Carl Baker hasn't been given a number. Looks like a midfielder & striker are still on the want list.

the worse thing is - if you add up the number of times i have seen people in that team play for us - it is not many at all
I was a season ticket holder for several years with half a dozen away games per season -

take out Thomas/Fleck and can count the other appearances on my fingers

Well we know now that Carl is going. We definately need 2 more strikers and maybe 1 more midfielder.

What! New signings haven't played for us before. Well we're relegated aren't we.

did i say that - was more pointing to the fact that i havent seen them play much - eg webster/seaboune etc
combination of the new signings together with the sixfields fiasco

Callum wilson - think i saw him play twice last season for us - absolute joke

In reference to your Wilson comment... Did you not try and go to away games.. fairly simple really.

Nor Stuart Urquhart, Thomas and Madison who were all given squad numbers during last season, and who I woul guess would take part of the squad this year. Isn't that a little strange?

8 and 16 (ie Baker and Barton) left vacant fairly deliberately. To not even give them a number is a real kick in the bollocks for them. 'All deals are off' means that he is still at the club. Are they that c*ntish to not even give him a number?!

At 1st I thought I was fairly buoyed by the fact that 8 and 9 were available meaning two attack minded goal machines were coming in, perhaps in the coming days. In reality, it's the former club captain being treated like shit and Tudgay's probably preference of the 20 shirt over 9 more than anything else!

I know a lot will disagree with me but I'm disgusted the way Baker is being treated. He gives a fuck about the club more than the rest of the players there put together.

I can't speak for him but not having seen the players play, not knowing what they look like, not knowing what they are like etc etc means you feel much more disconnected from the club, you care less weather they win or lose and this will seriously affect attendances when we come back to Coventry. I used to go to the ice hockey every week but once I stopped going for a while I haven't gone back. Not knowing the players at all is a big reason for that, if I go to a game now I simply won't enjoy it in the way I used too, of course it wouldn't take too many trips to get that back but it's a hurdle I simply haven't bothered to jump over and this will be the case for many City fans too, especially those who haven't followed the club closely while we are away.

Ask the average fan, season ticket holder (at the ricoh) but doesn't really travel away accept for the biggest games to name players from our squad now and I bet most of them can only name a few and yet they would have easily rattled off the names of 15+ players only a couple of years ago. I don't even know what most of our squad look like yet I could easily put names to pictures of players from 5,10,15+ years ago

Perhaps he's laying down the gauntlet for them to go out, put some performances in the U21's possibly or out on loan to earn a squad number?

1. We give Baker a number, a fan buys a shirt with his name and number on the back, then Baker leaves. Not going to look good is it when we 100% know he is leaving.
2. I don't get how he has been treated like shit. He was stripped off the captaincy because we have a player who is more captain material. He is also not in SP's plans. How is that being treated like shit? If he isn't good enough and on 4x the amount of an average L1 player then get rid.

Baker hasn't got a number under the assumption that he's going. If he doesn't go and plays, he'll then get a number and the intense drama concocted comes to an end.

If he's purposely frozen out it's a shitter, but not announcing a squad number for a player most likely on their way is barely news.

Remember when people were up in arms over the treatment of the bomb squad. We didn't need them did we...

If you don't need someone then that's fine but there's a right and a wrong way to go about moving people out of the club.

1. Why are we trying to oust him anyway? Why is he not in SP's plans? It's sure as hell not on ability. SP's record of signing players has been nothing short of diabolical to date but ill reserve judgement until the end of next season because this is his team now and he should be given the chance to show what he can do. It's been stated in the media all week that Baker is probably going to leave so a fan to get his name on the back would be pretty stupid (unless his name is baker..doubt that we will sell many anyway!). I find it funny that what he did in the 1st season we came down to league has been all but forgotten just because he didn't do it last year..People have short fucking memories.

2. No issue with the captaincy but he is being forced out IMO. Not good enough? Have a word with yourself we all know that isn't true and that he has more quality than anyone else in the current squad at present. Still capable for another 2 seasons at this level.

We didn't need Jordan bloody Clarke, somehow he wormed his way back in the useless tosser. I'd have kept Jennings and McDonald but no-one else. But they were treated badly tbh. Being made to train away from everyone else at a local rugby club must be pretty demoralising (especially when they know Jordan Clarke has been retained!)

