I think equally for a 'selling club' with horrible owners we have done pretty well keeping talent in the club and not folded at the first sight of a cheque book. I would like to think that we can show this with Bayliss. Personally think Shipley will have a bigger year next season

Exactly, it's getting the best deal for the club and the player. Like I said we're by no means in a position to be turning down substantial bids just on the principle we achieved promotion. We still rely on that income to keep our doors open as most clubs do. But if he was sold and whoever the buyer was granted us another season with him still in the squad as a loanee then how is that a bad scenario? The money from the deal could subsequently be reinvested in improving the squad and the infrastructure of the CCFC. One player doesn't make a club after all.

Doubt that’s where he got it from. He’s not employed by the Telegraph.

Anyway, Leicester wouldn’t be a good move. Nor any Premier League club. The next step if he is to leave is to a Championship club and be around their 18 not playing U23 football

hes only ever played league 2, league 1 is the perfect next step in his development. this isnt bias, i think another year at ccfc is best for his overall career even if not for his bank balance

I would of thought a prem team would have him now get a pre season with them and loan him out to Championship or Premiership in Scotland. For him his bank balance would get to a level we would not compete in and his career path would be set.

He is one tackle away from no career and no millionaire lifestyle. If an offer is in its tough on the lad to not have his head turned. Or an agent with influence pushing him with a now or never situation.

He already has when talking to the Telegraph about keeping ahold of key players (Bayliss, McNulty and JP). He said it’s hard adjusting from 1st team football back into development football in what was obviously a swipe at Thomas. Let’s be honest, Thomas career has taken a backward step this year by moving to Leicester. Sure, he got a Wales cap, but he’s just stacked their U23 team when he could’ve achieved bigger things with us had he stayed. Or frankly, a team that would’ve given him 1st team football.

I think the club have a good relationship with his agency. They have a few of our players signed.

Moose from Talksport interviewed Robins after the game and he said Tom won’t be the issue just the agents need to be calm and see what we’ve done with him. Also that he needs to continue to play at senior level.

He confirmed Bayliss is under contract aswell until 2020 so they’ve triggered the one year extension

my hope is we get back to back promotions retaining bayliss, shipley, ponticelli, mcnulty, jones, andreu, willis along the way

likes of grimmer, kelly and burge can become backup/rotational squad players

and we would have to say goodbye to some like biamou, stokes, haynes who probably wouldnt make step up to championship

that said a long way to go loooooooool

I'm not sure Thomas thinks it's a backward step in lifestyle or career. He played well the other night and was certainly not off the pace of the game or out of his depth.

Can understand both sides of the argument.

If you sign for a Prem club at say 19, 20, 21 and don’t make the grade you can just fall back down to a club at our level and be far richer for it.

Money isn’t everything in a footballer’s life. Career development is obviously the priority at someone his age. I’m happy he made his debut for Wales, and that’ll probably justify his move (to himself) because I doubt he’d have been selected had he scored 20-25 goals in L2 with us.
This said, what’s next for Thomas’ career? He’s evidently nowhere near breaking into the Leicester senior team, so his only alternative to more U23 football is a loan move. Atm, the most likely that loan destination will be L1, or a lower Championship side. In essence, his career would’ve gone from L1, backwards to Development leagues, back to L1 and all he has to show for it is a senior cap in friendly for Wales. He won’t get another opportunity in a competitive fixture if he’s not getting first team football.
To go from consistent first team football, back to development football at 20 going on 21, is undoubtedly a step backwards. Had he signed for even a L1 club and showed similar form to the tail end of 16/17 season, he’d have top end Championship teams sniffing around him. Instead, L1 is the likely destination... where he started. Top coaches at Leicester would help him out, but nothing beats 1st team football — that is true in any sport, anywhere.

Even Barrett was smashing it for Reading U23s, in fact, one of the most productive in his league, did absolutely nothing for us.

Making a move for money at his age is pretty dumb, because if he really is the real deal, he’d earn more money than sitting in a development team.

I have to disagree with this, the priority should be tying him to a longer contract. Charlton sold Lookman for 7.5 million, we sold Maddison who is a much better player for say 1 million? We are terrible at holding out for decent fees, we need Bayliss tied down, playing well in league one and then if someone does come calling we need to make them pay through the nose.

We sold for more but Lookman has played in the premier league and now the Bundesliga and is still 21?

How much then? 2 million? I'm struggling to find a fee to be honest, regardless, in comparison we got fisted. I would suggest there's a very good chance Maddison will have a better career than Lookman, i guess time will be the judge there.

Whilst I’m biased. I also think that another year with us playing first team football under our coaching staff will develop Bayliss far quicker and better than development football or being used as a it part player off the bench.

The risk for him is that some Neanderthal ends his career with a bad tackle, but that can happen at any level. However, we are very proud of the achievements of our academy and I don’t think it’s any coincidence that CCFC graduates are breaking into higher grades of football - due to gettting the opportunities here. We don’t have a monopoly on talent or good coaching. Too many other clubs stifle talent by banking it at development level.

Try closer to £3m, with add-ons apparently making the deal worth up to £9m. With sell-on clauses, at 10% (which is low) we’d get £2.5-3m if he goes for the quoted £25-30m, it’s closer to 20%, those figures double. The total could be between £5.5-9m, so actually, if it’s not that bad a deal at all for Maddison. Factor in the fact he wasn’t a dominant League 1 player, and if you want to play the ‘price tag game’, he certainly isn’t worth the same as Dele Alli who was sold for £5m.

You’re speaking retrospectively, this season Maddison tore up the Championship for a midtable side, I don’t think anyone would’ve predicted that this season at his age...

It’s said in some articles around £3 million in addition to add ins which are likely to double that fee

We haven’t been ‘fisted’ at all. Without add-ons from Norwich, if he is sold for the quoted amount this summer, we’ll end up with about £5.5-9m. Which is more than what MK Dons got for Alli, who is going to World Cup with England, which undermines your rudimentary argument.

I haven't seen the figures you're quoting but if you are indeed correct then i guess i'd have to say that isn't bad (still less than Charlton got for Lookman though.)

Regardless my point stands that he needs to be tied down to avoid a George Thomas situation, also Premier League clubs' wallets are getting more bloated by the year and we should be valuing our players to reflect this.
