing this is why Doug doesn't like loans unless necessary. He's not our player he's Brighton's. They will do what is best for Brighton not for us. I would think he won't be bullied by Brighton and will look elsewhere if that happens. Unless of course he's been clever and included a buy option in the loan deal. Either way there will be a plan in place as to players we are interested in, goalkeepers included.

Fair enough bud. Firstly I was talking about what Doug King would be thinking. I’m actually not sure if I feel we should spend big or not. In terms of yo-yoing what I meant was in context of my previous message. He will have to essentially assess how much to spend that will give us a fighting chance to stay up, but also consider not to spend too much to leave us resilient enough if we were to get relegated to be able to go back up again - by ‘hoping to yo-yo’ I meant the being financially robust enough to go back up.

All theory of course, but I think those that think the squad will be completely revamped may be disappointed. King has referenced that the financial sustainability of the club is most important (quite rightly), so I don’t see massive upturn. Obviously I’m not him so could definitely be wrong.

A Welsh international playing for Real Madrid should be at the same level as a Welsh international playing for Coventry City.