1. It doesn't matter. If Baker was given a squad number I would be more inclined to say that he is staying rather than leaving. This pretty much confirms at present he will probably be leaving. If he was to stay he will get a number; whats the big deal?

2. If you saw him last year he was very inconsistent. Yes he had some good games but that happened every 3-4 games perhaps. Not to mention cutting inside every move, pulling out of 50/50s and waving his arms in the air every time he got tackled. You call that captain material?

If he was on 2k a week I would expect that more but on a wage which is Championship level I expect him to be one of the best players in the League and certainly good enough for mid-table Championship. In reality he is just an average L1 player and if Leyton orient/Barnsley/ whoever want to pay that sort of wage for him then good luck to them. A pivotal reason why we are in this leage is paying over the top wages for overrated players; I'm glad that's getting sorted.

But hey if you want him to stay and pay him 8k then that's your opinion. But don't moan if we don't get anyone else in because we cannot afford wages; that's four players we can get in for the selling of one.

I agree with your sentiment about Baker...I think it's a stupid decision not to keep him on but SP has made the decision. One thing about SPs ruthlessness that is to be commended...if you're not in his plans, you're REALLY not in his plans. Same with the bomb squad last year. Whilst it seemed harsh, it was the right decision. I guess with Baker, if he's not in his plans, why offer him a number?

Whilst Bakers certainly loyal and loves the club/fans, he was too inconsistent on the pitch. Not getting any younger either so it's a fair decision, if one I'm not 100% on.

The treatment of the bomb squad was a disgrace because the treatment of the bomb squad was a disgrace, weather we needed them or not was completely irrelevant to that, what we did pretty much negated the chance of any of our players acting with loyalty in the future because why the hell should they when the club treats other players like that.

11 loses from our last 20 games suggests its far from a fact we didn't need the bomb squad.

I honestly still think still offers us something and would be worth keeping but certainly on reduced terms if money is the issue. The £8k/wk banded about isn't viable certainly not in league 1.

People will point to the fact that we could get 4 people for the wages of 1 but we said that about murphy, Clarke, Moussa. It has been a 1 out 1 in process thus far in the close season and we are still very thin on the ground. Our starting 11 doesn't look to bad but one or two injuries will drop us right in the shit. I just hope SP has a bit more luck with signings this season because he had a mare in 13/14! If we hadn't had Clarke before Xmas I worry about where we'd be right now, probably League 2.

Ok. Baker is surplus to requirements so we don't give him a squad number. What's wrong with that exactly.

Look at the overall picture. It is hard to imagine Baker was told he was off at the end of last season as he's bought a house down here over the summer, if he was surplus to requirements would it not have been courteous to tell him before he did that?

He then turns up for pre-season and gets stripped of the captaincy, his response was "I still have a year contract and will honour that and give my all as always for the badge unless I'm told otherwise", doesn't sound like someone who's been told to find another club.

He's left off the pre-season tour due to 'injury' and the we start hearing rumours of clubs wanting to sign him, he's missing training but says he's not leaving. Surely you can see the club haven't covered themselves in glory here?

What's wrong with a bit of honesty. If we're looking to get rid as he's earning too much then say so, if it's because he's not in SPs plans for this season say so. To me if before we've announced a new captain SP had said it is likely Baker will be moving on as he's not in my plans that would be a much better way to handle things.

In all the discussion of Baker leaving, it also seems clear (if it wasn't already) that Barton is on his way...to be honest I half suspected he had left already as have not heard his name mentioned in ages. People who know him (including former manager Graham Westley) said he was more interested in being a hippie musician and just played football for money, because he was good enough to do so professionally. I wouldn't count on that much longer if I was him.

So our midfield now incldues Fleck, o'Brien, Coulibaly, Swanson and Thomas - we need a minimum of two more midfielders (one winger and one central player), and 2-3 more strikers. Now let us see if the promised reinvestment of the transfer fees received materialises (I know where my money is on this).

At least this should show we're still looking for our marquee striker. That's got to be a good thing. I assume number 8 is for the CM we bring in.

Very surprised to not see either Maddison or Thomas, unless he's waiting to pick which one will be striker number 4 like he said earlier.

Even so, 20 players and only 2/3 more planned. That's only as much as the smallest amount of players used last season (Walsall - 23) and 10 less than we used last season (33).

Squeaky bum time if we get a few injuries in the wrong place at the wrong time.
