Rushworth (53 Viewers)

He’s a good keeper but looks not right mentally this season. Hes let in some right slow fluffy goals. Just needs some confidence and belief.
He looked incredibly nervous in the tunnel before the Arsenal game and he still seems feeling it. He's definitely got the ability, just needs someone to help sort his head out a bit.

Wonder if Dr. Claire wouldn't mind coming back for a bit to work on him.

We have no choice but to back him. But cant believe we spunked £25m on him whilst keepers like Martinez were going for less than £10m. Granted, he was never gonna come here, and hes injured now, but its perspective. He was a signing for the fans, and as it stands, its backfiring spectacularly.

I had more chance of marrying Margot Robbie than we had of signing Emi Martinez

He’s a keeper who has never played above the Championship who is now playing the Prem. It’s a massive step up in level, he might just not be good enough for it, or maybe he will be further down the line. It’s early to say but he’s had a bad start to the season. Struggling to really remember any quality saves he’s made so far.
Yeah but the issue is basic shot stopping at the moment - that’s not changing with the level

£7.5m fee and £200k a week for 12 months is still less than the £25m fee paid for Rushworth. And thats not taling Rushworths wages in to account. In fact, even without Rushworhs wages, is still £7m cheaper. Just saying!

Great, you seem to forget the player has to want to sign for us.

Actually good at that vs Championship level players. Not so good, it seems, vs PL level ones.

That isn't what is happening is it though, he's at the moment letting in soft goals, if he was being beaten by great "PL level" shots that would be ok.

It's dead money though, not that Martinez has covered himself in glory this season anyway

Don’t know what’s going on with him. He’s gone full Brad Collins at the minute. Have to hope he comes good sooner rather than later.

I know we've been here before and written him off after only a handful of games, but fuck me, he looks so out of his depth. Not alone, but should have stopped goals 2 and 3 tonight. Granted, they should have been cut out before being needing a save, but both very poor!

Fans overly inflated his ego, and in doing so overly inflated his price. And Brighton knew it. They had no intention at all to play him this season, they just wanted the best they could for him. To think, we blew 1/4 of our summer budget on an unknown quantity. And everyone was so adamant we'd easily make a profit on that £25m should we go down. As it stands, we'll be lucky if we lose.less than half that on resale.

I am not sure anything was over inflated. He was genuinely superb last season and unlike outfield players that quality should have been transferable directly to the premier league. Not quite sure what is going on

Been a crap start to the season, no dressing it up. Needs to sort himself the fuck out as teams like us will be needing the keeper to win us points occasionally to have any hope.

Like I said, he was never gonna come.herr, just pointing out what £7.5m buys you in goal. And we spunked £25m on an unknown quantity. Im not saying we would ever of signed Martinez, nor he would've come to us, but using him as an example.of the sort of quality you CAN get for a fraction of what we paid. I dont get what you dont get about that! Its an example, not a pledge that we are going to sign him. You do know what the word EXAMPLE means right? Im sure you do, so see that im using Martinez and £7.5m as an example.

Covered himself in glory? He got clattered and subsequently had to have an operation. Wouldn't say hes had a stinker of a season. One of the best in the PL (when fit).

He looks frightened and this league will give him very little space to gain confidence.
It's a concern.

that's great but what is your point of a player with a1 off set of circumstances doesn't want to join us.

What other PL class keepers could you get for 7.5m? You may have point if there are others available at that price level.

It is an example, however it is slightly irrelevant as Martinez has wanted to leave for years and Villa needed to balance the books so he was always going to go cheaper.
Rushworth was an UK quantity in the prem but was very well known quantity to us as a club. The Hull keeper (mentioned earlier by someone) has had a good start but was a complete UK. We would be losing it if we signed him and he made those mistakes that Rushworth is currently making, whereas Rushworth has more credit in the bank as we know what he can provide

He’s made 2 mistakes tonight but he’ll learn and be fine.

Can we lay off Carl? No keeper would have saved the first 2 tonight and - yes - the 3rd was an error. BUT he didn't lose us the game tonight nor the Brighton fiasco. He's as decent as keeper as I've seen so far and when people talk about worldie saves from the opposition keepers why don't we ask the question why our PL forwards give them the chance to save from 6yrds. Good Grief!

Which is exactly why we needed experience in there i felt. I loved Rushy last season. I just really didnt think he was the man we needed at this point in his career and our time. Especially not at £25m. I dont know who the answer was, but it really had to be an older, experienced head. A proven stalwart. Even if that meant splashing a little extra on the wages. Even a Fraser Forster type. Not the best in the league, but a steady head and a steady pair of hands. Like when we loaned Stockdale from Blues. Wasn't a spectacular or amazing keeper. Just did a job. Tonnes of experience in a very inexperienced team and a calm head. Thats what we needed in nets this season.

He wasn't an unknown quanity though was he, he had had an absolutely outstanding season and helped us win vital points. He has the talent and reflexes, but something at the moment just isn't quite right with him. Hasn't been looking solid in any game really so far.

The whole world is watching him now, that's what people forget, make a mistake in the championship and very few people see it in comparison to tonight's game. Perhaps needs a bit of coaching with the mind at this level

Again, just EXAMPLES, and you'll no doubt find fault, but EXAMPLES.

Meslier went to Arsenal on a free to sit on their bench.

Peretz who has Bundesliga and Intl experience and was a quality keeper back end of last season went to Southampton for £6m. Played at a higher level than Rushworth amd only a fraction of the cost.

Fraser Forster free agent to Bournmouth. Even if not as No1, as an experienced Stalwart. And you cant tell me he'd be a worse signing at No2 than paying £4m for Bently?

Statistically the worst keeper in the league.

Rushworth has earned the right to learn the premier league on the job with us by playing a massive part in getting us promoted. He wouldn't get the time to make these mistakes at Brighton or another prem team which im sure is a reason why he chose us. He started last season with a few soft goals and came good, I have no doubt he will win us plenty of points this season too.

He is easily one of the best goalkeepers we have had for a generation, some of his saves are genuinely breathtaking, and given his age will get better too. Tough night tonight for him, nothing more nothing less.
