Just seen the replays and can't believe that's not been given. Shouldn't make a difference where the contact is made, but he gets his standing leg dragged away so has no chance of getting to the ball. Goes down like a sack of shit and he gets it (not blaming O'Hare).

Yeah that’s my thinking. Even if he touched the ball he then drags O’Hare away from it so he cant get to the ball.

The old "contact with consequence" for me. Don't think there's a lot of contact, hence why O'Hare tried to stay on his feet, he doesn't usually need much encouragement to hit the deck. Could easily go either way. As always with subjective decisions, some you'll get, some you won't.

And for that you’d not be marked down on the assessor report for your reasoning

Assuming it’s given (and scored), it changes the complexion of the game, but still no guarantee we would go on to win.

That’s a penalty. Trailing leg just drags O’Hare’s foot with it.

Good player that Smallbone. Rumour has it that the Milan free kick hit him so hard in the face that he grew eyebrows.

Even the Southampton fans said it should’ve been a penalty. One they got away with.

For me the only people appealing for a pen were the fans….even around me.
I don’t even think O’hare is asking for one, it’s frustration. Not one player appealed for it from what I remember - which probably tells its own story.

Near the end of the half around 40 minutes in.
I’ve looked again and changed my view it was a foul, a penalty and consequently a sending off.
The Armstrong one was a fantastic tackle from Bidwell two or three seconds later would have been a pen and sending off.

Haven’t watched it other than live and the original replay but I think Bidwell got away with one

He sort of put his hands out but I think more out of frustration that it didn’t come to anything. That’s what I thought at the time. He’s not screaming for it, more half-hearted I felt.
everyone just carried on - Sakamoto puts his arm up but then just cracked on with it.

edit: just watched it back and actually a few players put their arms out to ask but then just carry on - even Clive Eakin didn’t think it was.
Don’t get me wrong I think there wouldn’t have been any complaints had it been given but it was a speculative appeal I reckon.

Actually it looks like the defender does get the ball from one angle.

What do you mean by “get the ball”?

He touches the ball, but he still fouls O’Hare

They appealed but then played to the (non) whistle, which is a good job as Armstrong S was steaming up their left wing.

i wonder how many more points we might have had but for incorrect penalty decisions both for and against. Never mind, it will all even itself out over the course of the season. Apparently.

I think the first replay shows the defender wins the ball first (just), hence why it flicks backwards thru his legs, and then O’hare’s leg is caught on his as he slides and he goes down after. Not a foul for me. Certainly not a ‘stonewall’ penalty.

we’ve had clearer pens not given than that one this season.
Game of opinions isn’t it?

I think O Hare had cut the ball back before impact

I couldn't believe O'Hare made so little of it at the time. But there was very little contact in reality, evidenced by O’Hare easily staying on his feet.

As I said, they had to play to the non whistle. O’Hare was certainly remonstrating with the referee when the next passage of play stopped.

Smallbone had O’Hare’s legs trapped / entangled in his own. I have seen penalties given for a lot less contact.. McFadzean’s for example.

The problem is, with penalty shouts these days, staying on your feet or not doesn't have a huge amount to do with the level of contact. He goes over last night, which many players would do with that kind of challenge, and it gets given.

I think you have to go down late after being fouled by your own teammates.

Interesting to see who gets this...
