Sisu boss Joy Seppala turned down a deal which could have brought the Sky Blues back to the Ricoh – rent-free for the rest of the season.
The offer was made by council leader Ann Lucas during talks with Sisu boss Seppala.
It is understood the proposal could have seen the Sky Blues play rent free until the end of this season – and £100,000 for each of the next two seasons if they remained in Division One.
But Coventry City turned down the offer floated during talks last month.
The club complains the proposal failed to offer the loss-making club any vital stadium revenues, and would still have seen them paying other matchday costs totalling £320,000 a year.
The plan was presented as an alternative to Sisu/Otium playing Coventry City’s ‘home’ matches at Northampton for three to five years, while building a new stadium in Warwickshire.
It is understood the club pays above £150,000 a year to play at Northampton’s Sixfields ground, where attendances of less than 2,000 compare with last season’s 10,000 Ricoh gates, adding to the club’s financial losses.
The latest rent proposal was revealed in a Guardian newspaper report.
In the summer ACL had made a rent offer of £400,000 via administrator Paul Appleton, down from the £1.3million rent the club had partly stopped paying, complaining it was extortionate.

Mark Labovitch, Otium’s non-executive director, said: “We clearly understood from Ann’s statement on October 30 that she was prepared to discuss ownership. We were surprised when that turned out not to be the case.
“We were equally surprised at the way ACL directors, the council executives Martin Reeves and Chris West, did not communicate this change of heart to us in a direct and straightforward way, but did so instead with off-record whispers on a fans’ podcast, the Nii Lamptey show.
“We have made it clear that no club can have a viable financial future unless it owns its own stadium.
“There is no prospect of us returning to the former landlord/tenant relationship with ACL, a company which bled the club dry for many years over two generations of owners, and wilfully sought to damage the club with actions which led to needless points deductions over the last two seasons.
“Such inexplicable actions have severely damaged our promotion chances. It is a credit to Steven Pressley and the players that so much of the damage caused by ACL has been made good.

“Joy’s door is open to Ann for further discussions. But we would have to be clear this time that it would be a discussion about stadium ownership.”
“In the absence of a clear commitment to discuss ownership, we are pressing ahead with the plans for our new stadium on the outskirts of Coventry.”

Turning down a rent free offer could also "severely damage our promotion chances". If SISU for once would accept some of the blame for this mess and stop all the spin we might get somewhere.

It's my ball and that means you can't play. Sick to the back teeth of all the bollocks, you can't accuse the council of not trying, Joy just thinks its all about her and her rules. I sell for a living and the only way you agree a sale is for you both to get to a mutually agreeable point. The woman is Fucking deluded.

And those plans are ?

Even if they exist if (and still an IF) it's a 3 year offer, no strings... and forget whether there are any strings for a moment, Labovitch's justifications are rather bizarre!

If plan A really is building your own stadium then (as said elsewhere) is there a problem with playing in another stadium temporarily, in a place which builds you goodwill and probably helps you carry as many as possible over to a new stadium?!? Surely it has the added advantage of stopping ACL moving on, and stopping them being a rival to any new stadium as well...

The only rational reason I can come up with is hardball negotiating already pulls down offers time and time again, so they may as well keep going... say what you will, they've been pretty effective in changing the rules of discussion time and time again.

Or that they're still doing NOPM to ACL, which come to think of it is a concept they came up with, we just copied them - which if you think that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery means most of the supporters are flattering SISU

The only way to force them back to the ricoh( the offer is there) is a total boycott, all you fans going to sixfields have it in your power to make them return, do something about it.

So half a season rent free plus 2 seasons at £100,000 plus costs and circa 10,000 attendances or 3 seasons at Northampton (cost 130,000?) + costs and circa 2,000 attendances. Forgive me for not being a financial hot shot but how on anything other than planet Sisu does taking the offer while they build their own stadium not make sense?

Unless it is nothing to do with income and they don't plan to build their own stadium...

Why would that make a difference? There was a 45 year deal in place before and they got round that

Up until now, offers have not been what they've claimed to be, when filtered through a PR company for public release.

That's why some of us are treading warily, and thinking about possible catches and get-outs, before jumping...

It doesn't mean we want there to be any possible catches either, indeed it probabl;y tallies with Ann Lucas's far more savvy approach to dealing with this whole mess if there aren't... but that doesn't stop it being wise to tread carefully, based on past filters.

