Thinking of youth players who broke into the first team and we all thought might be the next big thing.

I'll start the ball rolling:

Kevin Thornton

When he broke into the team under Coleman I expected him to go far in the game (I understand the reasons why he didn't but he had so much talent and potential as a youngster).

Other starlets who didn't make it after looking like they had a big future after a few first team appearances?

Kevin Thornton is a prime example of having “potential” far more potential than Bayliss as he broke into the team at a higher level went on to do nothing in the game last time I seen him he was working in a shop in cov town centre.

Don't want to disagree with Bertola and certainly not with Greggs and his owl....but I don't recall Gavin Strachan or Ducros being labelled as names who could make it really big?

Bigi was someone who acquired a big reputation very quickly - but I never understood the hype there.

Dougie Mcguire, signed from scotland as a youngster and sillett raved about him. Came onto the pitch once for 2 minutes and didn't touch the ball. never heard of him again.

Tommy English freaked me out as a youngster. Coming from the Bedworth 'side of the woods' blokes didn't dye their hair. It was unheard of. Tommy English turned up to a new season with a bleach job - didn't understand who it even was on the pitch for some minutes.

He was legit supposed to be the next big thing wasn’t he. Same squad as Sam Shilton

I’m going to put one out there - Chris Kirkland - injuries stopped him playing for a top 4 team and England. IMO he was better than Paul Robinson.

Should have been a superstar, had a good career but could have had a great one

Arguably McSheffrey. He did made a decent career for himself but I think many thought when he left for Birmingham thatd he'd kick on to bigger things.

Can recall a few from the last few years who supposedly had potential, Jeffers, Cooney, seem to recall a winger who may or may not have been called Davis?

How many of the young players that didn’t make it in the past when we were in the top league would have been starters in this team?

I remember Liam Davis scoring a worldie in Richard Shaw's testimonial vs Celtic and thinking he could be incredible. Oh dear.

My one: Stuart Giddings. Played more England youth internationals than he did for Cov.

Callum Davenport - Looked like a Rolls Royce of a defender 8 England u21 caps but only turned our 28 times for Tottenham and West Ham with a few loan spells. Played 84 times for us before leaving as a 21 year old.

Ducros was my year at CCFC through the age groups. Was technically outstanding and went off to the old National School of excellence at Lilleshall for U15/16 (like St George's park, for you youngsters!) He could have gone pretty much anywhere but signed a YTS at City. There were a few local lads who had the choice of big clubs like Manchester United but at this period in time City's youth set up had a great reputation. Age groups were often mixed together and I was in groups containing Iyesden Christie (now Sphinx! at about 44) Marcus Hall and a lad called Simon Wood (massive massive Hope's for him... was big as a kid but others caught up) Think he played a few games for Mansfield in the end.
Ducros made it into the first team at 18 and was invited to train with the full England squad when a YT at City but then drifted away... size was a factor with him though. Would have been better suited to today's game.
I ended up at Chesterfield. Kevin Davies year below me, but was playing in 1st team. Sean Dyche a big character at Chesterfield at that time!

I remember there being quite a lot of talk about Ashley Cain when he was in our youth setup. Another one that never made it, but didn't he appear on some reality TV show?

An obvious one-Conor Thomas. The new Stevie G apparently. Highlight of his “career” scoring a couple of penalties for Cheltenham.

Oh good one. It was weird how we sent him on trial to Liverpool.

Giddings. A Champ Manager legend, but a real life damp squib.

Craig Faulconbridge.

Sam Shilton. Edit: checked on Wiki and he came to us young, but not from our youth team.
