Worst team in our history? Are you 130 years old?
The last time City were relegated from the third division it was due to the introduction of the new fourth division. Teams who finished in the bottom half of the old Third Divisions North and South were relegated to form the new division. The team of that season did not finish in the bottom four, someone on here will know the actual finishing position. That team spent only one season in the fourth tier, finishing runners up and gaining promotion at the first attempt. On that basis it is fair to say that even statistically, this team is likely to be the worst in the clubs football league history. They are certainly the worst team in my 50 years of watching this club.

Definitely going down with these players. Slade is not to blame, the die was cast both by SISU's shambolic mismanagement and Mowbray's dreadful summer recruitment. Slade should be retained, release the entire squad and recruit an entirely new squad in League 2. However the budget will no doubt be squeezed again and the quality will decline further albeit surely that is practically impossible as most of the current squad are non league players at best.

Yes it must be easy to recruit at Coventry

TM: "Hi mark I want these 6 players "
MV: "Yes no worries mate"

Fast forward 4 weeks

TM: "mark about those players "
MV: well the players you wanted don't want to come as we pay garbage wages however I have your 7th -12th choice players here , I know you wanted these as squad players but this is all we can afford "

Players are shit , team does shit whilst still playing decent football , manager leaves and Mark Venus and Tim fisher blame him.

Sums it up really

Il say one thing , we always tried to play good football under Mowbray , it has got far worse since he left

I didn't agree with the abuse Mowbray was getting on here and stick to the idea that at some stage this club have got to appoint a good manager and give him the time and the resources to achieve. I said when Mowbray went that some people would be asking for his successors head inside 12 months. I didn't think it would be less than 12 weeks. The football I watched at Chesterfield and today was shocking, awful stuff. I don't understand lumping it forward to two men who have no chance of winning the ball. However, you surely can't sack Slade and bring in someone else with a week of the transfer window to go and expect them to do any better. The omens don't look good for Slade both from a results and performance perspective. He surely has to be given until the end of the season now to see what he can do. The common factor in the relentless failure of CCFC managers is Sisu. They appoint them but more to the point it is they that create the environment for inevitable failure. I have never been less interested, excited or underwhelmed by a CCFC managerial appointment as I was by Slade's. That was not because it was him it was of the fact that it is Sisu who need to go. Until they do it won't matter who the manager is.
Slightly off the point but I was saying to my son on the way out from the game today that Fisher had answered one caller's question about why he should buy a season ticket for next year with the answer of " wait and see what the new manager does with new players in January". Based on what we have seen so far he would presumably now agree with that caller who said he would not be renewing next season.

Why do you defend the current situation. Were you entertained today. Did you enjoy your Saturday afternoon at the Ricoh
If today wasn't the worst, name the time and date that was lower in living memory.

Why should they? Most of them wont be here next season and I doubt they get paid any more for avoiding relegation.

That's the recurring problem at the club. Short term thinking for seasons now is what has brought our decline and it's happened under every manager pretty much so I'm not sure how you can blame the manager. The lack of long term direction comes from above and feeds down and this is where we are because of it.

No point getting rid of Slade now. May as well retain him until the end of the season and protect that £1M profit that Tim's so proud of from having to pay of the manager. We're playing league 2 football next season regardless.

Im sure slade will get us winning sooner or later. Just hope its not too late by then.

At some point thoigh his supporters will have to stop putting all his defeats down to summer recruitment.

Come on slade. Step up

You can't lump the football forward and expect results unless you can win a fair percentage of headers. Today we won 2 or 3 all afternoon but it was the only approach we had. Of course we will win a game or two before the end of the season but playing the tactics we did with the personnel we have it isn't going to produce enough good results to keep us up

That was the first game I've seen with slade in charge and if that's what we've got for the rest of the season then we are without a doubt, doomed. I couldn't work out what our formation was most of the time and the mindless long ball stuff was disgraceful, really amateur stuff. Why have 4 centre halves on the pitch at once? Why keep hoofing it long when there's no one up with a chance of winning it? So many questions...

I'm sure I've seen worse but I can't remember when.

Agreed but our naive element of fans dont understand football. They think big man upfront, hardman in midfield is sure fire way to win. Look how they lauded slades signings before they even played.

It can work of course! but its not that black and white

We are going into league 2 possibly and it looks like we will now play that poor style of football too.