In that respect, it's no different to automatically swallowing a SISU 'it's all about the freehold' line. proceed with caution, avoid getting burned, and other such cliches.

What are you talking about? An offer was made and it was rejected out of hand. Now defend Shitzu on that!

Still I've missed your repartee. Who's defending them?

Caution about PR filters doesn't autmoatically mean pro SISU, Shitzu, or other bellyachingly amusing names for them.

Personally I don't go sixfields but where in the evidence that the club would return if there is a total boycott, SISU have already shown they don't care about losing 8 thousand fans so why would losing 2 thousand more. They have their eyes fixed on ownership of the Ricoh and won't budge

We had a very attractive two women come into the shop on the weekend from the local hairdressing place offering a half price hair styling to employees of local businesses. Sadly when I asked to take them up on this it turned out that you had to be a woman and it wasn't them doing the styling it was the trainee Dawn cos she needs the practice

Well that was a quick reply. For someone who is " non executive" ML seems very capable of making definitive statements as to what they will or wont do, seems to make a lot of the meetings, if he isn't a decision maker in some way why is he there?

Anyone care to explain what makes him "non executive" because company house just lists him as a director with the same duties and liabilities as any other Otium director.

The meeting with AL was 30th October, the pod cast show was what last week or week before? Surely AL made it pretty clear what was on the table at her meeting, (in fact the statement from ML says she did) West & Reeves didn't have to. Not to mention the podcast was the interpretation of what was said by the interviewers/presenters (that's not saying they were wrong or made it up but we all know things get lost in translation)

Match day fees are a misnomer. Every club pays them either directly or their landlord. There is no way any serious commercial entity would not charge these costs but equally no way that any reasonable entity would not expect a reasonable charge. Bigger crowds will bring bigger costs, use of undersoil heating costs etc etc, those costs are not rent at any stadium not just the Ricoh

So the choice for the next 2/3rds of a season appears to be £2m+ ticket sales, improved shop sales because team in Coventry, the ability to buy in other incomes and sell on, potential for greater corporate income even sponsorship less match costs £200k for rest of season..... or to stay at Sixfields total incomes (including share of F&B etc) approx £1m reduced reduced shop sales, a small share of other incomes etc less rent £150k+

What I would like to see is the directors and owner explain, without emotion or blaming others, why the pure business case at Sixfields stacks up compared with what is possible at the Ricoh. Not statements of we are not doing it because we dont trust you (feeling is mutual I think) or we will only talk ownership.

A novel approach might be to actually make a bid for ACL and the freehold ..... it wont happen I suspect

Now I dont want this to happen, but from a business point of view we must be getting perilously close to ACL saying "thats it thats enough we draw a line under it and do something different with the stadium bowl "with the CCC supporting that decision. No it cant happen overnight but we should remember this hasn't just happened there has been time to make other plans. I don't think the freehold is for sale at a value that would interest both parties...................... To say to SISU "go build the new stadium" then might be close.

unless sisu have some game changing trick up their sleeves, i dont think the JR is it, ......................and if it were so game changing why havent they used it?

If the JR goes against CCC ACL will be finished how much more of Coventry's tax payers money is gonna go on bailing out that stadium

So many words, views and complications but it's simple SISU, the hedge fund scumbags from out of town want it all, the stadium, the sponsorship revenue all F & B revenue and anything else they can get on the cheap by distressing the current owners/management. It's basically been their strategy for 2/3 years and I wouldn't be surprised if part of the plan was seeing us relegated at least once. Maybe they'll shoot Pressley soon as he is buggering up their plans with his success in rallying a small squad, especially if they could do with another drop to encourage ACL/CCC etc to sell in the summer. Yes a little tongue in cheek but not far off the mark !!??

Again opinion presented as fact.

Its just as likely that acl will get a commercial loan.

Presumably you would like to see it given away in order to avoid*loss to the taxpayer? How ironic.

If the council offers the club land within the city boundaries and says 'go on, build it' is this necessarily a bad thing, though?

It brings its own denouement after all, either a stadium arises (club in Coventry doesn't have to be welded to Ricoh, it wasn't for plenty of years after all) or it becomes abundantly clear no stadium ever will arise, the club ain't coming back... and the periodic threads on a new club gain more currency, and a new club has more chance of success.

Unlikely. Arena is more profitable than it was when they relied on CCFC rent.
Are you saying give SISU the Arena for nothing to save a a few thousand pounds ?
