Shaun Miller is determined to make up for lost time after admitting he has “wasted” the last five months.
Miller is set to make his full Crawley debut at Bristol City this weekend having joined on a month’s loan from Coventry City on deadline day two weeks ago.
The striker has endured a miserable time at the Ricoh Arena where he has started just one game all season following his move from Sheffield United in the summer.
Reds boss John Gregory tried to sign the 27-year-old when he was released by the Blades and Miller admits he made the wrong choice joining the Sky Blues.
Miller said: “I was close to joining in the summer. I had some good chats with the manager and my agent was in contact with the club for a few weeks.
“The biggest issue was that Crawley was three and a half hours away from where I live and I’d just had a new baby and was in the process of moving house.
“I had other clubs interested a lot closer to home so it purely came down to that in the end. I regret it now because I have wasted five months in some respects.
“Wherever you go there are never any guarantees so you’ve got to take it on the chin but it has been massively frustrating.
“I’ve not really been given a chance. I’ve started one game and came off after an hour and that’s it.
“After a while you get the impression you are not going to play much and as I only have a one-year contract I need to look elsewhere.
“I don’t know if I’ve got a future at Coventry. They have got quite a few strikers on loan who are due to go back in January so you never know what is going to happen.
“I’m just looking forward to getting some games under my belt for Crawley and hopefully scoring a few goals.
“I’m not looking too far ahead at the moment but if I get a run of games and do well hopefully there will be an option to do something either here or somewhere else.”
Miller came on in the closing stages of the 1-1 draw at home to Chesterfield 13 days ago but is likely to make his first start since October at Ashton Gate with top scorer Izale McLeod serving a one-match ban.
The former Crewe frontman boasts a modest career strike rate of 57 goals in 235 games but highlighted his eye for goal when he bagged a first-half hat-trick in the Sussex Senior Cup victory over Eastbourne United last week
Miller is confident he can emulate those predatory instincts for Crawley in League One as he looks to be the ‘fox in the box’ Crawley have been missing since the departure of Matt Tubbs nearly three years ago.
Miller added: “I am a goalscorer and a finisher. A lot of my goals come in the box. I am very focused on getting in and around the goal.
“I scored 19 in a season at Crewe one year and then when I got in the team at Sheffield United I scored eight in my last ten starts before I did my cruciate.
“I scored three in five at Shrewsbury so I know that when I get a run in the team that I do tend to get goals.
“I am more than confident that if I am play regularly I can score a minimum of 15 goals a season.”
I don't see why he hasn't been given more opportunities here ...... its not like our strikers that do play are scoring many