We might have to get used to it. Hiring slade may be ccfc officially downtooling

I'd agree with the majority on here that the last throw of the dice is goalscorers being signed during the rest of the window. It doesn't seem likely we'll stay up with just the current personnel.

Slade's record this season, with Charlton and us, is now played 21, points 22. There's no way a points-per-game ratio like that will keep us up from here. He's had his "first few weeks to get his feet under the table", we need to him to deliver now.

I wouldn't support us binning him before the end of the season in any event, but certainly we'll have a clear idea whether he should be offered a contract extension or not. Sacking managers hasn't brought long term success, now it doesn't seem to bring short-term success either.

he made the sub at ht, next not until 82nd min. He set up for a draw and it backfired. he got it completely wrong today in many areas. Hope he learns from his mistakes otherwise hello L2

The only defence for slade is that he must think I need to make a sub and then look around and think my god which one of those would you bring on.

question is how many games should we give a new manager? if he loses next game or 2 surely he cant be defended any what way and players should get alot of stick aswell!

It's with sadness that I have to agree. I always think that supporters need to give a manager a chance but after having witnessed the last 2 games and given Slade time to implement his 'style' of play.

He really will drag us down, players are playing scared. We are playing dark ages football and he show nothing to suggest it'll get any better.

Only have to look at when he uses his substitutes -doesn't use them to change the game-only as emergency. No tactical nous at all.

Fuckin fuming

Were playing dark ages football which was what most on here called for. 'Give it long', 'big in the tackle' etc... careful what you wish for

Yes the players were poor but how many of them were played out of position? Willis certainly, rose and jones second half. Coupled to that we had wing backs but never got them into the game as we hoofed the ball up to possibly (first half) the two smallest players on the pitch. The two young midfielders were lost, bypassed and ineffective. We never really looked like scoring and the only chance we had was Reilly's header. Not good enough when at home and when trying to avoid relegation.
The defence was ok but it only needed one slip (literally) for the game to be lost. On the corners we concentrated too much on pushing those trying to block burge and I felt we lost a bit of concentration as a result.

The formation today was baffling. Didn't give me confidence in the manager going forward. It was a shame because when Stevenson did get on the ball he did ok, and when he broke up play he looked decent. Most of the game was spent with the ball above his head though.

For the next game at Northampton (don't care about the EFL Trophy, I would trade a defeat at Swansea for 3 points on Saturday 100 times out of 100), I think RS needs to remember that wing backs do not seem to work, for anyone.

Time to get back to a flat back 4. Hopefully Stokes will be fit enough to at least start, even if he does get hauled off after 65 mins; we need him. Time to accept that Turnbull and maybe Willis aren't first choice CB now. I'd be tempted to go with Rawson, Clarke and Foley at RB (with either Willis or Harries as a replacement in case Rawson finds the going tough or Foley struggles to complete the 90 mins.

Time to give Jones a good go too. Why keep him out of the fray longer? Stick him on the right of midfield. Reid back to full fitness so automatic starter on the left, with a licence to drift inside. Stevenson and Rose in the middle. It's not clear what Rose's best role is but I'd like to see him partner Stevenson, with Reilly also on the bench so we can make a swap either directly for Rose or indeed for Jones if we want to try Rose on the right flank. Separately, I also wonder whether Rose might turn out to be our best option at right back (he could even switch roles with Foley who has been known to play a holding midfield role).

We seem to have little choice up front - Beavon if he's fit, probably with Tudgay who at least has scored 100 career goals and has some know-how, even if he is a bit of has-been. As I said in another thread, if Kwame Thomas is fit then throw him on off the bench.
So:
Burge

Stokes
Clarke
Rawson
Foley

Reid
Rose
Stevenson
Jones

Tudgay
Beavon

Subs: RCC, Haynes, Harries/Willis, Bigi, Reilly, Lameiras, Kwame

Although, frankly, unless we get some new signings in, if that's the best team we can put out, we are probably doomed. Alan McCorkmack in the middle with Rose at RB and Foley at CB with Clarke would be an interesting look, here's dreaming....

That is the formation I would go for and that side apart from Tudgay who may have scored nearly a hundred goals but it's probably taken him fifteen seasons. Would hope for a new striker

I like your general thinking, but Jones and Reid don't have enough end product. Those two on the wings is the equivilent of playing snooker with a rope.
