The plus point for me is it looks like MR knows we need another forward and goal scorer if we are to progress further. Wether it’s Shankland or someone else. I’ll remind people turn the clock back 2 years to what Tammy Abrahams goals brought an average Aston Villa side, the Premier League.

I don’t know how many times I need to tell you this but Abraham was on 50k per week...

When they paid £1m loan fee and £50k a week in wages?

We're not going to be in a promotion battle.

So youre saying we are as good as that Villa side that got promoted, if we get a Tammy Abraham-esque striker in?

It could be the scout was actually watching another player.

Not seen a great deal of him admittedly but what I have he reminds me of a more experienced, better Ponticelli. Will get goals but arguably not great at everything else and as we play one up front would MR trust him to do all that? I reckon he'd have more faith in baka to do stuff like pressing.

Plus MR never really seemed to rate Ponti so it's unlikely someone of a similar ilk is likely to rate too highly either. Certainly not at the likely cost.

He's got a point, Shankland is solely a goal scorer and offers very little in the way of work rate or in the build up. This is much liek Pointicelli.

In our system it's unlikely a player like that would work.

How do you know ? For all we know he could be a good link up player looks in the similar mould to Godden & Walker to me...

I still don’t see anything in this

I watch Scottish football and have seen him play, who many of his games have you watched that aren't 30 second highlights on youtube?

I don't think there's much chance of us signing him now, but who knows there could be a chance in January or next summer if we lose a striker or get some cash in.

Nothing wrong with carrying out some due diligence.

I was comparing the playing style. I specifically said he was a better, more experienced version.

Ok fair enough I’ve only seen highlights on you tube scores well but I ask myself how many wild Godden or walker score At that level I think they would be doing the same figures if not more

I've seen him 8 or 9 times for Dundee United and Ayr.

He's now played about 20 SPL games and scored one goal, he's played at this level and failed before.

To be fair most of those SPL games were when he was 19/20. The following seasons he went out on loan to the Championship, although you could argue if they were sending him out on loan they clearly didn't think he was capable of that level even at 22.

This is his first season back playing SPL in five years and he's currently 1 in 3.

He was kept out the side at Aberdeen by a striker who went on to sign for Salford City.

He's good at being a finisher but he's lacking as a footballer. He's also 25 and so far Rangers and Celtic haven't really need interested in him.

Looking at our overall policy of buying inexpensive to develop and then sell on at hopefully a much higher value, I am somewhat hesitant with Shankland as Scottish strikers do not tend to fare so well in England. Ross McCormack being maybe the main exception, when he went to Aston Villa for £12million.

Celtic/Rangers may not have been interested because he was playing SLC. They tend to prefer to sign the strikers from rivals in the SPL just to fuck them over and make them less competitive against them.

You do have to ask the question if he’s so good why Haven’t one of the 2 big clubs snapped him up ?

Celtic have picked up a few lower league players as well. I'm a Celtic fan. The last SPL striker I can remember us signing was Nadir Ciftci back in 2015.

I think there's a culmination of reasons. He's only ever performed at Scottish Championship level which is probably comparable to a mix of League Two/National League. Given his lack of experience at a reputable level the price tag on his head is likely to be completely inflated - especially considering reports north of the border suggest that his goalscoring record actually masks a complete lack of footballing ability. Also, if you look at the quality of players Celtic and Rangers have brought in, in recent years, it's either the cream of the crop from the SPL, they've dipped into the European market for exciting talent, or occasionally manage to attract young prospects from the EFL/Premier League. They're fishing in far bigger ponds than the Scottish Championship and are likely only to invest such large sums in players lower down in Scotland's footballing pyramid if they're a real prospect. Shankland is 25, 26 in August. Hardly much room for development at his age.

Also, with regards to EFL clubs choosing not to take a punt on him, it's likely to be similar to why Celtic and Rangers haven't. Except I think you can add that there's now a stigma attached to Scottish strikers after so many have failed to adapt to the English game following 'big money' transfers.

We had a scout up at Ayr to watch Shankland couple of years ago. Came home with Rose.

There'll be plenty of players they're watching

Just Google Coventry city news now and it will give you numerous links to us having a scout at their recent game (P.S. can't believe we're looking at him for now)

I'm no expert on Scottish football... But to the one's that are... What are the differences in ability between Shankland & the £2m signing Dykes... Who Barnsley went big for but got done by QPR.
