Wegerle was before Jones?

The subs were deffo JCH, Ponticelli and Reid as they came on. O'Brien must be the sub keeper, Maguire-Drew was that year and I think McDonald was the sub cb. Not sure on the other or the games played
I think it’s even earlier than Wegerle.

France ‘98 was clearly the height of our global reach, Moldovan scored vs England, Jarni scored for Croatia before joining us for a couple of days in the summer and Hadji (and Chippo) were on the scoresheet and would be SkyBlue within a year.

My post - Mustapha Hadji scored at a WC finals? was me suggesting he had ( I hadn't looked back through the thread to see someone had already posted it!) I should have said 'didn't he?' at the end. Note to self - must try harder when posting.

Some great shouts here, even some of the wrong answers were inspired guesses.

So, let's do some answers.

Q1. Name 5 players who have played for City and scored at a FIFA World Cup finals

On my list were Robbie Keane (RoI 2002), Haji Wright (USA 2022), Mustapha Hadji (Morocco 1998), Jordan Henderson (England 2022), and Joe Cole (England 2006).

I'd missed Gordon Strachan (Scotland 1986) - Martw take a bow son. Also, shamefully, I missed off the architect of The St Valentine's Day Massacre himself- Virorel Moldovan (Romania 1998). Jimmyhillsbeard with the knowledge there, including that he was the only one on the list to still be a City player at the time. And I was sure this was wrong, but more fool me cos Rob9872 was bang on the money with another scourge of the Villans, John Aloisi ('Straya 2006).

Now to the asterisks- the question did specify 'played for City', but both Daniel Sturridge (England 2014) and Robert Jarni (Croatia 1998) were on our books without making an appearance. And Youssef Chippo did indeed score an OG in 1998.

Q2. Name the cup semi finals City competed in during the 1980s

1980-81 League Cup- lost 4-3 on aggregate to West Ham

1986/87 FA Cup- won 3-2 vs Dirty Leeds

1987-88 Simod Cup 1-1 v Reading, lost on 4-3 on penalties FFS

Skybluelee the first with all 3 correct. Hardlines Shannerz- I'd also pencilled in the Forest league cup semi, but Skybluelee was correct, it was 89/90 season so the semi took place in 1990. Pearce's free kick should never have been allowed btw.

Q3. We all know we're the Sky Blues, a lot of us know we used to be The Bantams, but what were we before that?

Honourable mentions for Shannerz and Fergusonsbeard here. It was indeed Blackbirds, or Little Blackbirds. Singers was not a nickname, but the original name of the club, formed by Bicycle workers at the Singer cycle factory.

Q4. Clarrie Bourton is famously our record goalscorer- who is the 2nd highest?

I don't think anyone got this- Kevin Dri Billy Lake. 123 league goals between 1928-1939:

Tidying up a couple of names mentioned- Ray Straw is 4th with 85 (1957-61), and Jock Lauderdale (like Lake & Bourton, one of the 'Old 5' heroes) got 63 (1931-37).

Sheffers & Dion the best of the modern era btw, with 72 apiece.

Q5. Name the first USA international to play for City?

Now I have a nagging feeling this may be one I get pulled up on, but AFAIK, Oakey is spot on with Gerry Baker- born in the USA but raised in Scotland. 7 caps between 1968-69.

David O'Day didn't have the name but he did know the back story. International qualification rules were much tighter then, and Gerry's brother Joe, despite being raised and identifying as a staunch Scotsman, was compelled to play for England as he was born South of the border (he only lived in England for 6 weeks before moving North).

Q7. City have played in all 4 tiers of English football- what are our highest league positions in each tier?

4th Tier- 2nd (the inaugural season of the old Division 4, 1958-59).

3rd Tier- 1st on 3 occasions (The Old 5 won Div 3 (South) in 1935-36, Jimmy's Sky Blues won The 3rd Division in 1963-64, and Mark Robins' Covid Champions were the unanimous choice in the curtailed 2019/20 League One campaign).

2nd Tier- 1st in 1966-67 (That man Hill and his Sky Blue Revolution again).

1st Tier- 6th 1969-70 (Noel Cantwell leading the Sky Blues into Europe in the old 1st Division).

Cigars go to Legia Sky Blue and Shannerz.

Q8. What's the missing word? 'Southern Professional _____ Cup Holders, you'll never sing that...'

Skybluelee isn't messing about- it was indeed 'floodlit'.

We beat West Ham 2-1 in the 1959/60 final, and no one has fancied their chances at taking the trophy from us since.

Q9. Name the teams City have played in FA Cup Quarter Finals.

1910 Everton, 1963 Man U, 1973 Wolves, 1982 West Brom, 1987 Sheff Wed, 1998 Sheff Utd, 2006 Chelsea, 2024 Wolves

A team effort, pretty much all of the above were mentioned by someone. Legia was correct in that the 1910 game was when we were still a Southern League club- I'm sure I've read that the income from that cup run helped to cement the club as a going concern, pay for new stands etc.?

Q10. Name the subs from the L2 play off final v Exeter. For fans of squad depth, a bonus point for how many times that seven played for City in the league during their careers.

O'Brien , Thompson, McDonald, MacGuire-Drew, Reid, Clarke-Harris, Ponticelli. David O'Day 100% on who came on as well- JCH, Ponts and Reid. That's 2 Jordan's and a Jordon, plus Shippers and Willis in the starting XI.

Combined CCFC league appearances for that bench: 11, 6, 37, 3, 41, 44, 24 = 166 (an average of 24). For contrast, the bench for 2nd leg v Sunderland last year averaged 78 appearances for City per player. We've come a long way.

Great effort by Legia once again to get so close to the appearances figure.

Thanks a lot everyone who had a guess, hopefully that helped pass the time til we smash Norwich next week!
